Taxonomy & naming
Hypoptopoma machadoi was described by Aquino and Schaefer in 2010 in their revision of the genus Hypoptopoma, published in the Bulletin of the American Museum of Natural History (volume 336, pages 1–110). The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) recognises the valid combination Hypoptopoma machadoi.
The genus Hypoptopoma sits within the subfamily Hypoptopomatinae, the loricariid lineage that includes many of the small, flat-headed 'dwarf' suckermouth catfishes. The species was named in honour of Antonio Machado-Allison, the Venezuelan ichthyologist, recognising his work on the fishes of the region in which the species occurs.
The 2010 revision remains the primary scientific account of the species. It is not part of the aquarium hobby and carries no L-number.
Morphology
Hypoptopoma machadoi reaches about 3 in total length, making it one of the larger members of its genus. It shares the broad, depressed head, laterally set eyes, and bony body armour of overlapping scutes typical of Hypoptopoma and of loricariids generally.
The characters that diagnose the species and separate it from its congeners are set out in the 2010 revision and rest on details of plating, proportion, and meristics. No detailed published description of the live coloration is available; the species is known principally from preserved material.
Habitat
The species occurs in the Rio Orinoco basin of Venezuela, extending into the Rio Meta drainage in Colombia. The Orinoco and its tributaries are large tropical lowland rivers subject to strong seasonal flooding, ranging from clear and blackwater headwaters to turbid whitewater main channels across the Llanos plains.
Hypoptopoma machadoi is a freshwater, benthopelagic fish of tropical waters. As is typical for the genus, it is thought to be a facultative air-breather. No species-specific data on temperature, pH, or microhabitat have been published.
Feeding
No diet study has been published for Hypoptopoma machadoi. Members of the Hypoptopomatinae are generally grazers of aufwuchs — algae, diatoms, biofilm, and fine detritus rasped from submerged surfaces with the suckermouth — and a comparable feeding mode is plausible here, but it has not been documented for this species directly.

No data on reproduction, spawning mode, clutch size, or parental care have been published for Hypoptopoma machadoi.
In the aquarium
Hypoptopoma machadoi is not kept in the aquarium hobby and carries no L-number or trade record. There is no body of husbandry experience for the species. Care would have to be inferred from related Hypoptopomatinae — small, peaceful grazers that require clean, well-oxygenated water and ample grazing surfaces — but no species-specific guidance exists.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assessed Hypoptopoma machadoi as Least Concern (assessment dated 2020), reflecting its distribution across the Orinoco basin and the Meta drainage and the absence of identified major threats. The broader Orinoco system faces pressures from deforestation, agricultural runoff, and hydroelectric development, but the species is not currently considered threatened.
