Taxonomy & naming
Tatia brunnea was described by the Dutch ichthyologist G. F. Mees in 1974. It belongs to the family Auchenipteridae, the driftwood catfishes, within the subfamily Centromochlinae, and to the genus Tatia — a group of small, laterally compressed woodcats found across tropical South America. A systematic revision of the genus confirms Tatia as monophyletic within Centromochlinae and places T. brunnea among roughly eight species recognised in Tatia sensu stricto; no historical placement under a different genus is documented for this species.
The genus name Tatia is derived from a local South American vernacular name for these small catfishes rather than from Greek or Latin roots. The species epithet brunnea is Latin for "brown", describing the fish's understated, plain brownish colouration compared to some of its more patterned relatives. The Catalog of Fishes treats Tatia brunnea Mees, 1974 as the currently valid name.
Morphology
Like other driftwood cats, Tatia brunnea has a laterally compressed, almost knife-thin body plan built for slipping into narrow gaps between branches and roots, topped with a rounded head bearing three pairs of barbels. It reaches a modest maximum size of about 4.5 in standard length, making it one of the smaller members of its genus. Colouration is a plain, unmarked brown, in keeping with its name, without the bolder spotting or banding seen in some other Tatia species.
As in all catfishes the skin is scaleless (naked), which has direct consequences for medication dosing — see "In the aquarium". The fish carries the stiff, serrated, locking dorsal and pectoral spines typical of the order Siluriformes; these lock rigid when the fish is alarmed, readily tangle in aquarium nets, and can jab an unwary hand. Sexual dimorphism appears early: males show it from around 1.5 in, well before either sex reaches sexual maturity, which occurs above roughly 2 in SL (and above 3 in SL in an upper Amazon population).
Habitat
Tatia brunnea is native to river systems of the Guianas and the northern Amazon basin: the Suriname and Marowijne basins in Suriname, the Maroni and Sinnamary basins in French Guiana, and the Negro River drainage plus the Trombetas River drainage and a single known locality in the central Amazon basin of Brazil. The type series includes material collected from streams such as the Kamaloe Stream in Suriname.
These are flowing, riverine and stream habitats typical of the Guiana Shield and northern Amazon — waters that run through and around fallen wood, root tangles and leaf litter, the structure driftwood cats depend on for daytime cover. Specific published water chemistry for the type localities is sparse in the sources available here; as a Guiana Shield / Amazonian stream fish it should be assumed to prefer soft, warm, well-oxygenated water rather than mineral-rich or alkaline conditions, though exact figures are not confirmed for this species specifically.
Feeding
Tatia brunnea is a nocturnal benthic omnivore, foraging over the bottom and through submerged wood mostly after dark for small invertebrates and other prey. In the aquarium it takes most sinking dried and prepared foods readily once acclimated, and particularly relishes small live and frozen foods such as bloodworm and Tubifex.
Because it is shy and active mainly at night, it is easily out-competed by bolder tankmates if fed only during the day; offering food after lights-out, or once the tank has settled into evening dimness, gives it a fair chance to feed. It is not a fussy specialist and adapts well to a varied prepared diet.
Mating
Mating in Tatia brunnea follows the pattern documented for driftwood cats of the subfamily Centromochlinae, and it is genuinely unusual among catfishes: fertilisation is internal. The male's anal fin is modified into an intromittent organ, functioning much like the gonopodium of a livebearer, which he uses to transfer sperm directly into the female during a brief mating contact rather than releasing milt over scattered eggs.
The female then stores the sperm internally and can lay fertile eggs later — sometimes considerably later — often depositing them in a cave or crevice, with or without the male present at the time of laying. This decoupling of mating from egg-laying is rare among catfishes generally and essentially unheard of outside this group, and it means a female can produce a fertile clutch without a male having been present at the moment of spawning.
Breeding
Because fertilisation happens internally at mating and egg-laying can follow much later, Tatia brunnea does not fit the egg-scattering pattern typical of most catfishes, and it is not a species with a well-documented home-aquarium breeding protocol. Available sources describe the internal-fertilisation mechanism itself but do not report a reliable, repeatable breeding method for hobbyists; data on rearing this particular species in captivity is sparse.
Parental care beyond egg deposition is not documented for this species — unlike the bubble-nesting armoured catfishes or the guarding cavity-spawners of other families, there is no evidence of the female or male tending the clutch after laying. Keepers should treat successful captive breeding of T. brunnea as an exception rather than something to plan for.
In the aquarium
Tatia brunnea stays modest at around 4.5 in, so it does not need an oversized tank, but it does need the right setup: a well-established aquarium simulating a flowing stream, with driftwood branches, sand or fine gravel, rockwork, and hiding places such as terracotta pipes or plant pots. As a nocturnal, secretive fish it will spend most of the day tucked away and should not be judged (or fed) as if it were a bold daytime feeder.
Two care points follow directly from its biology. It is a scaleless catfish, so it is more sensitive than scaled fishes to copper-based medications and many other treatments — dose conservatively, often at half the labelled rate, and monitor closely. It also carries locking, serrated dorsal and pectoral spines that catch in aquarium nets and can jab the keeper; move it in a cup or container rather than netting it. As a riverine species it is intolerant of nitrogenous waste buildup, so excellent water quality and regular partial water changes are essential rather than optional.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assesses Tatia brunnea as Least Concern, an assessment made in 2020. It has a reasonably broad range across river systems of Suriname, French Guiana and northern Brazil, and is not currently considered at risk at the species level.
As with many small, poorly studied driftwood catfishes, detailed population trend data and specific threat assessments are limited, and its status should be understood as reflecting a lack of known widespread decline rather than dense monitoring data. It is not a significant part of the aquarium trade, so collection pressure is not considered a driver of concern for this species.
