Taxonomy & naming
Platydoras hancockii was described by the French zoologist Achille Valenciennes in 1840. It belongs to the family Doradidae, the thorny or talking catfishes of South America, and to the genus Platydoras, a small group of broad, armour-plated doradids. The Catalog of Fishes treats Platydoras hancockii as the valid combination; the species has at times circulated in older literature and in the aquarium trade under the genus Amblydoras, a name still occasionally seen on labels and in older hobbyist references.
The genus name Platydoras combines the Greek platys, "broad, flat", with doras, "skin" or "leathery hide" — a reference to the flattened body and tough, plated skin shared across the family. The species epithet hancockii honours the English naturalist John Hancock, commemorated in several 19th-century South American fish descriptions of the period.
Morphology
Like other doradids, Platydoras hancockii is armoured rather than scaled: a row of bony, keeled plates (scutes) runs along each flank from behind the head to the base of the tail, each plate typically bearing a small backward-pointing spine. The body is elongated and somewhat flattened, the head broad and depressed, and three pairs of barbels — one long maxillary pair and two shorter mandibular pairs — probe the substrate as it forages. The dorsal and pectoral fins each carry a single stout, serrated, lockable spine that the fish can erect and hold rigid, a real hazard to an unwary hand or an unprotected net.
Colouration is a dark brown to blackish body with one or two pale cream-to-yellow longitudinal stripes running the length of the flank, giving good camouflage against a mottled, wood-strewn riverbed. Reported maximum size is about 6 in total length (FishBase; ScotCat gives roughly 6 inches), a genuinely adult size for the species and one worth planning tank space around from the outset — this is not a fish that stays tiny indefinitely, even though it is modest by doradid standards. As in all catfishes the skin lacks true scales, which has direct consequences for medicating the fish (see "In the aquarium").
Habitat
Platydoras hancockii is native to the Amazon and Orinoco basins of tropical South America, with records spanning the Rio Negro, Essequibo, Demerara and upper Orinoco drainages. It lives in slow-to-moderate flowing river channels, flooded forest margins and backwaters, typically over sand, leaf litter or submerged wood where it can wedge itself into cover during the day.
Water across its range is warm and only mildly acidic to neutral or slightly alkaline rather than extreme blackwater: FishBase gives a pH of roughly 6.0–8.0 and hardness of 5–19 dH at 73–82 °F, while ScotCat reports a similar 75–86 °F with pH 6.0–7.5. This flexibility across a broad South American range makes the species considerably more tolerant of local water chemistry than many soft-blackwater specialists, though stable, clean water remains important.
Feeding
This is a nocturnal, benthic omnivore and opportunistic micro-predator. In the wild it forages over the bottom after dark for aquatic invertebrates, detritus, fallen fruit and other organic matter, using its barbels to locate food buried in sand or leaf litter.
In the aquarium it is an enthusiastic and easy feeder, described as having a ferocious appetite and gorging readily at feeding time. It accepts sinking pellets, frozen foods and most prepared foods without fuss. Because it is most active after lights-out, offering food once the tank lighting is off ensures it is not out-competed by faster, diurnal tankmates for its share.
Mating
Detailed observations of courtship and spawning behaviour in Platydoras hancockii are not documented in the aquarium literature consulted here. Reliable sexing characters are likewise not established for this species in the sources available; keepers report no obvious external dimorphism, though this has not been rigorously studied.
Breeding
Breeding of Platydoras hancockii has not been documented in home aquaria in the sources reviewed here, and its reproductive biology in the wild is not well recorded either. Unlike the armoured callichthyid catfishes (Corydoras relatives such as Hoplosternum and Megalechis), which build floating bubble nests and are routinely spawned at home, doradids like this species are not known to be a home-breeding project — virtually all specimens in the trade are wild-collected. Aquarists should not expect to replicate a spawn without genuinely novel information, and any claim of captive breeding for this species should be treated cautiously absent solid documentation.
In the aquarium
Plan for the real adult size of around 6 in total length — modest for a doradid but still a fish that needs a proper footprint, not a nano tank, plus soft sand or fine gravel that will not abrade its barbels and a good scatter of driftwood, rockwork or purpose-built caves to wedge into during the day. It is peaceful toward tankmates too large to swallow and makes an excellent, non-aggressive community catfish, though like most catfish it will take very small fish or fry given the chance.
Two handling points follow directly from its anatomy. First, the skin is scaleless and armoured rather than scaled, which makes the species more sensitive than scaled fish to copper-based medications and some other treatments — dose conservatively and monitor closely. Second, the dorsal and pectoral spines lock rigid and are seriously prone to tangling in aquarium nets, and can jab an unwary hand; move this fish in a container rather than netting it, and avoid siting it right against a heater, since a wedged fish risks burns. It is genuinely nocturnal, so feed after dark and expect it to be a shy, retiring presence by day that becomes active once the lights go off — and if disturbed or lifted from the water it may produce its namesake grating "talking" sound by rasping the pectoral spine against its shoulder girdle.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assesses Platydoras hancockii as Least Concern, reflecting its wide distribution across the Amazon and Orinoco basins and the absence of known major threats at the species level. As with many broadly distributed South American catfishes, this status is not a guarantee against habitat pressure — Amazonian and Orinoco waterways face ongoing deforestation, damming and pollution pressures — but nothing in current assessments suggests population decline for this particular species.
