Phractocephalus hemioliopterus, the redtail catfish, is among the most dramatic — and most irresponsible — purchases a new aquarist can make: a boldly patterned giant of the Amazon and Orinoco basins that reaches 53 in and 44 kg in the wild and grows relentlessly from the palm-sized juvenile sold in fish shops into a fish that requires a tank the size of a small swimming pool. It is one of the great iconic catfishes of South America, recognised immediately by its black-and-white body and brick-red caudal fin, and it is a genuinely charismatic animal — but it belongs in a public aquarium or specialist facility, not a home tank.

Taxonomy & naming

Phractocephalus hemioliopterus was described by the German naturalist Marcus Elieser Bloch and the German-born physician and naturalist Johann Gottlob Theaenus Schneider in 1801, based on specimens from South America, and the combination has remained stable. It is the sole living representative of the genus Phractocephalus; a second, larger species, P. nassi, is known only from the fossil record of the Miocene Urumaco Formation in Venezuela, confirming that the group once had a broader diversity.

Phractocephalus belongs to the family Pimelodidae — the long-whiskered catfishes — a speciose Neotropical family that includes many familiar large river catfishes. Older literature occasionally placed the species under broad wastebasket genera such as Silurus or Pimelodus before the genus Phractocephalus was established; the Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, California Academy of Sciences) treats Phractocephalus hemioliopterus as the valid name. In Brazilian Portuguese the species is known as pirarara, a Tupi word; in trade it is almost universally sold as redtail catfish or red-tailed catfish, sometimes banana catfish for the pale-bodied juvenile stage.

Morphology

The redtail catfish has a massive, broad, depressed head — almost as wide as the body — with a very wide terminal mouth carrying three pairs of long barbels: one maxillary pair (the long whiskers that name the group) and two pairs of shorter mandibular barbels. The body is stout and deepens with age. Colouration is unmistakable: a dark grey to black dorsal surface sharply divided from a clean white or pale-cream underside, with a broad white lateral stripe along the flanks, and a brilliant orange-red caudal fin that gives the species its common name. The dorsal and pectoral fins carry the stiff, serrated, locking spines typical of Siluriformes.

FishBase records a maximum total length of 53 in and a maximum weight of 44.2 kg, with a common length around 23.5 in in the wild. Commercial aquaculture fish and very old wild individuals may exceed these figures, with some reports citing lengths approaching 71 in on large farms. Sexual maturity is reached at around 33.5 in TL. The skin is entirely scaleless and naked — there are no scutes, plates, or armour of any kind — which makes this species sensitive to copper-based medications and many other treatments, as the drug passes directly into the body without the buffer of scales.

Habitat

Phractocephalus hemioliopterus is native to the Amazon and Orinoco river basins, with a range spanning Colombia, Venezuela, Guyana, Ecuador, Peru, Bolivia and Brazil. It inhabits the main channels and large tributaries of these river systems, favouring deep, slow to moderate-flow sections near submerged wood and undercut banks where it can shelter during the day.

Water conditions across its range vary from white-water (turbid, nutrient-rich, near-neutral) to clear-water rivers, but the species is not a blackwater specialist. The parameters documented for this species — temperature 70–79 °F, pH 6.0–7.5, hardness 2–12 °dH — reflect a tolerance of a range of warm, soft to moderately hard, slightly acidic to neutral river water. In white-water rivers of the western Amazon it encounters near-neutral conditions with moderate hardness; it is not confined to extreme acidic blackwater.

Feeding

Phractocephalus hemioliopterus is a large, opportunistic piscivore and benthic predator. In the wild it takes fish, crustaceans, fallen fruits and any other suitably sized prey it encounters near the riverbed, hunting primarily at night with its highly developed barbels and lateral-line system. Its enormous mouth allows it to swallow prey whole, and it readily takes fish up to a substantial fraction of its own body length.

In the aquarium it should be offered large meaty foods: whole or chunked fish (lance fish, whitebait, tilapia), large prawns and shrimp, and high-quality large sinking pellets formulated for predatory catfishes. Fruit — particularly bananas and mangoes — is accepted and reflects a natural component of the Amazonian diet during fruit-fall seasons. Any tankmate small enough to fit in the mouth will be eaten; this is a matter of biology rather than aggression. Feed sizeable meals two or three times per week for adult fish rather than daily, to avoid water quality problems from the heavy bioload.

Mating

Virtually nothing is documented about the natural reproductive behaviour of Phractocephalus hemioliopterus in the wild. Given its size and the vast river systems it inhabits, detailed field observation of spawning behaviour has not been possible. The species is presumed to broadcast spawn in open water, as is common among large Pimelodid catfishes, though this has not been confirmed from direct observation in nature.

In aquaculture, spawning is induced hormonally using carp pituitary extract or synthetic GnRHa injections under controlled hatchery conditions in Brazil and elsewhere. This is standard practice for large commercial catfishes across South America where the home market for food fish, and to a lesser extent the aquarium juvenile trade, is supplied by farms. The species does not exhibit the parental care behaviours documented in armoured callichthyid catfishes or the brood-parasitism of Synodontis; once eggs are stripped and fertilised artificially, the hatchery provides all subsequent care.

Breeding

Phractocephalus hemioliopterus is not bred in the home aquarium. The species grows far too large for any domestic tank to house a sexually mature pair — animals must reach approximately 33.5 in TL before maturity, at which point a single fish already requires a tank beyond the reach of virtually all hobbyists — and spawning requires hormonal induction in a hatchery setting. Aquaculture farms in Brazil, Peru and Colombia breed the species commercially using carp pituitary or synthetic GnRHa injection to trigger ovulation and sperm release, with eggs stripped, fertilised artificially and incubated in hatchery trays.

All redtail catfish sold in the aquarium trade originate from this aquaculture supply chain or, to a lesser extent, from wild capture of juveniles. There are no verified records of the species reproducing spontaneously under aquarium conditions. Keepers who acquire this species should plan for a fish that will grow for decades and require facility-grade housing long before it could ever approach breeding condition.

In the aquarium

The redtail catfish is one of the most commonly misrepresented species in the freshwater trade: juveniles of 2–3 in are cheap, spectacularly coloured and appealing, and retail staff rarely explain that the fish will grow at roughly 1–2 in per month for its first few years and ultimately require a tank of at minimum 360 × 240 × 47 in (approximately 12 × 8 × 4 ft) for a single adult — a cramped lifelong home for an animal that swims vast stretches of Amazonian river in the wild. This is the size trap in its starkest form. Rehoming adult redtails is extraordinarily difficult; public aquaria are saturated with donated specimens. Do not purchase this fish unless you have confirmed, long-term access to a facility capable of housing it at adult size.

Water should be maintained at 70–79 °F, pH 6.0–7.5, with soft to moderately hard conditions and meticulous filtration — a fish that can weigh 44 kg produces a commensurate bioload. The skin is entirely scaleless, so this species is highly sensitive to copper-based treatments and many standard medications; halve standard doses at minimum and use copper-free alternatives wherever possible. The locking pectoral and dorsal spines are very large in adult fish and extremely difficult to remove from a net — never net a redtail catfish; move it only with a large padded container or purpose-built handling gear, as the spines can inflict serious lacerations. Phractocephalus is a nocturnal predator that requires large cave-like cover and will consume any tankmate it can engulf; companions must be too large to swallow, and the tank must be reassessed for safety as the catfish grows.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List assessed Phractocephalus hemioliopterus as Least Concern in 2025. The species has a wide distribution across the Amazon and Orinoco basins and is considered widespread and tolerably abundant across that range; the population is thought to be stable, though no precise population estimates exist.

The species is heavily targeted by artisanal and commercial fisheries across its South American range for food — it is a large, meaty, commercially valuable food fish in Brazil, Peru and Colombia — and is intensively farmed for both the food-fish and the ornamental juvenile trade. This aquaculture base substantially reduces reliance on wild-caught fish for the aquarium supply chain. Larger systemic pressures on Amazonian river systems — dam construction, deforestation-driven sedimentation, mercury contamination from gold mining, and climate-driven hydrological shifts — represent the long-term threat to this and many other large Amazonian fishes, even if the current assessment remains Least Concern.
