Platydoras costatus, the striped talking catfish, is one of the most recognisable members of Doradidae — the thorny catfishes of South America — armoured in a series of bony scutes along the lateral line and boldly patterned in dark brown with a contrasting cream-white stripe. It inhabits the soft-water rivers of the Amazon and Orinoco basins, reaching around 8–9 in as a standard length and up to 10 in total length: a solidly built, fully nocturnal omnivore that spends its days wedged into a cave or driftwood hollow and forages the bottom after dark. Its locking pectoral spines produce an audible grinding sound when the fish feels threatened — the origin of the 'talking' name — and those same spines tangle dangerously in nets, so this fish must be moved in a container.

Taxonomy & naming

Platydoras costatus was first described by Carl Linnaeus in 1758 under the name Silurus costatus, from material thought to originate in South America; the species has since been moved through several genera before settling in Platydoras. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, California Academy of Sciences) treats Platydoras costatus (Linnaeus, 1758) as the valid combination. The family Doradidae — the thorny or talking catfishes — is placed within Siluriformes and is entirely South American.

The genus Platydoras is a small doradid genus; costatus means 'ribbed' or 'having ribs', a reference to the row of bony lateral scutes (thorns) that run along each flank of this and related doradids. The common names 'talking catfish' and 'striped talking catfish' derive from the audible clicking or grunting the fish produces by grinding the pectoral spine against its pectoral girdle, a mechanism shared across Doradidae. 'Raphael catfish' is also widely applied in the trade to this and the similar Orinocodoras eigenmanni.

Morphology

P. costatus has the heavy, broad-headed build typical of doradids. The back and flanks are armoured with a lateral series of large, thorn-tipped bony scutes that run from behind the head to the tail base — the defining character of the thorny catfishes. The dorsal surface is dark brown to black; a bold cream or yellow-white lateral stripe runs from the snout along each side to the caudal fin, and the belly is pale tan to white. The fins are dark with lighter edges.

Unlike scaled fish, doradids carry no true scales; the body covering is a combination of thick, rough skin and the bony scute series. This matters for medication: the absence of scales makes the species more sensitive to copper-based treatments and many standard fish medications. Maximum reported size is around 8–9 in standard length and up to 10 in total length. Three pairs of barbels are present — one long maxillary pair and two shorter, branched mandibular pairs. The stiff, serrated pectoral and dorsal spines lock erect when the fish is stressed; attempting to free a tangled individual by pulling can injure both the fish and the handler.

Habitat

This species is native to the Amazon and Orinoco river basins of South America, with the type locality recorded as the Rio Solimões (upper Amazon), Brazil. It inhabits lowland freshwater rivers and streams, favouring soft to neutral water — pH 6.0–7.5 and temperatures of 72–81 °F — consistent with the warm, tannin-stained to moderately clear riverine systems it shares with other Amazonian and Orinocan catfishes.

During the day P. costatus seeks dense cover: submerged root masses, hollow logs, undercut banks or rocky crevices. It is thoroughly benthic, spending virtually all its active time on or very near the substrate. It does not require blackwater conditions but tolerates them well, and it does not require strongly acidic water; the main requirement is warmth, soft to moderately hard water, and adequate hiding structure.

Feeding

Platydoras costatus is a nocturnal benthic omnivore. In the wild it forages the bottom after dark, picking up invertebrates — insect larvae, worms, crustaceans, small molluscs — along with detritus and whatever organic matter the riverbed offers. It is not a specialist predator and does not actively hunt open-water prey, though very small fish in its immediate vicinity may be taken.

In the aquarium it accepts sinking pellets, tablet foods, frozen bloodworms, brine shrimp and other prepared omnivore foods readily. Because it is strictly nocturnal, it is best fed after the lights go out: a fish kept in a community with active daytime species may go without food for extended periods if everything is consumed before it emerges. Variety in the diet — protein-rich items alongside a good-quality sinking pellet — keeps it in good condition.

Mating

Little is documented about the mating behaviour of Platydoras costatus in either the wild or in aquaria. The species belongs to Doradidae, a family in which reproductive behaviour is not well characterised for most members and in which aquarium breeding is rare. The talking catfish is not known to form lasting pair bonds or to display obvious courtship behaviour under aquarium conditions.

Sexual dimorphism is not pronounced in this species; mature females may be fuller-bodied than males when in spawning condition, but there is no reliable external character for routine sexing. A group rather than a pair is the practical approach if attempting any breeding work, but success data in aquaria are sparse.

Breeding

Platydoras costatus is not reliably bred in aquaria. Based on general Doradidae family biology, the species is presumed to be a cavity spawner: the few doradid breeding observations on record involve pairs seeking a sheltered site and the male guarding the egg mass, but confirmed captive breeding accounts for P. costatus specifically are absent from the available record. It is not a bubble-nest builder and it does not practice brood parasitism.

Much of the aquarium trade supply comes from wild-caught fish or from farm-raised animals produced under conditions not replicated by the hobbyist. Hobbyists who wish to attempt breeding should provide multiple large caves or hollow logs, keep water soft and slightly acidic, and condition the fish well on varied foods — but should not expect reliable spawning or easy verification of success. The dearth of home-breeding data is typical for larger, nocturnal, benthic catfishes in this family.

In the aquarium

Platydoras costatus grows to 8–9 in standard length — this is not a fish that stays small, and the size trap is the most common husbandry mistake. A single adult requires a tank of at least 40 US gal; a species tank or a large mixed Amazonian community is appropriate. Water should be kept at 72–81 °F, pH 6.0–7.5 and soft to moderately hard; this is a classic South American community temperature and chemistry range.

Two care points follow directly from the fish's biology. First, the absence of scales makes it medication-sensitive: copper-based treatments and many broad-spectrum fish medications must be used at reduced doses or avoided. Treat the whole tank cautiously and research catfish-safe alternatives whenever disease arises. Second, the locking, serrated pectoral and dorsal spines tangle instantly in a net and can puncture skin; always move this fish in a plastic container or bag, never with a net. The fish is peaceful toward tankmates too large to be swallowed but will take very small fish or shrimp.

This is an intensely nocturnal species that hides completely during daylight hours. Dense cover is not optional — provide PVC tubes, hollow logs, stacked slate or cave ornaments from the start. Feed sinking foods after lights-out. Given the right setup it is a hardy, long-lived fish; the audible grinding calls it produces when disturbed are one of its most distinctive features and a reliable sign that it is active and healthy.

Conservation

Platydoras costatus has not been formally assessed by the IUCN Red List and carries a status of Not Evaluated. The species is widespread across the Amazon and Orinoco drainages — two of the largest and most hydrologically intact river systems in the world — and it is generally considered common throughout its range. No targeted conservation concern has been raised for this species.

The aquarium trade draws on both wild-collected and farm-raised animals. The species is common enough in the hobby that collection pressure is not thought to be a significant threat, but like most wild-caught Amazonian fish it enters commerce through the ornamental fishery rather than captive breeding at scale. Long-term threats to Amazonian freshwater biodiversity — deforestation-driven sedimentation, hydroelectric impoundment and climate effects on river seasonality — are the relevant background concerns for the full suite of species in these river systems.
