Taxonomy & naming
Tatia carolae was described by Richard P. Vari and Carl J. Ferraris Jr. in 2013. It belongs to the family Auchenipteridae, the driftwood catfishes, within the genus Tatia — a group of small, deep-bodied South American catfishes distinct from their larger, often free-swimming auchenipterid relatives. FishBase and some other databases still index the species under the older combination Centromochlus carolae, a genus long used for small driftwood cats before generic boundaries within the family were revised; the valid combination used here follows the original description, Tatia carolae.
The species epithet carolae honours Carol Youmans of the Smithsonian's National Museum of Natural History (NMNH). Tatia is a genus name coined for this group of small South American catfishes; species in the genus are collectively known in the hobby as "driftwood cats" or "woodcats" for their habit of sheltering among submerged branches and root tangles.
Morphology
Tatia carolae is one of the smallest catfishes in the aquarium trade, reaching only about 1.5 in standard length. Like other driftwood cats it has a scaleless, naked skin, a somewhat flattened head, and three pairs of barbels used to feel out food and structure in the dark. The dorsal fin carries two spines, but these are not venomous — FishBase records the species as harmless to handlers, unlike some larger, more heavily armed catfish relatives.
Body colour and pattern in Tatia carolae follow the general driftwood-cat look: a mottled, cryptic pattern suited to blending in among submerged wood and leaf litter, though detailed colour description is sparse in the available literature. Mating
Tatia carolae belongs to Auchenipteridae, the only family of catfishes known to practise internal fertilisation — a genuinely unusual trait among the more than 3,000 catfish species. In males, the anal fin is modified into an intromittent organ used to transfer sperm directly into the female during mating, rather than the external egg-and-milt release typical of almost all other catfishes.

Even so, it should be given a well-structured tank with driftwood, root tangles and leaf litter that mimic its natural shelter, plus fine sand or gravel substrate reflecting where it is collected in the wild.
Because it is scaleless, it carries the medication sensitivity typical of naked-skinned catfishes: dose copper-based treatments and other medications conservatively, following the same caution used for loaches and other scaleless fish. Its two dorsal spines are not venomous, but it should still be handled gently and moved in a container rather than netted where possible, both for its own safety given its small size and to avoid any spines snagging in netting. As a nocturnal forager it appreciates dim lighting and cover during the day, becoming active after dark; feed accordingly. Given its rarity in the trade and minimal husbandry documentation, it is best suited to experienced keepers of small South American catfishes rather than as a first driftwood cat.
