Taxonomy & naming
Perrunichthys perruno was described by the American ichthyologist Leonard Peter Schultz in 1944. It is the only recognized species in the genus Perrunichthys, which is placed within the family Pimelodidae — the long-whiskered or flat-headed catfishes of South America. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, California Academy of Sciences) treats Perrunichthys perruno as the valid combination, and no synonyms are currently in wide use.
Pimelodidae is a large and taxonomically active family within the order Siluriformes. The family has undergone significant revision as molecular phylogenetics has reshaped the boundaries of South American catfish families; Perrunichthys has remained within the pimelodid core throughout these revisions. The genus name is derived from the specific epithet, which itself follows the common vernacular used for the fish in parts of Venezuela and Colombia — "perruno" translates loosely as "dog-like" or "of the dog" in Spanish, likely alluding to some feature of the fish's appearance or behaviour noticed by local fishers. Data on the exact type locality and type specimens are sparse in the accessible literature.
Morphology
Perrunichthys perruno has the characteristic pimelodid form: a broad, depressed head, a long, tapering body, and three pairs of prominent barbels — one long maxillary pair that may extend past the dorsal fin, and two shorter mandibular pairs. The overall body shape reflects a powerful, active predator built for pursuing fish in flowing river systems.
Adults are reported to reach upward of 23.5 in total length, and the genus pattern suggests that larger individuals may exist. The skin is entirely scaleless — naked and smooth — a trait shared throughout Pimelodidae that has important consequences for medication sensitivity (see "In the aquarium"). The dorsal and pectoral fins each bear a stiff, serrated spine that can be locked in the erect position; these spines are a significant handling hazard. Detailed meristic data and colouration descriptions are sparse in the accessible hobbyist literature, and the species is not commonly depicted in trade sources.
Habitat
Perrunichthys perruno is native to northern South America, associated with the Amazon and Orinoco drainage systems and probably occurring in the river basins of Peru, Colombia, and Venezuela. Pimelodid catfish of this size range typically inhabit the main channels and larger tributaries of lowland rivers, often seeking out deep runs, submerged wood, and undercut banks by day and moving into shallower areas to feed at night.
Water conditions in these rivers are warm throughout the year, with temperatures broadly in the range of 75–82 °F. pH and hardness vary considerably across northern South America — the Orinoco and its white-water tributaries tend toward near-neutral to mildly acidic conditions, while black-water systems run more acidic and soft. Without confirmed type-locality data it is not possible to assign precise water chemistry to this species with confidence; the cache notes data as sparse on this point.
Feeding
Perrunichthys perruno is a piscivore and generalist predator. Like other large pimelodids it feeds primarily on fish and large aquatic invertebrates, taking prey after dark when it is most active. Any fish or invertebrate that fits in its mouth is a potential prey item.
In the aquarium it will accept large meaty foods — whole or chunked fish, prawns, earthworms, and large sinking carnivore pellets. Tankmates must be substantially larger than the catfish's gape or they will be consumed; this is not a community fish in the conventional sense. It should be fed after lights-out so it can locate food on its own terms. Live food is taken eagerly but is not necessary; the fish adapts well to inert items once settled.
Mating
No confirmed breeding accounts of Perrunichthys perruno in home aquaria exist in the accessible literature. The species is too large, and the conditions required for reproductive conditioning — adequate space, induced hormonal stimulation, and controlled spawning environments — are beyond what a home aquarium can realistically provide.
Large pimelodid catfish in general are reproduced commercially via hormone-induced spawning in aquaculture facilities, particularly in South America and Asia, where the family has economic importance. Sexual dimorphism in Perrunichthys perruno is not documented in available sources; in related large pimelodids, mature females are often larger and deeper-bodied than males, but this should not be assumed without confirmation.
Breeding
Perrunichthys perruno is not bred in the home aquarium. It grows far too large for domestic breeding attempts, and like other big pimelodids it requires hormone-induced spawning to reproduce under captive conditions. Commercial aquaculture of large South American catfishes uses pituitary extract (hypophysation) or synthetic GnRH analogues to trigger spawning in broodstock held in large ponds or raceways — a process entirely outside the scope of home fish-keeping.
Aquarium specimens available in the trade are either wild-collected or farmed juveniles. Buyers should be aware that a fish offered at a few centimetres will grow into an animal exceeding half a metre, requiring a correspondingly large system to survive in good condition. There is no record of successful captive spawning of this species outside a professional facility.
In the aquarium
Perrunichthys perruno is a specialist's fish that outgrows nearly every home aquarium. Adults exceeding 23.5 in total length require systems in the thousands of litres — public aquaria or dedicated pond facilities are the realistic long-term home. Purchasing a juvenile with the intention of re-homing it later is a common but often poorly executed plan; prospective keepers should have the end-point facilities arranged before acquiring the fish.
Water should be warm (75–82 °F), near-neutral to mildly acidic (pH approximately 6.5–7.5), and well-oxygenated with strong filtration to match the bioload of a large predatory catfish. Because the skin is completely scaleless, this species is sensitive to copper-based treatments and many standard aquarium medications — half-dose is often advised when treatment is unavoidable, and the fish should be monitored closely. The locking dorsal and pectoral spines are a serious handling hazard: do not net this fish; move it in a container. As a nocturnal predator it needs heavy cover and subdued lighting, and it must be housed only with tankmates too large to swallow — most tankmates in a standard community are candidates for predation.
Conservation
Perrunichthys perruno has not been formally assessed by the IUCN Red List; its conservation status is Not Evaluated (NE). The species is poorly documented in the scientific literature, which means that even basic data on population size, range extent, and trends are not publicly available.
The broader conservation pressures on large river catfish in northern South America are well established: habitat degradation from dam construction, sediment loading from deforestation, and targeted fishing pressure on large-bodied pimelodids (which are commercially important food fishes across the region) all represent potential threats. Without a formal assessment it is not possible to characterise the risk to this species specifically, but the general vulnerability of large, slow-maturing river catfish to habitat modification and overfishing is a legitimate concern.
