Taxonomy & naming
Physopyxis lyra was described by the American palaeontologist and ichthyologist Edward Drinker Cope in 1872, with the type locality given as the Río Guaviare of Colombia, a major right-bank tributary of the Orinoco. The species belongs to the family Doradidae — the thorny or talking catfishes — a strictly South American group currently holding around 90 valid species. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, California Academy of Sciences) treats Physopyxis lyra as the valid combination.
The genus Physopyxis is a small genus within Doradidae; its members share the characteristic lateral-line scutes and spine-locking mechanism that give the family its common name "thorny catfishes" (the audible stridulation earns them "talking catfishes" as a parallel vernacular). Within Doradidae, Physopyxis is distinguished from larger relatives such as Doras and Oxydoras by its notably small adult size and slender body form. Older pre-revision literature may list the species under broader groupings, but the current genus assignment is Physopyxis.
Morphology
Physopyxis lyra is a small, slender catfish with a relatively elongated body by doradid standards. Adults typically measure 1.5–2 in standard length, rarely exceeding 2 in SL — among the smallest members of the family. The body is encased in the characteristic doradid armour: a row of bony lateral-line scutes studded with backward-pointing spinelets runs from behind the head to the caudal peduncle, giving the fish a rough, almost file-like feel along the flanks. The head is depressed and broad, with three pairs of barbels: one long maxillary pair reaching toward the pectoral base and two shorter mandibular pairs.
The dorsal and pectoral fins carry stiff, serrated, locking spines — the pectoral spines in particular are extremely sharp, and when locked erect they can catch in a net and deliver a painful puncture to an unwary keeper. Colouration is typically a pale brown or tan with darker mottling or banding; pigmentation can vary with the substrate and water tint. The skin between the scutes is scaleless and thin, making the species more sensitive than a scaled fish to copper-based treatments and certain medications.
Habitat
The type locality is the Río Guaviare of Colombia, which drains into the Orinoco. The species is considered to range more broadly within the Amazon and Orinoco drainages of northern and central South America, inhabiting the soft-bottomed, slow-to-moderate tributaries and smaller rivers characteristic of lowland Amazonian forest systems.
Like most doradids, Physopyxis lyra is a benthic fish of soft substrates — sand, silt, and leaf-litter accumulations — where it can root for invertebrates under cover after dark. Water conditions in its native range are warm, soft, and slightly acidic: temperatures typically 75–82 °F, pH around 5.8–7.0, with low total dissolved solids. These are classic Amazonian blackwater or clearwater conditions rather than hard alkaline water, and care should be taken not to keep the species in hard, alkaline water more suited to African rift-lake inhabitants.
Feeding
Physopyxis lyra is a nocturnal benthic omnivore. In the wild it forages the bottom after dark, picking through leaf litter and soft substrate for small invertebrates — insect larvae, worms, micro-crustaceans — and organic detritus. It is a micro-predator by nature, targeting prey small enough to be engulfed by its modest mouth.
In the aquarium it accepts sinking catfish pellets and wafers, frozen bloodworms, tubifex, and mosquito larvae readily. Live or frozen small invertebrates are ideal conditioning foods. Because it is nocturnal and, in a mixed community, will be outcompeted by bolder daytime feeders, food should be offered after the main lights are extinguished so it feeds without competition. Its small size means the amounts required are modest, but regular small feedings in the evening are more effective than large daytime offerings.
Mating
The reproductive behaviour of Physopyxis lyra in the wild is not well documented. As a doradid, it almost certainly produces sounds via pectoral-spine stridulation — a behaviour documented across the family and believed to play a role in social cohesion and courtship. Doradids in general are not brood parasites or bubble-nest builders; the family is associated with demersal spawning with eggs deposited near or under cover.
Data on specific courtship behaviour in Physopyxis lyra are sparse. The fish is noted to be highly social in the wild — likely encountered in groups — and group-kept individuals in the aquarium are more natural and likely more behaviourally active than singletons. Given the limited data, specifics of courtship in this species should be treated as unknown.
Breeding
Breeding Physopyxis lyra in the home aquarium has not been achieved or documented in the available literature. As a small doradid its reproductive mode is presumed to involve demersal egg-laying, but the details of spawning site selection, egg adhesion, and any parental guarding behaviour are unknown from either field or captive observation. Most small, wild-collected doradids remain essentially unspawned in home aquaria.
Until reliable accounts of captive breeding emerge, this species should be treated as not bred in aquaria. Keepers interested in breeding attempts should focus on providing excellent water quality, a varied diet, and a species-only or similarly sized peaceful group setup, which may encourage natural conditioning — but successful spawning should not be expected.
In the aquarium
Despite its modest size, Physopyxis lyra benefits from a well-considered setup. A tank of at least 23.5 in is appropriate for a small group; the substrate should be fine sand or a sand-silt mix that allows the fish to rest on the bottom without abrasion from sharp gravel, which can damage the soft skin between scutes. Dense planting, driftwood, and leaf litter (Indian almond leaves or oak leaves) recreate the sheltered, tannin-stained environment of its home rivers and are appreciated. The fish is strictly nocturnal and should have cave-like hides or tangles of roots available for daytime refuge.
Water parameters should match its native soft, slightly acidic conditions: temperature 75–82 °F, pH 5.8–7.0, low to moderate hardness. It must not be kept in hard alkaline water. Because its skin is scaleless between the bony scutes, it is medium-sensitive to copper-based treatments and some other medications — use conservative doses and avoid prophylactic chemical treatments. Its locking pectoral spines are extremely sharp and will tangle badly in a fine-mesh net, risking injury to both the fish and the keeper; always move it in a container. The species is peaceful toward tankmates, and small groups of conspecifics are preferable to isolated individuals.
Conservation
Physopyxis lyra is assessed as Least Concern on the IUCN Red List. Its known type locality is the Río Guaviare of Colombia, a basin that has experienced deforestation, agricultural expansion, and gold-mining activity in parts of its catchment, but the actual impact on this small catfish's populations has not been quantified.
The species is rarely encountered in the aquarium trade, and what supply does exist is almost certainly wild-collected given the absence of captive breeding records — a situation that merits monitoring if trade pressure were to increase. The broader Amazonian and Orinoco lowland habitats it occupies face ongoing pressures from land-use change and sedimentation.
