Taxonomy & naming
Tatia akroa was formally described in 2020 by Souza e Souza, Sarmento-Soares, Canto and Ribeiro in Neotropical Ichthyology, based on specimens collected from the rio Perdida, a tributary of the rio Sono in the rio Tocantins basin, Tocantins State, Brazil. It belongs to the family Auchenipteridae, the driftwood catfishes, within the genus Tatia — a group of small, slender, nocturnal South American catfishes. The Catalog of Fishes treats Tatia akroa as the currently valid name, and no earlier combination under a different genus is documented for this recently described species.
The species epithet akroa honours the Akroá, an indigenous people historically associated with the region spanning eastern Tocantins State to southern Piauí State in Brazil, reflecting the fish's restricted range on the Tocantins headwater plateau where it was discovered.
Morphology
Tatia akroa is one of the smallest members of its genus, known from a size range of about 1–2 in standard length across the type series, with the holotype measuring 1.5 in SL — in round terms, an adult tops out at roughly 2 in SL. Like all driftwood catfishes it is scaleless, with smooth naked skin rather than the bony plating seen in armoured catfish families, which makes it more sensitive to copper and many aquarium medications than a scaled fish.
As in other Tatia, the body is slender and laterally compressed, the head bears three pairs of barbels, and the dorsal and pectoral fins carry stiff spines. Male auchenipterids, including this species, show a distinctive modification of the anterior anal-fin rays into an elongate, tubular intromittent organ used for internal fertilisation, together with a urogenital opening formed as a tubular structure with a visible genital papilla — a structural giveaway of the family's unusual mating system described below.
Habitat
The species is known only from small tributary streams of the upper rio Tocantins drainage on the Serra Geral do Tocantins plateau in Tocantins State, central Brazil — a highland headwater system rather than the lowland Amazon mainstem. The type locality, the rio Perdida, is a tributary of the rio Sono.
No water chemistry was recorded in the original description, and no aquarium-trade water-parameter data exists for this rarely kept species. Given the setting — clear-flowing, forested upland tributaries typical of the Tocantins headwaters — it likely experiences soft, mildly acidic to neutral water, but this has not been directly measured for Tatia akroa and should be treated as inference rather than documented fact.
Feeding
Stomach content analysis of a dissected specimen showed Tatia akroa feeding on terrestrial insects, including fragments of Diptera (flies) and Coleoptera (beetles), indicating a nocturnal insectivorous diet typical of small driftwood cats that pick fallen or drifting insect prey off the bottom and among submerged wood and leaf litter after dark.
No aquarium feeding record exists for this species specifically, but its relatives in the genus and family are managed as nocturnal benthic micro-predators: they take small live and frozen invertebrate foods (bloodworm, daphnia, brine shrimp) and sinking prepared foods offered after lights-out, when these shy, dark-active fish are most willing to forage.
Mating
Tatia akroa shares the reproductive hallmark of the Auchenipteridae: internal fertilisation. The male's anterior anal-fin rays are modified into an elongate intromittent organ, and mating involves direct transfer of sperm to the female rather than external release over open water. This is rare among catfishes as a whole and stands in sharp contrast to the open-water egg-scattering seen in many other Siluriformes.
Following internal fertilisation, female driftwood catfishes are understood to store sperm and lay fertilised eggs at a later time — a strategy documented in the original description of this species through the presence of the modified male anal fin and tubular urogenital opening. Closely related Tatia species are reported to spawn in cave-like refuges, but no direct observation of spawning site or timing has been published for Tatia akroa itself.
Breeding
No confirmed captive breeding of Tatia akroa has been recorded. Given the family's biology, the reproductive mode is internal fertilisation via the male's modified anal fin, with the female storing sperm and laying fertile eggs sometime after mating rather than immediately — a pattern documented for driftwood catfishes generally and inferred for this species from its anatomy.
Parental care after spawning is not documented for this species; related Tatia are not known for extended brood guarding once eggs are laid. Because the species was only described in 2020 and is essentially unknown in the trade, hobbyist breeding accounts do not exist, and anyone attempting to keep the species should treat successful reproduction as an open question rather than a routine outcome.
In the aquarium
Tatia akroa is not established in the aquarium hobby — it is a recently described, little-collected species, and Planet Catfish records breeding in captivity as unknown. Its real adult size is small, at roughly 2 in SL, so it does not pose the size trap that catches out keepers of larger driftwood cats, but a stated minimum tank size of around 23.5 in is still recommended by hobbyist references covering the genus, since these are active, schooling-inclined fish that need swimming room and cover.
Being scaleless, it should be treated as medication-sensitive: dose copper-based treatments and many standard medications conservatively, as is standard practice for naked-skinned catfishes. It also carries stiff dorsal and pectoral spines typical of the family, which can snag in an aquarium net, so it is safer to move the fish in a submerged container than to chase it with a net. As a nocturnal species it should be given driftwood, leaf litter or other dense cover and is best observed or fed after the lights go down.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assesses Tatia akroa as Least Concern, an assessment from 2021. The species is known from upland tributaries of the rio Tocantins basin in Tocantins State, Brazil, a region that has not been flagged for the intense habitat pressures affecting some other Amazonian catchments, though as with many recently described, narrow-range headwater fishes, its full distribution and population trend remain incompletely surveyed.
It is not a species drawn from or supplying a significant aquarium trade, so collection pressure for the hobby is not considered a relevant threat; its conservation outlook instead depends on the condition of the Serra Geral do Tocantins headwater streams it inhabits.
