Taxonomy & naming
Tatia boemia was described by Koch & Reis in 1996. It belongs to the family Auchenipteridae, the driftwood catfishes, within the genus Tatia — a group of small South American auchenipterids distinguished from their larger relatives (Auchenipterus, Trachelyopterus) by their modest size and wood-dwelling habits. A genus revision published in the Brazilian journal Neotropical Ichthyology (SciELO) confirms Tatia as a valid genus and recognises boemia among its species.
Older Siluriformes literature scattered small auchenipterids across a tangle of genera before the family was untangled taxonomically; Tatia boemia has always been treated within Tatia since its description, without a legacy combination to flag. Morphology
Tatia boemia is a small catfish, reaching a maximum reported length of only about 2.5 in SL (FishBase) — a genuinely small species by catfish standards, though as with all Auchenipteridae the skin is naked and scaleless rather than plated. The dorsum and dorsolateral flanks are greyish-brown, stippled with small dark chromatophores that thin out toward the pale, sparsely marked belly, giving the fish a mottled, driftwood-matching camouflage.
Like other auchenipterids it carries stiff, serrated spines at the leading edge of the dorsal and pectoral fins that can lock erect; these can catch in a net and are best avoided by moving the fish in a container rather than netting it directly. The scaleless skin also means it is more sensitive than a scaled fish to copper and many medications, so any treatment should be dosed conservatively.
Habitat
The species is native to the upper Uruguay River basin in southern Brazil, where it inhabits river channels with submerged wood, root tangles and leaf litter — the driftwood cats' namesake refuge. It shelters deep in these structures during the day and only comes out to forage once darkness falls.
Detailed water-chemistry data specific to this species is sparse in the available sources; the upper Uruguay basin is a subtropical South American river system, and the fish should be kept accordingly rather than assumed to need the soft, acidic blackwater conditions of Amazonian species. Data sparse on precise pH and hardness preferences — err toward stable, well-oxygenated river-type conditions with structure to hide in.
Feeding
Tatia boemia is a nocturnal benthic omnivore. In the wild it forages the bottom and among wood after dark for aquatic invertebrates, detritus and small prey items, rather than actively hunting in open water during the day.
In the aquarium it accepts sinking pellets, frozen foods such as bloodworm and brine shrimp, and other prepared foods, but because it is shy and strictly nocturnal it does best when food is offered after the lights go out, so it is not out-competed by more visible, diurnal tankmates.
Mating
Driftwood catfishes of the family Auchenipteridae are unusual among catfish in using internal fertilisation, and Tatia boemia follows this pattern. The male's anal fin is modified into an intromittent organ used to transfer sperm directly to the female during a brief internal mating event, rather than the pair releasing eggs and milt together over open substrate.
Following mating, the female stores the sperm internally and can go on to lay a fertilised clutch days or even weeks later, without further involvement from the male. This decoupling of mating from spawning is rare among catfishes generally and is one of the defining biological features of the Auchenipteridae.
Breeding
Because fertilisation happens internally and spawning is delayed and female-controlled, Tatia boemia does not fit the egg-scattering or nest-guarding patterns seen in most other catfish groups, and it has not been documented as a routinely home-bred species. Aquarists should not expect the visible courtship-and-spawn sequence typical of substrate spawners; instead, a female may produce a fertile clutch well after any observed mating activity, with no parental care apparent afterward from either sex.
Set against this biology, keepers report little to no reliable captive breeding of this species. Anyone attempting it should expect the mating and the eventual egg-laying to be separated in time and largely undetectable until fry or eggs simply appear, if breeding condition is achieved at all.
In the aquarium
At under 3 in SL, Tatia boemia stays genuinely small and can be kept in a modest, well-furnished aquarium — but its needs are about structure and darkness more than tank size. Provide driftwood, root tangles, bamboo or PVC tubes and dense cover so the fish has somewhere to retreat during the day; without hiding spots it stays stressed and rarely shows itself.
Its scaleless skin makes it sensitive to copper-based and many other medications, so treat any tank containing it conservatively, often at reduced dose. It also carries locking dorsal and pectoral spines that can snag a net, so it is safer to guide the fish into a container when moving it. As a nocturnal species it is best appreciated with dim lighting or after dark, and tankmates should be peaceful river-community fish that will not out-compete it for food offered at night.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assesses Tatia boemia globally as Least Concern, based on a 2020 assessment. FishBase notes, however, that despite this global status the species is considered endangered within Brazil, where its known range is limited to the upper Uruguay River basin — a reminder that a broad Least Concern rating can mask real pressure on a narrow-range endemic population.
As with many small, obscure single-basin catfishes, detailed population trend data is limited, and habitat degradation within its restricted Brazilian range is the most likely long-term concern even though the species is not currently classified as threatened at the global level.
