Taxonomy & naming
Zungaro zungaro was described by the German naturalist Alexander von Humboldt in 1821 based on material collected during his celebrated South American expeditions. The species belongs to the family Pimelodidae, the long-whiskered catfishes of South and Central America, a diverse and ecologically dominant group in the main river channels of the Amazon and Orinoco drainages.
The genus Zungaro was erected to house the largest members of the pimelodid lineage; under older treatments the species appeared under various names including Pimelodus zungaro and Paulicea zungaro, and it may still appear under those synonyms in older trade literature. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) treats Zungaro zungaro as the valid name. The epithet zungaro derives from a Quechua vernacular name for large river catfishes of this region.
Morphology
The redtail catfish has the classic large pimelodid build: a broad, flattened head equipped with three pairs of long barbels — one pair of maxillary barbels that may extend past the dorsal fin, and two shorter mandibular pairs. The mouth is exceptionally wide, capable of engulfing surprisingly large prey. The body tapers to a deeply forked tail. Coloration is variable but juveniles are famously striking, with a brownish-olive dorsal surface and a vivid orange-red lower tail lobe that gives the species its trade name.
Adults reach 35.5–47 in total length and reports of specimens approaching 55 in exist for river-caught fish. Like all pimelodids the skin is entirely scaleless and naked, with no protective plates or scutes. The dorsal and pectoral fins bear stiff, serrated locking spines capable of inflicting a painful puncture wound; these spines can lock erect and tangle fatally in a net. Always move this fish in a rigid container, never with a net.
Habitat
Zungaro zungaro is native to the main channels and larger tributaries of the Amazon and Orinoco basins in South America, ranging across Brazil, Peru, Colombia, Venezuela and adjacent drainages. It is a channel-dwelling species, typically found in deep, fast-moving water over sandy or muddy substrates rather than in shallow flooded forests or blackwater creeks.
Water conditions in these large river channels are warm (75–82 °F) and typically soft to slightly acidic or circumneutral — the typical white-water and clear-water chemistry of the Amazon main stem and its major tributaries. Juveniles and subadults may be encountered in somewhat shallower water near the banks; large adults are inhabitants of the deep mid-channel.
Feeding
This is a large, highly predatory, primarily piscivorous catfish. In the wild it hunts fish, large invertebrates and any animal matter small enough to be engulfed by that outsized mouth. It forages mainly at night and at dusk, relying heavily on its long barbels to locate prey in turbid river water.
In captivity it readily accepts large meaty foods: whole fish, prawns, large pellets and sticks designed for large predatory catfishes. Feeder fish should be used with caution — pathogen transmission is a real risk. Any tankmate that fits in the catfish's mouth will be eaten; companions must genuinely exceed it in size, and even then a large adult redtail shares a tank with almost nothing safely. Feed juveniles several times per week; large adults do well on fewer, larger meals.
Mating
Reproductive biology in the wild is poorly documented at a detailed level, partly because large adults are difficult to study in the main channel and partly because the species is rarely if ever reproduced naturally in captivity. What is known comes largely from commercial hatchery experience in South America, where the species is bred under induced conditions.
Like other large pimelodids, Zungaro zungaro is presumed to undertake spawning migrations linked to seasonal river flooding. Females likely broadcast demersal eggs over substrate in large river channels, and parental care after spawning is minimal to absent — consistent with the pattern of open-channel broadcast spawners that invest in large egg numbers rather than offspring attendance.
Breeding
Home aquarium breeding of Zungaro zungaro is not documented and is effectively impossible given the fish's size requirements. All commercially available specimens are produced at professional fish farms in South America, where spawning is induced through hormone injection (human chorionic gonadotropin or GnRH analogues) in large purpose-built facilities. Even under those conditions the fish requires very large spawning tanks, controlled water temperature, and precise hormonal protocols.
Keepers should treat this species as non-breedable in any home or even most public aquarium settings. The redtail catfish's enormous adult size makes it impractical to maintain a breeding-condition group, let alone to provide the environmental cues — space, seasonal simulation, hormonal induction — that commercial facilities use.
In the aquarium
The redtail catfish is one of the most notorious size-trap species in the freshwater hobby. Juveniles are sold at 1 in and are undeniably appealing; within two to three years they routinely surpass 23.5–35.5 in and require a tank of 2,0.5 US gal or more just to survive, let alone thrive. No standard home aquarium is adequate for an adult, and rehoming a metre-long catfish is extremely difficult. Do not purchase this fish without a firm plan for its long-term housing at a public aquarium or large-scale private facility.
Beyond size, several husbandry points are critical. The scaleless skin makes Zungaro zungaro sensitive to copper and many standard medications — if treatment is necessary, use half-dose or copper-free alternatives and follow guidance for scaleless species. The locking, serrated pectoral and dorsal spines tangle catastrophically in a net and can inflict deep puncture wounds; always move even small specimens in a rigid container. Juveniles are nocturnal and need substantial cover — large driftwood, pipes or overhanging rockwork. Filtration must be powerful and frequent, as large carnivorous catfishes generate heavy waste loads. Companions must be genuinely too large to swallow, and realistically a large adult is a species-only specimen.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List now assesses Zungaro zungaro as Least Concern. The species is commercially important in South American artisanal and sport fisheries as well as the aquarium trade, and large predatory catfishes are often disproportionately affected by overfishing because of their slow maturation and low reproductive rates relative to smaller species.
All aquarium specimens should be assumed to be farm-bred, originating from South American hatcheries that produce the species under hormone-induced protocols. Wild-caught fish do enter the trade occasionally, particularly as juveniles harvested from floodplain nursery habitats, and buyers should ask suppliers about provenance.
