Taxonomy & naming
Aphanotorulus ammophilus was formally described by Armbruster and Page in 1996 in Copeia (volume 1996, number 2, page 385), from specimens collected at Río San Carlos, Portuguesa drainage at Caño Hondo, Cojedes State, Venezuela (9°31′51″N, 68°39′39″W). The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) recognises Aphanotorulus ammophilus as the valid combination; the earlier combination Hypostomus ammophilus is now treated as a synonym.
The genus Aphanotorulus was erected to accommodate a group of flattened hypostomines with distinctive sexual dimorphism and particular ecological affinities. The name derives from the Greek aphanes (hidden) combined with the Latin torulus (a small muscle or strap), though the precise intended meaning of the combination in the original description is not expanded upon. The genus was revised more comprehensively by Ray and Armbruster in 2016 in Zootaxa (4072(5): 501–539).
The specific epithet ammophilus is straightforwardly descriptive: Greek ammos (sand) combined with philos (loving), alluding to the species' strong association with sandy substrates in the wild — a habitat preference unusual enough among plecos to be commemorated in the name. In the aquarium hobby the species circulates under two L-numbers: L094 and L123. Both codes refer to the same valid species and the L123 label should be considered synonymous for practical purposes.
Morphology
Adults of A. ammophilus reach approximately 6.5 in standard length (SL), placing them in the mid-size range for hypostomine plecos. The body is comparatively flattened dorsoventrally relative to many Hypostomus relatives — a profile adaptation consistent with life on open sandy river beds where shelter is limited. The snout is broad and depressed, and the oral disc has a jagged posterior edge rather than the smooth margin seen in several congeners.
The most striking morphological feature of this species is the sexual dimorphism expressed by nuptial males. During breeding condition, males develop extraordinarily elongated bristle-like odontodes that erupt densely across the back and flanks posterior to the dorsal fin, as well as along the interopercular region. These bristles are among the longest seen in any hypostomine pleco relative to body size, giving breeding males an almost shaggy appearance. Females and juveniles carry normal-length odontodes and show none of this ornamentation. Armbruster noted that clear sexual dimorphism and the flatter body profile together help distinguish all Aphanotorulus species from the more convex-bodied Hypostomus. Colouration in preserved and live specimens is typically a brownish base with darker spotting or mottling, though hobbyist records of live colouration are sparse.
Habitat
Aphanotorulus ammophilus is known from the Orinoco basin of Venezuela, specifically from the Middle Orinoco corridor and the Apure and Portuguesa tributaries. The type locality in the Portuguesa drainage sits in the seasonally flooded Llanos lowlands, a vast savanna plain where rivers swell dramatically during the wet season and contract to lower, clearer channels in the dry season.
As the name implies, this species is most consistently collected over sandy substrate. It is an uncommon ecological specialist among plecos, which are more typically associated with rocky reefs, root tangles, or submerged wood. Open sandy reaches with some current appear to be the core microhabitat. Water conditions in the Portuguesa and Apure tributaries fluctuate seasonally: the wet season brings warmer, more turbid, softer water, while the dry season produces clearer, somewhat cooler, more mineralised conditions. No detailed water-chemistry records for A. ammophilus collection sites have been published. Oxygen levels in current-swept sandy runs are generally high.
Feeding
Like most hypostomine plecos, Aphanotorulus ammophilus is a scraping algivore and biofilm grazer in the wild. The ventrally positioned oral disc, equipped with numerous small teeth and a rasping action, is adapted to remove algal films, diatoms, and fine organic matter from hard surfaces and, in this species's case, from the surface of submerged sand grains and exposed rock outcrops.
No detailed dietary studies have been published for this species specifically. General loricariid biology, corroborated by the gut contents studies on related hypostomines, suggests a diet composed primarily of periphyton (attached algae and associated detritus), fine organic particles, and incidentally ingested sand grains. In aquaria, A. ammophilus should be offered the standard hypostomine diet: high-quality sinking algae wafers, spirulina-based foods, and blanched vegetables such as courgette, cucumber, and sweet potato. Occasional offerings of soft wood for biofilm grazing may be accepted, though this is not a wood-eating xylophage like Panaqolus or Panaque.
Mating
Detailed observations of courtship behaviour in Aphanotorulus ammophilus under aquarium conditions have not been published. Based on the dramatic sexual dimorphism — particularly the extraordinarily elongated bristle odontodes that nuptial males develop — it is clear that this species undergoes a significant physiological transformation during the breeding season, consistent with male–male competition or mate-choice signalling.
In related hypostomine genera, males typically become territorial around potential spawning sites and display to rivals and prospective mates using erected fins, body posturing, and the visual signal of their interopercular or dorsal odontodes. Given the degree of bristle development in A. ammophilus males, sexual selection pressure on male ornamentation is likely substantial. No aquarium breeding records appear in published hobbyist databases for this species.
Breeding
No confirmed aquarium breeding records are known for Aphanotorulus ammophilus. The species has a modest following in specialist catfish circles — PlanetCatfish records fewer than 20 registered keepers as of the time of writing — and captive reproduction has not been documented.
Based on general hypostomine biology, cave spawning with paternal egg-guarding is the expected reproductive mode. Males in related genera select and defend a cavity or crevice, and if spawning occurs the male would fan the eggs to maintain oxygenation. The strong nuptial dimorphism in this species suggests males invest considerably in competition for females or territories, and conditioning with varied foods and seasonal temperature cues may be prerequisites for inducing spawning. Any keeper achieving reproduction would be reporting a significant first for the species.
In the aquarium
Aphanotorulus ammophilus is a specialist species that demands attention to substrate — a sand or fine-gravel bed is strongly preferable to bare glass or coarse gravel, both to reflect the species' natural ecology and to allow the natural scraping and resting behaviour the flat body profile is adapted for. A tank of at least 30 US gal is appropriate for an adult, with good filtration providing moderate current.
Water parameters should broadly mirror Orinoco lowland conditions: temperature approximately 75–82 °F, pH 6.5–7.5, soft to moderately hard water. Good oxygenation is important. The species is nocturnal to crepuscular in feeding activity and will appreciate scattered flat stones or broad cave-forming décor to shelter under during daylight hours.
The spectacular bristle odontodes on breeding males are best observed in a species-appropriate setting; this is not a fish that performs well in bright, sparsely decorated community tanks. Only a handful of specialist catfish keepers in Europe and North America have maintained this species, and it remains a genuine rarity in the hobby. It should be kept with peaceful mid-water tankmates that will not compete for bottom territory.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assessed Aphanotorulus ammophilus as Least Concern in 2020, reflecting its occurrence across multiple river systems within the Orinoco basin and the absence of documented range decline. The Orinoco basin as a whole remains one of South America's least industrially impacted major river systems, with large tracts of the drainage retaining natural hydrology.
The species is collected for the ornamental trade in small numbers, appearing occasionally at specialist catfish importers. Trade pressure is not considered significant at current collection volumes. Longer-term threats to the Orinoco system include agricultural expansion, sediment loading from deforestation in Andean headwaters, and potential hydroelectric development, but these pressures have not yet translated into measurable population declines for A. ammophilus. No captive-bred specimens are commercially available, so the hobby continues to rely on wild imports.
