Taxonomy & naming
Devario annandalei was described by Bashir Ahmad Chaudhuri in 1908. The original description placed the species in the genus Danio, and the combination Danio annandalei appears in older literature. The species was subsequently reclassified into Devario — a genus erected (and progressively refined) to accommodate the larger-bodied, more elongate danionins of South and Southeast Asia, distinct from the smaller true Danio. The genus Devario has been broadly adopted since the early 2000s and is recognised by the Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer) as the valid home for this species; the parenthetical authority (Chaudhuri, 1908) marks the original description outside the current genus.
The epithet annandalei honours Nelson Annandale (1876–1924), a Scottish zoologist and Director of the Zoological Survey of India who collected widely across South and Southeast Asia in the early twentieth century; his name appears on several fish, reptile and invertebrate taxa described from that era.
Morphology
Devario annandalei is a moderately large danionin reaching up to 3.5 in standard length according to FishBase, placing it comfortably within the size range of the giant danio group. The body is elongate and laterally compressed, with the characteristic upturned mouth of a surface-oriented and mid-water feeder. Coloration in the genus typically runs to silver or pale blue flanks with darker horizontal banding or striping, though detailed published colour descriptions specifically for this species are sparse in the accessible literature.
Like other Devario, it is benthopelagic in habit but spends much of its time in the water column and near the surface, especially when active. The species is sexually dimorphic in the manner typical of the genus: females become noticeably deeper-bodied when gravid, while males remain slimmer and more torpedo-shaped.
Habitat
The species is recorded from the Chao Phraya, Salween and Mekong river basins in Myanmar and Thailand — three of the major drainages of mainland Southeast Asia, each draining large areas of mountainous terrain before reaching the Gulf of Thailand or the Andaman Sea. Within these systems Devario species characteristically favour rivers and streams with rocky or gravel substrates and moderate flow, where well-oxygenated, clear water predominates.
Temperature preferences for the genus broadly span 59–77 °F, consistent with the hill-stream and submontane conditions that characterise much of the Salween and upper Mekong catchments. The IUCN notes the distribution as spanning both Myanmar and Thailand, covering a substantial geographic range across multiple independent drainages.
Feeding
FishBase assigns Devario annandalei a trophic level of 3.0, placing it at the lower end of carnivory — an omnivore that takes invertebrates, small aquatic insects and larvae, and supplements these with plant material and organic detritus. This is consistent with the feeding ecology of Devario broadly, which are active, opportunistic fish that exploit the surface and water column for drifting or emerging invertebrates.
In the aquarium the species will accept good-quality flake and small pellet foods readily, with live and frozen items such as daphnia, bloodworm and brine shrimp improving condition and colouration. Its active, open-water disposition means it competes confidently at feeding time.
Mating
Devario annandalei, in common with all danionins, is an egg-scattering, non-guarding spawner. There is no nest, no pair bond and no parental care of any kind. Spawning is driven by seasonal cues — warming temperatures, rising water level and increased flow simulate the onset of the monsoon or seasonal floods that trigger reproduction in the wild across its mainland Southeast Asian range.
Courtship consists of males chasing and driving gravid females through the water column and among vegetation. When a female is ready to spawn the pair press together momentarily and release eggs and milt simultaneously. The adhesive eggs fall among plants, roots or onto the substrate, where neither parent takes any further interest in them.
Breeding
Breeding Devario annandalei in captivity follows the standard protocol for the giant danio group. A separate spawning tank with fine-leaved plants, Java moss or a mesh bottom — to allow the adhesive eggs to fall out of the adults' reach — is set up with clean, moderately soft and well-oxygenated water at the cooler end of the temperature range. A small rise in temperature and the addition of fresh water can trigger spawning behaviour.
Well-conditioned pairs or a group with multiple males and females will spawn readily, scattering a batch of adhesive eggs over plants or the substrate. Adults should be removed after spawning, as they will consume the eggs and any subsequent larvae. The eggs typically hatch within two to three days at appropriate temperatures; free-swimming larvae take infusoria and micro-foods initially, graduating to newly hatched brine shrimp as they grow.
In the aquarium
Devario annandalei suits a spacious aquarium with good water movement and strong oxygenation — a long tank with open mid-water and surface swimming space reflects the fast, well-oxygenated rivers it inhabits in the wild. It is a schooling fish and should be kept in groups of at least six to eight individuals; lone fish or small groups become shy and may harass smaller tankmates. Compatible companions include other robust, similarly sized cyprinids, loaches and active characins that tolerate or prefer the same well-oxygenated, moderately cool conditions.
Water parameters should lean toward clean, clear and moderately oxygenated: temperatures in the region of 64–77 °F suit the species well, and a broadly neutral pH is appropriate given its distribution across both the slightly acidic hill streams of the Salween system and the more neutral waters of the Chao Phraya and Mekong lowlands. Standard flake and pellet foods supplemented with live or frozen invertebrates maintain good condition.
Conservation
Devario annandalei is assessed as Data Deficient (DD) on the IUCN Red List, assessed in February 2011. The DD listing reflects insufficient data to determine whether the species meets criteria for any threatened category — not an assessment that the species is secure. It is recorded from the Chao Phraya, Salween and Mekong basins in Myanmar and Thailand, a broad geographic range across multiple major drainages, which is broadly reassuring, but detailed population data and trend information are lacking.
The rivers of mainland Southeast Asia face significant and growing pressure from hydropower development — particularly on the Mekong and Salween, where large dam projects have altered flow regimes, blocked fish migrations and inundated riverine habitat across large areas. Deforestation, agricultural runoff and sand-mining in tributary streams compound these pressures. Until population surveys specifically addressing Devario annandalei are carried out, its true conservation status remains unresolved.
