Taxonomy & naming
Synodontis brichardi was described by the Belgian ichthyologist Max Poll in 1959. It belongs to the family Mochokidae — the African squeakers and upside-down catfishes — and to the large genus Synodontis, which holds well over a hundred valid species distributed across tropical and subtropical Africa. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, California Academy of Sciences) treats Synodontis brichardi as the valid combination; no synonyms are in wide use.
The species epithet brichardi honours Pierre Brichard, the Belgian naturalist, collector and aquarium-fish exporter who was instrumental in bringing Central African fishes to the hobby during the mid-twentieth century. The genus name Synodontis is an old term applied to these catfishes, conventionally interpreted as deriving from the Greek syn- (together) and odous (tooth), a reference to the teeth of the lower jaw. The full pronunciation is approximately sin-oh-DON-tis bri-SHAR-dee.
Morphology
Synodontis brichardi carries the classic squeaker body plan: a broad, dorsally flattened head, a sturdy torpedo-shaped body, and three pairs of barbels — one long, unbranched maxillary pair on the upper jaw and two shorter, branched mandibular pairs below. The colouration is a pale grey-brown to tan, typically with darker markings or mottling; the fins may carry darker banding. The caudal fin is deeply forked, and the dorsal and pectoral fins bear the stiff, serrated, locking spines that characterise the genus.
Maximum recorded total length is 6 in (FishBase), making it a mid-sized squeaker. As in all mochokids the skin is entirely scaleless — there is no bony armour — and this naked skin has direct implications for medication sensitivity (see 'In the aquarium'). The locking pectoral spines can be clamped rigidly erect and rasped against the pectoral girdle, producing the audible squeak that gives the family its common name.
Habitat
Synodontis brichardi is native to the Congo River system in the Democratic Republic of Congo and the Republic of Congo, with records from the lower and middle reaches of the Congo drainage. It is a rheophilic species — one that favours fast-moving water — associated with rapids, rocky runs, and the turbulent downstream pools that form below them. This is a demanding habitat: well-oxygenated, often with high current velocity and a shifting substrate of boulders, gravel, and sand.
The Congo River system spans an enormous range of water chemistry conditions, but the habitat of S. brichardi is typically moderately soft to moderate in hardness, with a pH in the range of 6.2–7.5 and temperatures of 72–79 °F (Seriously Fish). This is not a soft-water blackwater dweller of still forest pools; it belongs to the moving-water, higher-oxygen environment of the river's rapids corridor.
Feeding
Synodontis brichardi is a benthic omnivore, foraging over rocky and sandy substrates — primarily after dark — for aquatic invertebrates including insect larvae, small crustaceans, and whatever edible material the current deposits among the boulders. In common with other Synodontis it will also take some plant and algal material.
In the aquarium it accepts a wide range of sinking prepared foods: high-quality sinking pellets, wafers, and tablets form a sound dietary base, supplemented with frozen or live foods such as bloodworm, brine shrimp, and daphnia. Blanched vegetables — spinach, peas, cucumber — are also taken. Because it is largely nocturnal, feeding after lights-out ensures it is not out-competed by bolder diurnal tankmates.
Mating
Synodontis brichardi is not the cuckoo brood-parasite of the genus — that distinction belongs to S. multipunctatus of Lake Tanganyika. In the wild, S. brichardi reproduces as a conventional egg-scatterer, releasing adhesive eggs over rocky substrate with little or no prolonged parental involvement, as is typical for the majority of Synodontis species.
Details of wild courtship behaviour are not well documented in the available literature. Like most Synodontis, conditioning fish for a potential spawn requires a nutritious, varied diet and appropriate water conditions. Sexing is subtle: ripe females are fuller-bodied than males, particularly around the abdomen, but no dramatic external sexual dimorphism has been reported for this species.
Breeding
Captive breeding of Synodontis brichardi in home aquaria is rarely if ever reported in the hobby literature; available sources indicate it has been bred commercially through hormone induction in Eastern Europe, a technique that is not readily replicated at home. The species is therefore regarded as essentially unbreedable under standard home aquarium conditions.
For those wishing to attempt a breeding, the biology points toward providing optimal, well-oxygenated, moderately soft water at 72–79 °F, plentiful conditioning foods, and — by analogy with other Synodontis — perhaps a slight seasonal cue to trigger spawning. Any eggs produced would be adhesive and scattered; the parents are not expected to guard them and should be separated from the eggs to prevent predation. Given the Vulnerable status and restricted wild range, commercially hormone-bred stock rather than wild-caught fish is the more sustainable route for the hobby.
In the aquarium
Synodontis brichardi is a rewarding species for the aquarist who can provide a current-rich, well-oxygenated aquarium. The fast-moving rapids and pools of the Congo River are its natural home, so a filter system augmented by powerheads or a wave-maker that produces a strong, steady flow is the most important environmental requirement. Minimum tank size is typically cited at around 40 US gal, decorated with boulders, slate, and smooth substrate that allows the fish to rest out of the strongest current.
Two care points are non-negotiable. First, the skin is entirely scaleless, which makes S. brichardi significantly more sensitive than armoured or scaled fish to copper-based treatments and many other medications — always use half-dose or scaleless-safe formulations, and avoid copper unless specifically advised for the product. Second, the locking, serrated pectoral and dorsal spines tangle viciously in aquarium nets and can deliver a painful jab to the keeper's hand; always transfer this fish in a hard-sided container, never with a soft net.
This species is primarily nocturnal. Provide rocky caves, PVC tubes, or clay pots as daytime retreats; it will emerge as the lights dim. It is peaceful toward tankmates too large to be eaten, though it may be somewhat territorial toward conspecifics; groups of three or more can work if space is adequate. Water temperature of 72–79 °F and a pH of 6.2–7.5 match its natural range.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assessed Synodontis brichardi as Vulnerable (VU) in 2022. Its native range within the lower and middle Congo River system is geographically limited, and like many Congo basin endemics it faces pressure from artisanal and commercial fishing, habitat modification, and the broader environmental stresses on the Congo River drainage — one of Africa's most biologically significant but increasingly threatened river systems.
The species appears in the aquarium trade, and where this trade relies on wild-caught fish, collection adds to the pressures facing the wild population. Commercial hormone-breeding, used in Eastern Europe, provides a supply route that does not depend on wild capture; captive-bred stock is the more sustainable choice for hobbyists. Keepers should seek out fish from reputable captive-bred sources where available.
