Taxonomy & naming
Clarias macrocephalus was described by the German-British zoologist Albert Günther in 1864, with the type locality given as Thailand. It belongs to the family Clariidae — the walking catfishes — a group distributed across Africa and Asia that is defined by the arborescent (tree-like) accessory breathing organ attached to the gill arches, which allows these fish to breathe atmospheric air and survive out of water for hours. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, California Academy of Sciences) treats Clarias macrocephalus as the valid combination; Günther originally placed it in the genus Clarias, and it has remained there.
The large genus Clarias contains dozens of species across Africa and Asia, several of which are commercially farmed. Clarias macrocephalus is closely related to C. batrachus (the common walking catfish), and the two species have been hybridised in aquaculture. Aquarium fish marketed as 'Thai catfish' or 'bighead catfish' occasionally turn out to be such hybrids or misidentified C. batrachus, so source information from reliable suppliers where possible.
Morphology
Like all walking catfishes, Clarias macrocephalus has a long, eel-like body, a very broad and flat head — the 'macrocephalus' (large-head) of its name — and a continuous dorsal fin that runs most of the length of the body. The pectoral fins bear stiff, serrated, locking spines that click erect when the fish is startled; these make netting dangerous for both fish and keeper. Four pairs of barbels are present: one long maxillary pair and three shorter pairs around the lower jaw, used to locate food in turbid or dark conditions.
The body is scaleless and covered in smooth, mucus-rich skin, giving the fish a characteristic slimy feel. Colour is typically olive-grey to brownish above, paler on the belly, sometimes with faint mottling. Adults routinely reach 23.5–39.5 in SL, with some records exceeding 39.5 in; this is an unambiguously large fish. The arborescent organs housed behind the gills are clearly visible when the gill covers are raised and allow the fish to gulp atmospheric air, enabling survival in poorly oxygenated or even dried-out conditions.
Habitat
Clarias macrocephalus is native to Thailand, Myanmar and likely Laos, occupying the lowland river systems and associated floodplain habitats of the Indochina region. It occurs in rivers, irrigation canals, rice paddies, swamps and standing waterbodies — any warm, shallow, often turbid freshwater where its air-breathing ability confers an advantage over gill-dependent competitors.
Water conditions in its native range are warm (75–82 °F), soft to neutral (pH around 6.5–7.5), and often low in dissolved oxygen — precisely the conditions its suprabranchial air-breathing organ evolved to exploit. It is not a clear, fast-flowing highland fish; it thrives in sluggish, murky lowland waters and is famously tolerant of poor water quality, though this tolerance does not mean it should be kept in squalid conditions in the aquarium.
Feeding
Clarias macrocephalus is a powerful nocturnal predator and opportunistic scavenger. In the wild it consumes fish, frogs, aquatic invertebrates, crustaceans and organic detritus — effectively anything animal-based that it encounters after dark. Its broad, wide-gaping mouth allows it to engulf prey of surprising size, and any fish small enough to be swallowed will be eaten.
In the aquarium it readily accepts large sinking pellets, prawns, whole fish (dead or live), mussels, earthworms and other meaty foods. It does not require live food, but will take it eagerly. Feeding should be done after lights-out, as the fish is strictly nocturnal and will be inactive and reluctant to feed during the day. Any tankmates must be large enough that the catfish genuinely cannot swallow them — when in doubt, keep it alone.
Mating
In the wild, Clarias macrocephalus spawns during the rainy season when floodplains expand and water temperatures rise. Mature males and females congregate in flooded marginal vegetation; males may defend loose territories and pursue females. As with other large clariids, spawning is triggered by seasonal cues — rising water levels, temperature and photoperiod shifts — that are essentially impossible to replicate in a standard home aquarium.
Sexing adults is possible: mature females develop a noticeably rounded abdomen when ripe with eggs, while males are generally slimmer. Both sexes carry the same locking pectoral spines and should be handled only in a container. In commercial aquaculture, males and females are selected by visual inspection and hormone injection (carp pituitary extract or synthetic GnRHa analogues) is used to induce ovulation.
Breeding
Clarias macrocephalus is farmed at scale in Thailand and other parts of Southeast Asia for food, and its reproduction is managed almost entirely through hormone induction. Females are injected with pituitary extract or GnRHa to trigger ovulation; eggs are stripped and fertilised with milt from stripped males, then incubated in controlled hatchery conditions. This is an industrialised process requiring specialised hormones and hatchery infrastructure.
Breeding in the home aquarium is essentially not achieved. The fish grows far too large for a domestic tank, it requires seasonal hormonal cues to spawn, and the artificial induction protocol is beyond the scope of the hobby. Aquarium fish of this species are sourced from commercial farms. Keepers should not attempt to breed it at home and should be aware that even juveniles purchased in the aquarium trade are farm-raised fish at the start of a growth trajectory that will far exceed any domestic setup.
In the aquarium
Clarias macrocephalus should not be acquired lightly. Adults reach 23.5–39.5 in or more in standard length and require enormous volumes of water — a minimum of 1,0.5 US gal for a single adult, and most home aquaria cannot realistically house one long-term. Juveniles are sometimes sold at 2–4 in and may appear manageable, but growth is rapid under good conditions. This is unambiguously a pond fish, a public aquarium fish, or a food fish; it is not a community aquarium animal.
Its scaleless, naked skin makes it significantly more sensitive to copper-based medications and to many common aquarium treatments than scaled fish; any medication should be used at half dose or avoided entirely unless the label explicitly states it is safe for scaleless catfish. The locking pectoral spines present a handling hazard — the spines click erect and can pierce skin; always move this fish in a large opaque container, never in a net. It is a nocturnal air-breather and must have unobstructed access to the surface; tightly sealed lids are essential, as it can and will leave the water and travel across surfaces. Clarias species are notorious invasives in many regions where they have been released — never release this fish into open water under any circumstances. Provide large caves or pipe-section shelters for daytime hiding, and keep water at 75–82 °F with a neutral pH.
Conservation
No formal IUCN Red List assessment for Clarias macrocephalus was located at the time of writing; it is treated here as Not Evaluated (NE). Its wide distribution across lowland freshwaters of Thailand and Myanmar, combined with its extraordinary resilience — air-breathing, drought-tolerant, capable of travelling overland — means it is unlikely to be globally threatened. It is, if anything, one of the more adaptable and successful freshwater fishes in its range.
The species is farmed in enormous quantities in Thailand for food and local trade, which reduces pressure on wild populations and makes it widely available. The greater ecological concern runs in the opposite direction: Clarias catfishes introduced outside their native range (deliberately or by escape from fish farms) have established feral populations in many countries, where they act as apex predators and displace native fish communities. Responsible ownership demands that no individual — whether a juvenile purchased at an aquarium shop or a farm escapee — is ever released into open water.
