Synodontis ocellifer, the ocellated squeaker, is a large West and Central African mochokid catfish described by Boulenger in 1900 from the drainages of the Senegal and Gambia rivers. Capable of reaching 19.5–23.5 in in the wild, it is a notably substantial fish that outgrows most home aquaria, yet juveniles are regularly sold in the hobby under names that obscure how big they become — the classic catfish size trap. A scaleless benthic forager of broad river systems across the Sahel and Guinea zone, it is an omnivore active after dark, armed with locking serrated spines, and essentially unbreedable without commercial hormone induction.

Taxonomy & naming

Synodontis ocellifer was described by the Belgian-British ichthyologist George Albert Boulenger in 1900. It belongs to the family Mochokidae — the African squeakers and upside-down catfishes — and to the speciose genus Synodontis, which encompasses well over a hundred species distributed across tropical Africa. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, California Academy of Sciences) treats Synodontis ocellifer as the valid combination; no major synonymies or subsequent transfers are on record.

The genus name Synodontis is an old term applied to these catfishes, conventionally read from the Greek as 'joined' or 'meeting teeth'. The species epithet ocellifer derives from the Latin ocellus (a small eye or eye-like spot) and -fer (bearing, carrying) — 'bearing eye-spots', referring to the rounded, ocellated markings on the body that distinguish this species from the more uniformly spotted members of the genus. In the aquarium trade it occasionally appears under the vernacular names ocellated squeaker or ocellated synodontis.

Morphology

Synodontis ocellifer has the characteristic mochokid body plan: a broad, depressed head, a robust trunk that tapers to a deeply forked caudal fin, three pairs of barbels (one long, smooth maxillary pair and two shorter, branched mandibular pairs), a tall dorsal fin and a humped dorsal profile. The body ground colour is pale greyish-brown to buff, overlaid with rounded dark eye-spots (ocelli) that give the species its name; fin markings vary. FishBase records 20–30 mandibular teeth, consistent with the genus.

Maximum size is 19.5 in TL (FishBase) with some wild reports reaching 23.5 in; aquarium specimens are often reported in the 8 in range, which reflects sub-adult size rather than an adult ceiling — the fish continues to grow. Like all Synodontis the skin is entirely scaleless and naked. The leading rays of both the dorsal and pectoral fins are stiffened into serrated, locking spines that can be locked erect and rasped against the pectoral girdle to produce an audible squeak — an anti-predator and communication signal.

Habitat

Synodontis ocellifer is a West and Central African river fish with a broad distribution across the Sahel and Guinea zone. Its range spans the Senegal, Gambia, Volta and Niger systems (including the Benue tributary), the Lake Chad drainage, the Densu in Ghana and the Kwa Ibo in Nigeria — a sweep of large, mostly lowland rivers that share a seasonally variable hydroregime. This is not a rift-lake or blackwater species: these are broad, often turbid, productive river systems with variable but generally moderate water chemistry.

In life it inhabits the benthic and sub-surface zones, sheltering among rocks, submerged root masses and coarse substrate during the day and foraging over the bottom at night. Being a fish of large equatorial rivers it tolerates a relatively wide pH range (6.2–8.0) and warm temperatures (73–82 °F).

Feeding

Synodontis ocellifer is an omnivore and benthic opportunist. In the wild it takes aquatic invertebrates — insect larvae, crustaceans and small molluscs — along with plant material and organic detritus from the river floor, foraging predominantly after dark. FishBase notes it carries 20–30 mandibular teeth, suited to rasping and gripping invertebrate prey.

In the aquarium it is undemanding: it readily accepts sinking pellets and wafers, frozen foods (bloodworm, brine shrimp, mussel), and Seriously Fish reports it will rasp at blanched vegetables such as peas and cucumber. Because it is strongly nocturnal, feeding should be offered after lights-out so that dominant daytime fish do not intercept the food before the catfish emerges. It is not a specialist and thrives on a varied sinking diet.

Mating

Mating behaviour in the wild is not well documented for this species. Like most non-parasitic Synodontis, S. ocellifer is presumed to scatter adhesive eggs over substrate — a generalised spawning strategy common in the genus. There is no evidence in the literature or cache of brood parasitism (the cuckoo trick is specific to S. multipunctatus and closely related Tanganyikan species), and none of the social pair-bonding or territory-holding associated with nest-guarders.

Sexual dimorphism is subtle at best: fully mature females tend to be deeper-bodied and heavier-set than males of equivalent length, but external sex differences are not reliably obvious in the hobby. Conditioning for spawning likely requires the seasonal rainfall and temperature cues of the native river systems, which are difficult to replicate at home.

Breeding

Synodontis ocellifer has not been successfully bred in home aquaria. Seriously Fish and Aqua-fish.net both confirm this: commercial production relies on hormone induction (GnRH-analogue injection) at specialist African fish farms, and the fish available in the hobby are predominantly wild-caught or commercially farm-stimulated rather than captive-bred through natural aquarium spawning.

The failure is not unusual for a large, river-dwelling Synodontis — the genus as a whole is poorly bred in captivity outside the cuckoo-parasitism trick of S. multipunctatus. There are no documented home-aquarium successes on record for this species. Keepers should not attempt to acquire it as a breeding project without professional hormone-induction capability.

In the aquarium

The central caution with Synodontis ocellifer is size. Wild fish reach 19.5–23.5 in; even the frequently quoted aquarium figure of around 8 in is a sub-adult measurement. A fully grown specimen needs a tank of at least 55–80 US gal with a large footprint, and ideally considerably more — a 4-foot (47 in) minimum is sometimes cited for juveniles, but adult fish require substantially more space. This is not a fish for a standard community aquarium, and purchasing juveniles without accounting for adult size is the single most common mistake with this and similar large Synodontis.

The skin is entirely scaleless, which makes S. ocellifer sensitive to copper-based medications and some other fish treatments. Dose conservatively — half the standard rate is often advised — and avoid medications contra-indicated for scaleless catfishes. The locking, serrated pectoral and dorsal spines tangle readily in a net and can jab the keeper; move this fish in a plastic tub or container, never a dip-net. In the aquarium it is strongly nocturnal and needs ample caves, overhangs and décor for daytime refuge; without shelter it is stressed and rarely seen. It can be territorial toward conspecifics in confined quarters as it matures, and it will eat smaller fish. Water chemistry should fall within the species' natural range: pH 6.2–8.0, temperature 73–82 °F; no extremes of softness or hardness are necessary.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List assessed Synodontis ocellifer as Least Concern in October 2019, with population trend listed as unknown. Its wide distribution across several major West African drainage systems — Senegal, Gambia, Niger, Volta, Chad, and smaller coastal rivers in Ghana and Nigeria — means there is no range-wide collapse apparent at the time of assessment, and no major threats were identified at that stage.

Nevertheless, West African river systems face escalating pressure from dam construction (which interrupts migration and alters flood cycles), artisanal and commercial overfishing, and increasing pollution and catchment degradation. The IUCN notes that ongoing monitoring is warranted. Aquarium supply of this species is largely wild-collected or hormone-farm-produced rather than captive-bred, so collection pressure on native populations may be locally significant where the species is targeted by the export trade.
