Taxonomy & naming
Pseudoplatystoma reticulatum was formally described by Carl H. Eigenmann and Rosa Smith Eigenmann in 1889. It belongs to the family Pimelodidae, the long-whiskered catfishes — a large Neotropical family whose members range from small, secretive river-bottom species to the giant sorubims and pirarara of the main Amazon channel. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, California Academy of Sciences) treats Pseudoplatystoma reticulatum as the valid combination.
The genus Pseudoplatystoma contains several large predatory sorubims, including the widely known tiger shovelnose catfish P. tigrinum and the barred sorubim P. fasciatum; all are ecological analogues occupying large-river predator niches across tropical and subtropical South America. The genus name combines the Greek pseudo- (false) with platys (flat) and stoma (mouth), alluding to the characteristically broad, flattened head and wide gape of these fishes. The species epithet reticulatum is Latin for 'netted' or 'net-like', referring to the reticulated pattern of dark lines and blotches on a paler body ground colour that distinguishes this species from its more striped or spotted congeners.
The genus has historically attracted confused synonymy and its species limits have been revised multiple times; material from the Paraná and Amazon drainages was sometimes pooled under P. fasciatum before contemporary molecular and morphological work separated the component species. Aquarium imports are not always correctly labelled, so the reticulated pattern is the most reliable field mark for P. reticulatum.
Morphology
Pseudoplatystoma reticulatum shares the characteristic sorubim build: a strongly depressed, broad head with a wide, subterminal mouth, a body that is deep and somewhat laterally compressed behind the pectoral girdle, and three pairs of barbels — long, streamer-like maxillary barbels that extend well past the body in juveniles and two shorter pairs of mandibular barbels beneath the jaw. The dorsal profile rises steeply behind the head to the tall, falcate dorsal fin, and the tail is deeply forked. The body is covered in small, faint, reticulated markings — a network of darker pigment over a pale grey or cream ground — rather than the bold vertical bars of P. tigrinum.
FishBase records the maximum standard length (SL) as 24 in for males and unsexed specimens, and larger individuals are reported in the literature from the wild. Standard length does not include the tail, so total length in large adults is somewhat greater. Juveniles sold in the trade are typically 2–6 in and already show the elongate sorubim shape and long barbels that signal what the fish will become.
The skin is entirely scaleless — naked and smooth — a trait shared by all Pimelodidae and with practical implications for medication (see 'In the aquarium'). The first ray of both the pectoral fins and the dorsal fin is a stout, serrated spine that locks erect and can easily tangle in a net; the serrations can inflict a serious wound. The spine is not venomous in the way that some bagrid or plotosid spines are, but it is rigid, sharp, and capable of cutting hands or piercing skin when a fish is handled carelessly.
Habitat
Pseudoplatystoma reticulatum is native to the central Amazon and the Paraná River basin, with distribution records from Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Paraguay, and Uruguay. It is a large-river species, inhabiting the main channels, major tributaries and associated floodplain systems of these subtropical and tropical drainages. The Paraná component of its range extends into the subtropical south, giving it a slightly wider thermal tolerance than strictly tropical Amazonian catfishes.
As a demersal species it spends most of its time near the bottom in open channel and floodplain habitats, often in deeper water during the dry season and moving into flooded forest margins and lateral lakes during high water. The water chemistry across its range is broadly soft to moderately hard and near-neutral to slightly acidic in the Amazon headwaters, trending toward higher conductivity in parts of the Paraná system. Water temperatures in its native rivers range roughly 72–82 °F depending on season and latitude; Paraná populations experience cooler winters than their Amazonian counterparts. iNaturalist confirms distribution records across both the central Amazon and Paraná basin.
Feeding
Pseudoplatystoma reticulatum is a dedicated piscivore — a nocturnal ambush predator that uses its broad, flattened head and wide gape to engulf prey fish whole. In the wild it feeds primarily on other fish, hunting over the bottom and in open water after dark, using its long barbels to detect prey by vibration and chemosensory signals in turbid, low-visibility river water. Invertebrates and crustaceans may supplement the diet, particularly for smaller individuals.
In the aquarium it must be fed accordingly: large meaty foods are required, including whole or cut fish (silversides, lance fish, earthworms), large prawns, mussels, and high-protein sinking pellets sized for large predatory catfish. It is likely to refuse dried foods initially and may need to be transitioned from live or fresh prey to prepared items. The critical point for tank management is that any fish or invertebrate small enough to fit in its mouth is considered food — tankmates must be demonstrably too large to swallow, which in a fish approaching 23.5 in SL means very large companions indeed. Feeding at dusk or after lights-out ensures the nocturnal fish competes effectively.
Mating
Pseudoplatystoma reticulatum is a migratory breeder, and reproduction is tied to the seasonal flood pulse of its native river systems. The ResearchGate early-development study confirms that spawning occurs during the high-water season, typically October to December, when rising water temperatures and water-level cues trigger upriver spawning migrations. Adults move from their dry-season holding areas to upstream spawning grounds; juveniles subsequently develop in floodplain nursery areas as waters recede.
Sexual dimorphism is present. Adults show some body-form differences between the sexes, reportedly with females becoming distinctly fuller in the abdomen when ripe, but the differences are subtle and identification of sex in non-ripe adults is difficult. Like other large pimelodids, the trigger for final maturation and spawning is the environmental cue of the flood pulse — sustained rises in water level and temperature — rather than pair-bonding or nest preparation. Captive fish in standard aquarium conditions do not encounter these cues and pairing in typical hobby aquaria does not occur.
Breeding
Pseudoplatystoma reticulatum is not bred in the home aquarium. It is, however, commercially important: in South America it is a significant fishery and aquaculture species, and captive reproduction is achieved at fish farms using hormonal induction — injections of pituitary extract or synthetic GnRH analogues that override the absence of natural environmental cues and bring fish into spawning condition. Eggs are stripped, fertilised and hatched artificially; larvae are reared in controlled conditions.
For the aquarist this means there is no home-breeding pathway. The fish grows far too large for standard aquarium volumes to sustain a healthy adult pair, and the environmental conditions required to trigger natural spawning — a sustained dry-season interval followed by a flood-season rise in water temperature and level across several months — cannot be replicated in a tank. Aquarium-trade juveniles are either farm-raised through hormonal methods or wild-collected; origin is rarely declared on specimens in the trade. In the aquarium
Keeping Pseudoplatystoma reticulatum honestly means keeping a fish that will exceed 23.5 in SL at maturity and requires a tank in the range of 1,0.5 US gal or more to be maintained without chronic stress — and even that is a stretch for an active, large-bodied predator of open rivers. This is not a fish for domestic aquaria in the long term; public aquariums, specialist facilities, or very large pond installations are the appropriate destination for an adult. The size trap is real: juveniles of 3–4.5 in are routinely sold and are genuinely striking, but the buyer must plan for the full adult well in advance.
Because the skin is entirely scaleless, Pseudoplatystoma reticulatum is sensitive to copper-based treatments and many proprietary medications in the same way as loaches, puffers, and other naked-skinned fishes — if medication is required, begin at half the labelled dose and monitor carefully, increasing only if necessary. Never net this fish: the locking, serrated pectoral spines catch fabric instantly and the fish thrashes violently, injuring itself and potentially the keeper. Use a smooth-walled container to transfer it.
Water conditions should reflect the broad river habitat: a temperature in the range of 72–82 °F, pH 6.0–8.0, and moderate hardness. Strong mechanical filtration is non-negotiable given the bioload of a large piscivore; water quality must be excellent. Provide subdued lighting, a large open swimming area, and some cover in the form of large driftwood or overhangs, particularly while the fish is acclimating. Tankmates must be fish of comparable or greater size — anything smaller will be consumed. Given its scale and feeding requirements, this species is best suited to experienced keepers who can genuinely accommodate an adult.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assessed Pseudoplatystoma reticulatum as Least Concern in an assessment dated 21 December 2020. The species is broadly distributed across the Amazon and Paraná basins and is described as having medium resilience, with a minimum population doubling time of 1.4–4.4 years. It is not currently considered threatened at the population level.
However, as a commercially fished and aquacultured species, P. reticulatum faces the pressures common to large predatory fish in heavily exploited South American river systems: overfishing, habitat modification through dam construction, floodplain conversion for agriculture, and water-quality decline. Its migratory breeding habit means it depends on connectivity along river corridors, which dam construction directly interrupts. Commercial aquaculture of the species, while reducing demand on wild stocks for food markets, does not remove the impact of habitat degradation on wild populations. The IUCN notes the species is of commercial and aquaculture importance regionally.
