Rhamdia quelen is a large, wide-ranging heptapterid catfish native to the major river basins of South America — the Amazon, Paraná–Paraguay system and coastal drainages of Brazil — where it forages the bottom at night for invertebrates, small fish and organic debris. Growing to 25.5 in standard length, it is among the biggest heptapterids an aquarist might encounter, and the size trap is its defining care problem: fish sold as small juveniles routinely outgrow everything but the largest home aquaria. Scaleless and med-sensitive, equipped with stiff locking pectoral spines that can jab the unwary keeper, it is a fish that rewards experience rather than impulse.

Taxonomy & naming

Rhamdia quelen was originally described by Jean René Constant Quoy and Joseph Paul Gaimard in 1824 from the vicinity of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The species has an extensive synonymy — older literature placed it under various genera including Pimelodus, reflecting the tangled history of long-whiskered catfish classification before the family Heptapteridae was formally defined. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) treats Rhamdia quelen as the valid name and Heptapteridae as the valid family. The genus Rhamdia holds a handful of closely related species across Central and South America.

The genus name Rhamdia is a Latinised form with uncertain precise etymology but traditionally applied to this New World catfish group. The species epithet quelen traces to an indigenous South American name for the fish. The species has been called the South American catfish or jandia catfish in the trade, though these vernaculars are applied inconsistently across the genus. Heptapteridae as a whole was formerly lumped with the huge family Pimelodidae, and older references may still use that placement.

Morphology

Rhamdia quelen has the characteristic heptapterid build: a flattened, broad head, a robust streamlined body tapering to a forked caudal fin, and three pairs of barbels — one long maxillary pair that extends well past the head in adults, and two shorter pairs on the lower jaw. The dorsal fin is short and armed with a stiff, serrated, locking spine; the pectoral fins similarly each carry a locking serrated spine capable of drawing blood if handled carelessly. The skin is entirely naked — scaleless and smooth, with no bony plates.

Coloration is typically grey-brown to olive above, paler on the belly, sometimes with a faint lateral stripe or scattered melanophores giving a dusky appearance. Maximum documented size reaches 25.5 in standard length (FishBase), making this one of the larger South American catfish available in the hobby. Most aquarium individuals are encountered as small juveniles, which makes the size trap especially acute: there is no compact adult form.

Habitat

This species occurs across a broad range of South American freshwater systems, including the Amazon and associated drainages, the Paraná–Paraguay basin, and coastal rivers of eastern Brazil including the type locality near Rio de Janeiro. It inhabits rivers and streams of varying size, typically keeping to the benthos — the bottom substrate of sandy or silty river floors and among submerged wood or roots.

Water conditions across this range are broadly warm and neutral to slightly acidic: FishBase records temperatures of 72–82 °F and a pH of roughly 6.5–7.5. These are not extreme blackwater conditions; Rhamdia quelen occupies productive river habitats with moderate organic load. It is primarily a lowland species tolerating some turbidity, and it shows the broad ecological tolerance characteristic of widespread generalists.

Feeding

Rhamdia quelen is a nocturnal benthic omnivore and micro-predator. In the wild it forages the bottom after dark for aquatic invertebrates, detritus, small fish and whatever organic material is available. The long maxillary barbels are chemosensory tools, sweeping the substrate in darkness to locate prey.

In the aquarium it readily accepts sinking catfish pellets, frozen bloodworm, brine shrimp and other prepared foods presented on or near the bottom. Larger adults will take small fish given the opportunity, so tank-mate choice matters. Because this species is nocturnal, it is best fed after lights-out; in a competitive community it may go unfed if food disappears before it begins foraging.

Mating

Rhamdia quelen has not been bred routinely in aquaria, and detailed accounts of captive mating behaviour are sparse. In its native range it is a commercially important food fish, and some aquaculture work exists, but home-aquarium spawning is not a realistic prospect given the size required to hold sexually mature adults.

In aquaculture contexts, mature individuals are large, and spawning is typically hormone-induced as is standard for large South American catfish. Wild-caught adults presumably seek suitable sheltered substrate — stones, root tangles or undercuts — for spawning, but the specifics of wild courtship and mate selection in this genus are not well documented in accessible literature.

Breeding

Breeding Rhamdia quelen in a home aquarium is not a realistic goal. The fish must reach substantial adult size before it is sexually mature, requiring a very large tank, and the commercial production that supplies any aquaculture demand relies on hormone induction rather than natural aquarium spawning. There are no reliable reports of home-aquarist breeding successes.

The species is not in the same category as small armoured catfishes (callichthyids) that breed readily in standard aquaria; it is better placed alongside the large pimelodids and pangasiids where commercial farming, not hobbyist breeding, accounts for any captive supply. Keepers should expect that eggs and fry will not be forthcoming in a home setting.

In the aquarium

The first and most important fact about keeping Rhamdia quelen is the adult size: 25.5 in standard length. Juveniles are readily available and attractively priced, but they grow into fish that require a very large aquarium — at a minimum several hundred litres, and more if the fish is to thrive rather than merely survive. The size trap is the single biggest welfare problem with this species; buyers must plan for the adult, not the juvenile.

As a scaleless catfish, Rhamdia quelen is more sensitive than scaled fish to copper-based medications and to many standard aquarium treatments. Doses should be halved from the manufacturer's recommendation and the fish monitored closely; when in doubt, use copper-free treatments. The stiff, serrated, locking pectoral spines tangle irretrievably in a net and can inflict a painful jab — always move this fish in a container, never a net.

Beyond size and handling, care requirements are moderate. Water of 72–82 °F and pH 6.5–7.5 suits the species, and robust filtration that handles the waste output of a large predatory fish is essential. Provide a cave or substantial shelter (a large piece of bogwood, PVC pipe or ceramic tube) because the fish is strongly nocturnal and will hide during the day. Tankmates should be robust species too large to be eaten; small fish will be consumed after lights-out. Feed sinking foods in the evening.

Conservation

Rhamdia quelen has not been formally assessed by the IUCN Red List and carries a status of Not Evaluated (NE). Its wide distribution across multiple major South American river systems, broad ecological tolerance and status as a commercially fished and farmed species in parts of its range suggest it is not acutely threatened at present, but no formal assessment exists.

The species faces the general pressures affecting South American river fish: dam construction fragmenting river systems, water quality degradation from agricultural runoff and urban pollution, and localised overfishing in areas where it is a food fish. Because it is not assessed, regional population trends are not formally tracked. The aquarium trade draws largely on wild-caught juveniles, which is a further consideration for a species that takes some years to reach reproductive maturity.
