Taxonomy & naming
Pterodoras granulosus was originally described as Doras granulosus by Achille Valenciennes in 1821. It was subsequently transferred to the genus Pterodoras, which the Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, California Academy of Sciences) treats as the valid placement. The family Doradidae — the thorny catfishes or talking catfishes — is a South American family characterised by a row of bony, often thorn-bearing lateral scutes running the length of the body, and by the ability to produce sound by compressing the swim bladder with specialised muscles, giving the family its common name.
The specific epithet granulosus is Latin for 'granulated' or 'grainy', describing the nodular, granular texture of the bony scutes covering the body — a texture that distinguishes this species within the genus. The type specimen is held in Paris and the type locality is in the Amazon drainage. No junior synonyms are currently recognised for this species.
Morphology
Pterodoras granulosus has the classic doradid build: a broad, depressed head, a stout, tapering body, and three pairs of barbels (one long maxillary pair and two shorter mandibular pairs used to probe sediment). The body is covered not in scales but in a series of bony lateral scutes that interlock along the flank; these scutes carry the granular nodules that give the species its name and provide meaningful physical protection. The dorsal and pectoral fins are each preceded by a stiff, serrated spine that can lock in the erect position via an odontoid process — a mechanism that prevents the spine from folding under lateral pressure.
Adult length is typically 15.5–19.5 in standard length (SL), with some individuals reported approaching 21.5 in. The body is generally grey to brown above and paler below, without bold markings. The tail is forked. This is not a venomous species — the spines lack true venom glands — but the serrated locking spines cause serious lacerations and tangle immediately in a net, so the fish must always be moved in a solid container.
As with all catfish, the skin is scaleless despite the bony scuting. The scutes protect the flanks but leave the belly and undersurfaces exposed, and medications and water-borne chemicals are absorbed more readily than in a scaled fish.
Habitat
Pterodoras granulosus is native to the Amazon and Orinoco river basins of South America — one of the most extensive freshwater systems on Earth. It occupies slow-moving rivers, flooded forest margins, and backwater channels where the current is gentle and the substrate is soft sediment, leaf litter, and detritus. It is strongly associated with areas of dense aquatic vegetation and submerged wood where it can shelter through the day.
The water in these systems is warm and typically soft to moderately hard, with temperatures around 75–82 °F and pH values in the range 6.0–7.5. This is a tropical lowland river fish, not a rift-lake or temperate species — it expects warm, slightly soft, near-neutral conditions and does not tolerate cold or strongly alkaline water. As a large-bodied fish it produces considerable biological waste and requires excellent filtration and regular water maintenance.
Feeding
Pterodoras granulosus is a large nocturnal predator. In its native rivers it forages after dark over soft substrates, using its sensitive barbels to locate prey. Its diet includes fish, large aquatic invertebrates, crustaceans, and other meaty items; as a doradid it likely also ingests some plant material and detritus incidentally. Any animal that fits in its substantial mouth is at risk.
In captivity it accepts large sinking pellets, whole prawns, fish pieces, krill, and other meaty prepared foods. Feeding should be timed to coincide with the lights-out period when the fish is naturally active. The critical care point is that its diet history as a predator means tankmates must be large enough that they cannot be swallowed — fish that are half or more the catfish's own body length are the minimum practical companions.
Mating
Detailed records of courtship and mating behaviour in Pterodoras granulosus are not available in the literature consulted. Like most large doradids, this species is believed to spawn in open or sheltered areas of the river during the flood season, when rising water levels and increased food supply trigger reproductive activity in many Amazonian fishes. No aquarium observations of mating behaviour in this species have been documented.
Sexual dimorphism has not been well characterised in this species. As in other large doradids, ripe females may be distinguishable by a fuller abdomen, but reliable external sexing criteria have not been established from available sources.
Breeding
There are no confirmed breeding records for Pterodoras granulosus in home aquaria, and the species is not commercially bred through home hobbyist means. Any aquarium trade stock consists of wild-collected juveniles or specimens bred at commercial fish farms using hormone-assisted spawning techniques, which is the standard approach for large Amazonian catfishes whose natural spawning is triggered by seasonal flood-pulse cues that are difficult to replicate in captivity.
Keepers should not expect to breed this species in a home aquarium setting. The adult size alone — 15.5–19.5 in SL — means that the minimum holding space for a single pair would be impractical for most private facilities. Breeding mode in nature is presumed to involve egg deposition without extended parental care, consistent with many large doradids, but this has not been confirmed from direct observation for this species.
In the aquarium
Pterodoras granulosus is one of the most commonly purchased and inappropriately kept large catfishes in the hobby. Juveniles are frequently sold at 1 in in general fish shops alongside community fish, without clear labelling of adult size. At 15.5–19.5 in SL the adult fish requires a tank of at least 750–1,0.5 US gal as a minimum for a single specimen, with powerful filtration to handle its biological load. This is a fish for public aquaria, large zoo facilities, or dedicated pond-keepers with indoor tropical ponds — not a 200-litre community aquarium.
Care requirements beyond space: the water must be warm (75–82 °F) and kept near neutral (pH 6.0–7.5); soft to moderately hard. The tank should have substantial areas of dim cover — large pieces of driftwood, overturned ceramic pipes, or constructed caves — as this species is strictly nocturnal and will hide throughout the day. It is solitary and territorial toward conspecifics.
Tankmates must be large enough that they cannot be swallowed; any fish under roughly half the catfish's own body length is at predation risk. Despite its armoured appearance, the skin is scaleless and medication-sensitive — copper-based treatments and other chemicals should be dosed at the conservative low end of any recommended range. Critically, this fish must never be moved with a net: the locking pectoral and dorsal spines tangle instantly in mesh and the serrated edges cause serious injury to both fish and keeper. Always use a solid, smooth-sided container to move or catch the fish.
Conservation
Pterodoras granulosus has not been formally assessed by the IUCN Red List and carries a status of Not Evaluated (NE). As a widespread species distributed across the Amazon and Orinoco basins — two of the largest and most intact river systems remaining in the tropics — it is not currently considered to face acute conservation pressure, though no formal population assessment has been conducted.
Habitat loss from deforestation, dam construction, sedimentation, and mercury pollution from artisanal gold mining are ongoing pressures across Amazonian river systems that affect many large-bodied catfish. The aquarium trade relies on wild-collected juveniles; the scale of this collection relative to wild population size has not been formally evaluated for this species. Large-bodied doradids in general are also harvested for local food use in parts of the Amazon basin.
