Pimelodella gracilis, the graceful pimelodella, is a slender, big-whiskered catfish of the major South American river systems — Orinoco, Amazon and La Plata — that brings the long-barbelled elegance of the family Heptapteridae into a size that fits a mid-sized home aquarium. Reaching around 6.5–7 in as an adult, it is a social, nocturnal benthic omnivore that forages the riverbed after dark, carries locking pectoral spines, and shares the scaleless-skin medication sensitivity common to all catfish without bony armour.

Taxonomy & naming

Pimelodella gracilis was described by the French zoologist Achille Valenciennes in 1835, originally placed in the broad genus Pimelodus. The species was later transferred to Pimelodella, a genus erected for the smaller, more slender long-whiskered catfishes once bundled loosely under Pimelodus or Silurus by earlier workers. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, California Academy of Sciences) recognises Pimelodella gracilis (Valenciennes, 1835) as the valid name, and the combination has been stable for decades.

The family assignment has shifted in line with molecular phylogenetics: Pimelodella now sits in Heptapteridae rather than in the broader Pimelodidae sensu lato. Heptapteridae is a South American family of mostly small to medium-sized river catfishes, and Pimelodella is one of its most species-rich genera, containing over 70 described species. Within the genus P. gracilis is one of the most widespread, occurring across three of the continent's largest drainage systems.

The species epithet gracilis is Latin for 'slender' or 'graceful', a fitting description of the long-bodied, attenuated build that distinguishes this catfish from the deeper-bodied pimelodids.

Morphology

Pimelodella gracilis has the classic heptapterid form: a long, laterally compressed body, a broad and somewhat flattened head, and three pairs of barbels — one long maxillary pair that extends well past the pectoral fins, and two shorter mandibular pairs beneath the chin. The body is silvery grey to pale brown on the flanks, often with a faint dark mid-lateral stripe running from behind the eye to the base of the tail. The underside is pale. The fins are largely transparent or lightly pigmented.

Adult size is around 6.5–7 in standard length (FishBase records a maximum of 7 in SL); in practice most aquarium specimens reach 6–6.5 in. Like all members of Pimelodella, this species is entirely scaleless — the skin is naked — which makes it more vulnerable to copper-based and many other medications than a scaled fish. A stiff, serrated, locking spine sits at the front of the dorsal fin and at the leading edge of each pectoral fin; these spines can lock erect and are difficult to remove from netting without injury to fish or keeper. The humeral process (a bony projection above the pectoral base) is also spiky.

Habitat

Pimelodella gracilis is native to three of South America's great drainage basins: the Orinoco (Venezuela and Colombia), the Amazon (Brazil and Peru) and the La Plata system (Argentina and southern Brazil). It is a demersal, benthic species associated with the soft and sandy substrates of slow-to-moderate river channels and floodplain waters, where it shelters among leaf litter, submerged wood and root tangles by day.

Water parameters across its range span a moderate band: temperatures between 20 and 75 °F, pH from roughly 6.0 to 7.8, and soft to moderately hard water (FishBase notes 5–20 dH). The cooler end of this range — shared with parts of the La Plata basin — means it tolerates slightly lower temperatures than many Amazonian species. It is not a blackwater-only fish; the La Plata system in particular carries harder, more neutral water than the classic Amazonian acidic igapó, so assuming uniformly soft acidic conditions across the range would be an overstatement.

Feeding

In the wild Pimelodella gracilis is a nocturnal to crepuscular benthic omnivore and micro-predator, foraging the riverbed from dusk onward for aquatic invertebrates — worms, insect larvae and small crustaceans — along with organic detritus. Its long maxillary barbels are sensory antennae that sweep the substrate in low-light conditions.

In the aquarium it is straightforward to feed. It accepts sinking pellets and wafers, tablet foods, frozen bloodworm, tubifex, brine shrimp and similar invertebrate-based frozen foods, and prepared catfish diets. Because it is naturally nocturnal and competes poorly with more aggressive surface or midwater feeders in full light, food is best offered after lights-out to ensure this species gets its share without stress. It does not require live food, though it takes it readily.

Mating

Breeding behaviour in Pimelodella gracilis has not been documented in the aquarium hobby (ScotCat notes breeding is not reported in captivity), and detailed wild spawning observations are lacking for this species. Based on the biology of the family Heptapteridae and the genus Pimelodella broadly, reproduction is likely to involve egg-scattering over substrate with limited parental care, in the manner general to many small pimeloid-grade catfishes — but this is not confirmed for P. gracilis specifically.

Sexual dimorphism is not pronounced and sexing outside of the breeding season is difficult; mature females may be slightly fuller-bodied than males. The social structure of this species is not demanding — it coexists in small groups without strong territorial behaviour — but no account describes how a spawning pair or group separates or prepares.

Breeding

Pimelodella gracilis has not been bred in the home aquarium to any documented degree; ScotCat's factsheet, the main hobby reference for this species, states that breeding has not been reported in captivity. It is therefore honest to say that aquarists should not expect to breed this fish, and no reliable method is established.

For keepers interested in attempting it, the general approach used for small heptapterid catfishes involves conditioning a group on varied live and frozen foods, providing a seasonal temperature drop or a simulated rainy-season trigger (a large water change with slightly cooler, softer water), and offering a cave or sheltered substrate area. Whether eggs are adhesive, deposited in a cavity or scattered openly is not confirmed. Until reliable captive-breeding records emerge, P. gracilis is best regarded as a display fish rather than a breeding project.

In the aquarium

A tank of at least 25–30 US gal suits an adult Pimelodella gracilis comfortably; this species reaches 6.5–7 in and needs adequate open swimming space as well as daytime retreats. Provide caves, lengths of PVC pipe, clay pots or dense root tangles for cover — this fish is nocturnal and spends much of the day hidden. A soft sandy or fine-gravel substrate is preferred over bare glass or coarse gravel that can abrade the naked skin. Keep a tight lid: like many catfishes it explores at night and can find gaps.

Temperature of 68–75 °F suits it well and covers the La Plata end of its natural range; pH should sit between 6.0 and 7.8, and water should be soft to moderately hard. The species can be kept singly but is reported to be calmer and less prone to sporadic aggression when maintained in a small group; solitary specimens sometimes become skittish. Compatible tankmates are mid-sized peaceful fish that do not compete too aggressively for food at feeding time.

Two care points are non-negotiable. First, the skin is entirely scaleless, making P. gracilis sensitive to copper-based treatments and many other medications — always dose conservatively (half-dose is often advised) and avoid copper entirely if possible. Second, the locking pectoral and dorsal spines tangle immediately in netting and are difficult to free without injuring the fish or the keeper; always move this species in a container of water, never in a net.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List assesses Pimelodella gracilis as Least Concern, reflecting its wide distribution across three of South America's largest river systems — the Orinoco, Amazon and La Plata basins — and its apparent tolerance of a range of water conditions.

Although the species is not currently considered threatened, the river systems it inhabits face ongoing pressures from agricultural runoff, dam construction, floodplain conversion and seasonal water-quality changes linked to land-use change in Amazonian and Platense catchments. The species is collected for the ornamental trade but demand is moderate; most trade specimens are wild-caught given the absence of established captive-breeding methods. No targeted conservation measures are known to be in place.
