Taxonomy & naming
Bunocephalus aleuropsis was described by the American ichthyologist Edward Drinker Cope in 1870 from specimens collected in Peru. It belongs to the family Aspredinidae, the banjo catfishes, and to the genus Bunocephalus, one of several genera that resulted from a modern phylogenetic split of the family.
The species was for a time placed in the now-obsolete genus Dysichthys, appearing in older literature as Dysichthys aleuropsis; Dysichthys Cope, 1874 is a junior subjective synonym of Bunocephalus Kner, 1855, and a later revision of the family reassigned its species among Bunocephalus, Pseudobunocephalus and Pterobunocephalus. The Catalog of Fishes treats Bunocephalus aleuropsis as the valid combination. Aquarium suppliers sometimes group it with the similar B. coracoideus and B. colombianus, from which it is distinguished by its notably shorter coracoid processes and a comparatively narrow mouth opening.
Morphology
Like other banjo catfishes, Bunocephalus aleuropsis has a broad, dorsoventrally flattened head and forebody tapering to a long, slender, whip-like tail — the shape that gives the family its name, resembling the head and neck of a banjo. The skin is entirely scaleless (naked), covered instead in tubercles and a mottled brown-and-cream pattern that mimics dead leaves and sand.
FishBase records a maximum size of 3.5 in standard length for wild specimens, though imported aquarium fish are sometimes seen at 4–6 in in length. As a scaleless catfish it is more sensitive than scaled species to copper and to many medications, a point worth remembering before treating a tank that holds one. It is also a facultative air-breather, able to gulp atmospheric air when dissolved oxygen runs low.
Habitat
Bunocephalus aleuropsis is distributed through the Amazon basin and apparently into the Orinoco basin of South America, inhabiting slow, shaded stretches of river and stream with sand, clay or bedrock bottoms, often below riffles and among accumulations of leaf litter. It is a freshwater, demersal species of tropical lowland waters.
Its flattened shape and cryptic colouring let it lie motionless on the substrate, effectively invisible among sunken leaves and debris — a strategy that depends on soft sediment and leaf litter being present rather than swept clean. The species has not been reported from brackish water.
Feeding
This is a nocturnal, benthic omnivore. FishBase records a diet of insect matter and plant material taken from the substrate, consistent with the family's habit of foraging over the bottom after dark for small invertebrates and organic debris rather than actively hunting by sight.
In the aquarium it accepts sinking pellets, frozen foods such as bloodworm, and other prepared foods, but because it feeds mainly at night it does best when food is offered after the lights go out, so it is not out-competed by more active, sighted tankmates during the day.
Mating
Specific courtship and spawning behaviour for Bunocephalus aleuropsis has not been documented. Within the banjo catfish family, some Aspredinidae — notably in the related genus Bunocephalus and its close relatives — are known for an unusual reproductive strategy in which the female carries fertilised eggs attached to the skin of her belly, on small fleshy stalks (cotylephores), until they hatch. Whether this species follows that pattern specifically has not been confirmed in the sources consulted here, and general banjo catfish accounts note that spawning, where observed at all in the family, tends to happen directly onto the substrate at night with no courtship display recorded.
Breeding
Breeding of Bunocephalus aleuropsis in the aquarium is essentially undocumented, and it should not be assumed to spawn like an open-water egg-scatterer. The wider banjo catfish family shows at least two very different modes — egg-carrying on the female's belly skin in some species, and unattended nocturnal egg-laying on the substrate (with adults sometimes consuming their own spawn) reported for aquarium relatives such as B. coracoideus — and no reliable, repeatable captive-breeding account exists for this species specifically.
Given the lack of data, keepers should treat any breeding attempt as experimental. There is no evidence of parental care of eggs or fry by the male in this genus, and even close relatives are only very rarely reported to spawn in home aquaria.
In the aquarium
Bunocephalus aleuropsis is a peaceful, undemanding bottom-dweller once its two essential needs are met: a soft sand or fine gravel substrate it can bury into, and a diet delivered after dark. Aquarium imports are sometimes seen at 4–6 in, noticeably larger than the 3.5 in SL maximum reported for wild fish, so plan tank size around the larger figure rather than assuming it stays small — the size trap that catches keepers of many catfish. Leaf litter and other cover reinforce its natural camouflage and encourage more natural behaviour than a bare tank.
Being scaleless, it is sensitive to copper-based and some other medications; dose conservatively and treat with caution, as with loaches, puffers and other naked-skinned catfish. It is not aggressive and mixes well with peaceful community fish too large to be eaten, though very small fish or fry may be at risk. Because it is a facultative air-breather, avoid trapping it under a tight-fitting cover with no access to the surface. It has no dangerous spines in the way many other catfish do, but as with any Siluriform it is still best handled in a container rather than by hand.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assesses Bunocephalus aleuropsis as Least Concern, reflecting its wide distribution across the Amazon and apparently the Orinoco basin, where it is not known to face significant range-wide threats.
As with many small, cryptic Amazonian fish, there is limited targeted monitoring, and local pressures — deforestation, sedimentation and pollution affecting the leaf-litter and sand habitats it depends on — are the main long-term concerns for its river systems even though the species as a whole is not currently considered at risk.
