Reaching up to 8 in standard length, it is an unobtrusive, nocturnal benthic forager — one of many Synodontis species that rarely makes it into specialist English aquarium literature but represents the quiet majority of the genus: a scaleless, spine-locked river dweller that picks over the substrate after dark and keeps a low profile by day.

Taxonomy & naming

Synodontis alberti was described by the Dutch zoologist Lourens Ferdinand de Beaufort's contemporary Ljo Schilthuis in 1891. It belongs to the family Mochokidae — the African squeakers and upside-down catfishes — and to the large genus Synodontis, which encompasses well over a hundred species spread across tropical Africa. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, California Academy of Sciences) treats Synodontis alberti as a valid species under the current combination.

The epithet alberti is a Latinised personal name, honouring an individual (identity not further established in the available sources) rather than describing a morphological feature. The generic name Synodontis is an old Greek-derived term applied to these catfishes, conventionally parsed as syn- (together) and odous (tooth), alluding to the characteristic comb-like lower dentition of the group. No major hobbyist or scientific synonymy is recorded for this species in the available data.

Morphology

Synodontis alberti has the typical Mochokid build: a broad, somewhat flattened head, a robust, tapering body, three pairs of barbels (one long maxillary pair on the upper jaw and two shorter, branched mandibular pairs below), an erect dorsal fin, and a forked caudal fin. The pectoral and dorsal fins are each preceded by a stiff, serrated spine that can be locked erect — the locking mechanism is muscular and the spines are sharp; they readily tangle in a mesh net and can pierce skin.

FishBase records a maximum standard length of 8 in, making this a medium-sized Synodontis. Like all members of the genus the body is scaleless — the skin is naked rather than armoured with bony scutes — which is relevant for medication (see 'In the aquarium'). Habitat

Synodontis alberti is native to West and Central African river systems, with records from Cameroon and the Congo basin. It is a freshwater demersal species — it lives on or near the riverbed — in the soft, warm lowland river habitats typical of this region. These rivers are generally characterised by moderate to soft water with a pH range of roughly 6.0 to 8.0 and warm temperatures in the tropical band.

As a benthic catfish it shelters under submerged wood, leaf litter and rocky ledges during the day, emerging to forage after dark. The precise microhabitat preferences within these river systems are not well documented for this species specifically; it is not a lake endemic and does not require the hard, alkaline conditions of the rift lakes.

Feeding

Synodontis alberti is an omnivorous benthic forager. Like most members of the genus it takes aquatic invertebrates — insect larvae, small crustaceans and worms — along with organic detritus and some plant or algal material encountered while rooting through the substrate. Foraging occurs predominantly at night.

In the aquarium it will accept the full range of sinking catfish foods: pellets, wafers, frozen bloodworm, brine shrimp, daphnia and other prepared foods. Because it is nocturnal and may be outcompeted at feeding time by diurnal tankmates, it is worth adding food after lights-out to ensure the catfish gets its share. It is not a fussy feeder and does not require live food, though it will take it when offered.

Mating

Synodontis alberti does not use the cuckoo brood-parasitism strategy of S. multipunctatus. It is an oviparous species that scatters adhesive eggs over the substrate, with little or no documented parental care — the typical reproductive mode for non-parasitic Synodontis. The sexes are not easily distinguished externally; as in most squeakers, mature females may be slightly fuller-bodied than males, but there is no strong external dimorphism documented for this species.

No specific courtship or pre-spawning behaviour is documented in the available literature for S. alberti. General Synodontis breeding triggers are understood to include water changes, temperature fluctuations and conditioning with live or frozen foods, but concrete records for this species are absent from the sources consulted.

Breeding

Synodontis alberti has no documented breeding record in the hobbyist aquarium literature. It is not among the Synodontis regularly or commercially bred in captivity. Most hobbyist specimens are wild-collected from their native rivers.

Some West and Central African Synodontis species have been induced to spawn commercially using hormone injections, but there are no published reports of this for S. alberti. Keepers interested in attempting a spawn would need to condition a group of well-fed adults, provide a large, well-planted or cave-rich tank, and note any spawning activity closely — but should not expect success is easily achievable. Data are genuinely sparse for this species.

In the aquarium

Synodontis alberti is a medium-sized catfish reaching 8 in standard length: the size trap is real here. A specimen at adult size needs a tank of at least 47 in length, and it should not be purchased for a small or crowded community on the assumption it will stay compact. It is a West/Central African river fish, so it does well in moderate, warm water (roughly 75–81 °F, pH 6.0–8.0) rather than the hard alkaline conditions needed by Tanganyikan rift-lake Synodontis.

Like all Synodontis it is scaleless — the skin is naked, not armoured — and this makes it more sensitive than scaled fish to copper-based medications and some other treatments. Dose conservatively (half the standard rate is a common guideline) and remove it from a main tank to a bare hospital tank before treating. The locking, serrated pectoral and dorsal spines tangle easily in a mesh net and can jab the keeper; always move this fish in a smooth-sided container rather than netting it.

It is nocturnal and should be given caves, driftwood or dense planting to shelter in during the day. It is peaceful toward tankmates that are too large to eat, but as with most catfish it will consume very small fish and invertebrates. Feed after lights-out to ensure it competes successfully at the bottom. It is rarely available in specialist shops and is not a widely kept species.

Conservation

Synodontis alberti has not been formally assessed by the IUCN Red List as of the date of this article, and its current status is Not Evaluated (NE). The absence of an assessment reflects limited research attention rather than confirmed security: the species is not widely studied and its population trends, range size and vulnerability to habitat loss in the Congo and Cameroon river basins are not quantified.

The Congo basin and associated West African river drainages face ongoing pressures from deforestation, agricultural runoff and artisanal mining affecting water quality and riverbed habitats. Without a formal IUCN assessment, the conservation status of S. alberti remains uncertain. Aquarium specimens are predominantly wild-collected; the trade volume appears low given the species' limited profile in the hobby.
