Taxonomy & naming
Farlowella venezuelensis was described by Martín Salazar in 1964 and the species was subsequently reviewed within the context of the genus-wide revision by Retzer and Page (1997), which clarified the limits of Farlowella species across tropical South America. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) lists Farlowella venezuelensis Martín Salazar, 1964 as the valid name.
The genus Farlowella Eigenmann & Eigenmann, 1889 belongs to the subfamily Loricariinae of the family Loricariidae. Within Loricariinae the genus is placed in a clade of elongated biofilm-grazing catfishes sharing a depressed body, an exceptionally long rostrum, and a covering of bony lateral plates. Farlowella is the largest genus of twig catfishes and spans a wide geographic range across lowland tropical South America, from the Guianas and Trinidad south to the La Plata basin.
The species epithet venezuelensis is a Neo-Latin toponym meaning 'of Venezuela', referring to the country of origin of the type specimens. It is one of a small number of Farlowella with distribution centred on the northern Venezuelan drainages flowing toward the Caribbean and Gulf of Paria.
Morphology
Farlowella venezuelensis reaches approximately 8 in standard length (SL), making it one of the larger members of the genus. Body form follows the standard Farlowella plan: an extreme rostral elongation producing a needle-thin silhouette, a body encased in keeled bony scutes arranged in longitudinal rows, and a tapering caudal peduncle terminating in a forked tail. The overall shape closely mimics a submerged twig or root fragment — a camouflage effective against visually hunting predators in the shallow, woody margins these fish inhabit.
Colouration is typically pale tan to yellowish-brown with one or two faint dark lateral stripes running from the tip of the rostrum to the caudal base. The undersurface is unarmoured and pale. Fin membranes are clear to slightly yellowish. The inferior mouth bears fine brush-like teeth adapted for scraping biofilm from smooth substrate surfaces.
Sexual dimorphism follows the pattern seen across the genus: adult males in breeding condition develop small dermal odontodes on the lateral margins of the snout and on the pectoral spines. Gravid females are visibly broader through the abdomen when viewed from above and may carry a slightly swollen ventral profile.
Habitat
Farlowella venezuelensis is known from the Guaripiche River basin and, more broadly, drainages of the lower Orinoco region and northeastern coastal rivers of Venezuela. The Guaripiche drains into the Gulf of Paria in Monagas state — an Atlantic-slope system, hydrologically and biogeographically distinct from the main Orinoco channel — while associated drainages in Sucre state flow northward toward the Caribbean coast.
These northeastern Venezuelan river systems are warm, relatively low-gradient lowland rivers passing through coastal plains vegetation, gallery forest, and areas of former savanna. Water conditions in similar river types in the region tend toward warm temperatures (75–84 °F), neutral to slightly acidic pH, and low to moderate mineralisation — though specific water-chemistry records for F. venezuelensis localities are absent from the available literature.
Microhabitat preferences, inferred from the biology of the genus, centre on areas with submerged vegetation, root tangles, fallen wood, and aquatic macrophytes in the shallow river margins where biofilm accumulates. The restricted nature of the Guaripiche basin and surrounding coastal drainages gives this species a relatively small total range area.
Feeding
Farlowella venezuelensis is a biofilm grazer, like all members of the genus. It feeds by pressing its inferior sucker mouth against submerged surfaces — plant stems, wood, smooth rocks, leaf litter — and rasping the thin layer of algae, diatoms, bacteria, and fine organic detritus that constitutes biofilm or aufwuchs. The fine multi-cusped teeth are adapted precisely for this low-energy scraping mode of feeding rather than excavating or biting.
Trophic level data from FishBase (2.4 — a low value consistent with algivory and herbivory) align with a diet composed predominantly of plant-derived material and associated microorganisms. In the aquarium, biofilm-coated surfaces — mature driftwood, algae-covered glass, broad-leaved plants such as Echinodorus or Anubias — are the primary feeding substrate. Supplementary foods should be slow-sinking and vegetable-based: algae wafers, spirulina tablets, blanched courgette (zucchini), or spinach. The species is a slow and deliberate feeder and should not compete with faster-moving tank inhabitants for supplemental foods.
Mating
Reproductive behaviour in F. venezuelensis has not been specifically documented in the literature. Based on the well-studied behaviour of congeners such as F. acus, courtship in Farlowella involves the male closely attending a receptive female across flat surfaces, his snout near her flanks. Males in breeding condition are recognisable by snout odontodes and greater activity relative to their normally sedentary demeanour.
Conditioning a pair for breeding requires high-quality, varied feeding, consistent water quality, and periodic water-change routines that mimic natural seasonal variation. The restricted natural range of F. venezuelensis means that wild-caught specimens entering the hobby are uncommon, and captive breeding attempts are correspondingly rare. Any successful breeding data contributed by hobbyists would add significantly to what is known about this species.
Breeding
No species-specific captive breeding records for Farlowella venezuelensis are present in the available literature. Based on the well-established reproductive biology of the genus — particularly the closely documented accounts for F. acus, F. vittata, and related twig catfishes — the most likely pattern involves adhesive eggs deposited by the female on a flat, clean surface (aquarium glass, a broad smooth leaf, or a flat stone), followed by paternal guarding and fanning of the egg mass until fry hatch and disperse.
Incubation in the genus typically spans around one week at temperatures of 79–82 °F. Newly hatched fry are miniature adults, capable of clinging to surfaces and grazing biofilm within days of emergence. Given the species' conservation status (Endangered) and rarity in captivity, any documented breeding success would be both scientifically noteworthy and of practical conservation value.
In the aquarium
Farlowella venezuelensis is a rare fish in captivity. Specimens reaching the trade are almost certainly wild-caught, and given the species' Endangered status, hobbyists acquiring this fish carry a responsibility to provide exemplary care and, where possible, attempt captive reproduction.
Husbandry requirements mirror those of other Farlowella: a long, shallow tank (20–30 US gal minimum for a pair) with gentle filtration, good oxygenation, and warm water (75–82 °F) at neutral to slightly acidic pH. The fish spends much of its time motionless on flat surfaces; tank decoration should provide ample broad-leaved plants, smooth wood, and flat stones with established algal growth. A mature, well-cycled tank with stable parameters is essential — Farlowella are intolerant of ammonia, nitrite, or significant nitrate accumulation.
Tankmates should be peaceful and slow-moving. Nippy fish will damage the delicate rostrum and fins; boisterous fish will out-compete Farlowella at feeding time. Small tetras, Corydoras, and other docile community fish are suitable companions. Avoid keeping with other sucker-mouthed catfishes that compete for flat grazing surfaces unless the tank is large.
Because of the species' rarity and threatened status, sourcing from reputable suppliers with documented provenance is strongly encouraged. Tank-raised specimens, if available, should be prioritised over wild imports.
Conservation
Farlowella venezuelensis is assessed as Endangered (EN) on the IUCN Red List (assessed 24 May 2017). The Endangered designation reflects the species' highly restricted range — principally the Guaripiche River basin and associated coastal drainages of northeastern Venezuela — combined with threats to freshwater habitats in that region.
Northeastern Venezuela faces significant and ongoing pressures from deforestation, agricultural runoff leading to sedimentation and eutrophication, and modifications to river flow regimes. The coastal plains of Monagas and Sucre states, where F. venezuelensis occurs, have experienced substantial land-use change. For a species dependent on clean water and biofilm-rich submerged surfaces, habitat degradation at the watershed level poses a direct threat to feeding and reproductive success.
The limited range means that even localised disturbances can affect a meaningful proportion of the total population. No captive-breeding programme is known to exist for this species, and it is rarely encountered in the trade. Conservation of northeastern Venezuelan river ecosystems — through watershed protection, riparian buffer zones, and monitoring of freshwater biodiversity — is the most important lever for ensuring this species' survival.
