Synodontis flavitaeniatus, the orangestriped squeaker, is a medium-sized mochokid catfish endemic to the Congo Basin of central Africa. Reaching close to 8 in in the wild, it is admired in the aquarium trade for its warm, ochre-and-dark banded or striped patterning — unusual in a genus more often associated with spots — and it carries the full Synodontis toolkit: locking serrated spines, a scaleless skin that demands careful medication, and a strongly nocturnal lifestyle that rewards keepers who observe their tank after the lights go down.

Taxonomy & naming

Synodontis flavitaeniatus was described by the prolific Belgian-British ichthyologist George Albert Boulenger in 1919, from material collected in the Congo Basin. It belongs to the family Mochokidae — the African squeakers and upside-down catfishes — and to the large genus Synodontis, which encompasses well over 100 valid species distributed across tropical and subtropical Africa. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) treats Synodontis flavitaeniatus as the valid name with no synonyms in common use.

The species epithet flavitaeniatus is Latin: flavus (yellow, golden) combined with taeniatus (banded, striped), together meaning roughly 'yellow-banded' or 'golden-striped' — a direct reference to the warm, yellowish lateral banding that distinguishes this species from the majority of spotted or blotched congeners. In the trade it most often appears under the English names orangestriped squeaker or orange-striped catfish, which echo the same feature.

Morphology

In body plan, Synodontis flavitaeniatus is a typical squeaker: a broad, slightly flattened head, a robust, tapering body, three pairs of barbels (one long maxillary pair arising from the upper jaw and two shorter, pinnate mandibular pairs below), a tall anterior dorsal fin, and a forked caudal fin. The distinctive feature is the colour pattern — a warm tan to ochre ground overlaid with darker bands or stripes running along the flanks, giving the fish its common name.

Maximum recorded total length is 7.5 in (FishBase), though PlanetCatfish notes that wild specimens can approach 8 in while aquarium-kept individuals typically settle closer to 5–6 in. As with all Synodontis, the leading rays of both the dorsal and the pectoral fins are stiffened and serrated, and can be locked erect by a unique mechanism in the pectoral girdle. These spines produce the audible rasping squeak that names the whole group. The skin is entirely scaleless — smooth and naked — which has direct implications for medication (see below).

Habitat

Synodontis flavitaeniatus is a Congo Basin endemic. FishBase records its native range as the middle Congo River, Pool Malebo (the broad lake-like expansion of the Congo formerly called Stanley Pool), and the Ubangi, Kasai, and Maiko-Loboya drainages. All of these are within the vast Central African lowland Congo system, which is characterised by warm, soft-to-moderately mineralised freshwater.

In this system the water is typically warm (73–82 °F per FishBase) and mildly acidic to neutral (pH 6.5–8.0), and the substrate ranges from sandy-muddy floodplain margins to rockier riverine sections. Like other Synodontis, this species is benthopelagic — it lives and forages near the bottom, seeking cover in crevices, root tangles, and undercut banks during the day and moving out to forage after dark.

Feeding

Synodontis flavitaeniatus is an omnivore with a pronounced benthos bias. In the wild it takes aquatic insect larvae, small crustaceans, plant material, and organic debris from the bottom, foraging primarily after dark. This broad diet is typical of the genus and makes the species very adaptable in captivity.

In the aquarium, high-quality sinking pellets form a good dietary base; frozen bloodworms, brine shrimp, and whiteworms are accepted readily and help maintain condition. Because the fish is strongly nocturnal, feeding after the main tank lights go out ensures it gets its share before diurnal tankmates clear the substrate. It does not need live food, though it relishes it.

Mating

Synodontis flavitaeniatus is not the cuckoo catfish: unlike the famous S. multipunctatus, this species does not practise brood parasitism. In the wild it spawns as an egg-scatterer, releasing adhesive eggs over the substrate — most likely amid root tangles, leaf litter, or rocky crevices — with no documented parental care from either sex.

Determining sex externally is difficult in most Synodontis, and this species is no exception. In well-conditioned adults, females tend to be slightly fuller-bodied when carrying eggs, but there is no reliable external marker in juveniles. Wild mating is thought to follow seasonal rainfall cycles that influence water temperature and conductivity, as is common across Congo Basin catfishes.

Breeding

No reliable account of home-aquarium breeding for Synodontis flavitaeniatus exists in the available literature. Like the majority of Synodontis species it is essentially a non-breeder in captivity under normal aquarium conditions. Commercial propagation of Synodontis for the trade is typically achieved through hormonal induction at fish farms, and the aquarium supply of this species depends on that method or on wild collection from the Congo.

Keepers who wish to attempt breeding should provide a species tank with soft, warm, slightly acidic water matched to the Congo parameters, sandy substrate with caves or PVC tubes for spawning sites, and a small group rather than a single pair. Even so, successful spawning without hormonal induction is rarely documented, and hobbyists should not expect a straightforward result.

In the aquarium

Synodontis flavitaeniatus is a rewarding Congo catfish for a well-considered setup. An aquarium of at least 55 US gal is appropriate for a small group of three to six fish; the tank should have a soft, fine sand substrate to protect the barbels and a generous provision of hiding places — bogwood, smooth rocks, PVC tubes, and broad-leaved plants all work well. Water should be warm (73–82 °F), in the pH range of 6.5–8.0, and softish to moderately mineralised to reflect the middle Congo's chemistry.

Two biology points matter for care. First, the skin is scaleless, so this fish is more sensitive than a scaled species to copper-based treatments and to many proprietary medications — when treatment is necessary, half the normal dose is usually advised, and the fish should be monitored closely. Second, the locking pectoral and dorsal spines can tangle fatally in an aquarium net and can deliver a sharp jab to the keeper; always move this catfish in a smooth container rather than a net. It is generally peaceful with tankmates too large to be eaten, though it may squabble with conspecifics over preferred caves, which is another reason to provide plenty of cover. Feeding after lights-out ensures it competes well against day-active species.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List assessed Synodontis flavitaeniatus as Least Concern in February 2009, reflecting a broad distribution across the Congo Basin and no evidence of population decline sufficient to trigger a higher-risk category. The Congo River system is one of the largest river basins on Earth, and many of its fish species hold wide ranges that buffer them against localised threats.

Nonetheless, the Congo Basin faces ongoing pressures from artisanal and commercial fisheries, habitat modification from forest clearance and agricultural expansion, and in some areas the aquarium collection trade. The species is primarily traded as wild-caught fish from the Congo, so sustained collection pressure is a legitimate consideration, though it has not driven it toward a threatened status at present.
