Devario devario, the Bengal danio, is a mid-sized, fast-swimming cyprinid of the Ganges and Brahmaputra river systems — a schooling fish of rivers, canals and floodplain wetlands that ranges across the lowlands of northern India, Nepal and Bangladesh from the foothills of the Himalaya to the Bay of Bengal coast. Reaching about 3 in in standard length, it is one of the more robust members of the giant danio group, with a sleek, laterally compressed body and the restless energy typical of the genus. It was among the earliest Asian cyprinids described to science, named by Francis Hamilton in 1822 from specimens collected in Bengal, and it has since accumulated a string of junior synonyms that reflects its wide range and variable appearance across river drainages.

Taxonomy & naming

Devario devario was described by Francis Hamilton in 1822, originally as Cyprinus devario, from Bengal — the broad region of the Ganges delta that Hamilton explored while serving as a naturalist with the East India Company. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, the authority for valid names) places the species in the genus Devario, erected to hold the larger, more elongate members of the danio clade, and records the valid combination as Devario devario (Hamilton, 1822), the parenthetical authority indicating the transfer from Hamilton's original genus.

The species has accumulated several junior synonyms over two centuries of collecting: Devario cyanotaenia, Devario buchanani and Devario macclellandi are all names that have been applied to populations now considered conspecific, as well as the older combinations Danio devario and the original Cyprinus devario. None of these names takes priority over Hamilton's original description. The Catalog of Fishes treats all as synonyms of the valid species.

The genus Devario was separated from Danio largely on the basis of body form and lateral-line scale count. Devario species are generally larger, more elongate and found across a broader arc from the Indian subcontinent through Myanmar and into Indochina, while the true danios of Danio tend to be smaller and more confined to South Asia. The two genera are closely related and the boundary has been revised more than once; we follow the current Catalog of Fishes.

Morphology

The Bengal danio is an elongate, laterally compressed cyprinid with a streamlined profile suited to active swimming in moving water. Seriously Fish records a maximum standard length of 3 in, and FishBase gives a total length of up to 4 in — making it noticeably larger than the more familiar zebra danio and comparable in size to the better-known giant danio (Devario aequipinnatus). The mouth is terminal to slightly upturned, equipped with a pair of rostral barbels and a second pair of maxillary barbels as is typical for the genus.

The colour pattern consists of several blue-silver horizontal stripes running along the flank from behind the operculum to the caudal peduncle, set against a golden or olive-tinged ground colour; the belly is silvery white. The fins are generally hyaline with a pale yellow wash. Sexual dimorphism is moderate: females are noticeably deeper-bodied and more rounded in the belly when gravid, while males are slimmer and more torpedo-shaped.

Habitat

Devario devario occupies a broad range of lowland freshwater habitats across the Ganges and Brahmaputra drainages. FishBase records it from rivers, canals, ponds, beels (permanent ox-bow lakes and depressions) and inundated fields — a suite of habitats reflecting the strongly seasonal, monsoonal hydrology of the Bengal plain. The species tolerates both moderately flowing water and still or slow-moving conditions, and has been recorded on substrates ranging from clay and silt to sand, cobbles and boulders depending on local topography.

Water chemistry data from Seriously Fish illustrates the range of conditions the species encounters: in the wild, pH can reach 7.9–8.2 and hardness 36–268 ppm, while temperatures swing dramatically with the seasons — as warm as 81–95 °F in the summer monsoon period, dropping to 48–52 °F in winter. This thermal tolerance exceeds that of most tropical aquarium fish and marks Devario devario as a cool-tolerant, seasonally adapted species rather than a stable-tropics specialist.

Feeding

The Bengal danio is an omnivore and opportunistic feeder. FishBase records its natural diet as worms, small crustaceans and insects; Seriously Fish adds aquatic and terrestrial insects, filamentous algae, diatoms and water mites to that list — a broad dietary picture consistent with a mid-water schooling fish moving through seasonally variable habitats where food availability shifts with water level and season.

In the aquarium the species is undemanding and accepts dried foods readily. Condition and colour are best maintained by supplementing quality flake and small pellets with live and frozen items: bloodworm, Daphnia and brine shrimp are all taken eagerly. Its active, fast-moving feeding style means it competes well at mealtimes, and care should be taken to ensure slower tankmates receive their share.

Mating

Devario devario is an egg-scattering, non-guarding spawner with no pair bond and no parental care beyond the act of spawning. Like all Devario and Danio species, it shows no nest-building behaviour, no mouthbrooding and no protection of eggs or fry. Spawning is seasonal in the wild, associated with the rising temperatures and flooding of the monsoon when fish move into shallow, vegetated marginal habitats.

Courtship follows the typical danio pattern: a ripe male pursues a gravid female through vegetation or over the substrate, pressing alongside her as eggs and milt are released simultaneously. There is no sustained pair association; spawning involves multiple brief chases and releases. The adults are egg-eaters and will consume the spawn if not separated from it.

Breeding

Seriously Fish reports that Devario devario spawns readily in the aquarium, with eggs typically deposited within 24 hours of introduction to a conditioned breeding tank and hatching after approximately 24–36 hours. The standard danio approach applies: a shallow tank furnished with fine-leaved plants or a mesh spawning grid to protect the adhesive eggs from the parents is used, and the adults are removed after spawning is complete.

Conditioning with live and frozen foods encourages spawning readiness. A modest rise in temperature — to the middle of the species' range — and the addition of fresh, slightly cooler water simulates the onset of monsoon conditions that trigger breeding in the wild. The larvae become free-swimming within a few days of hatching and accept infusoria and finely powdered food as first feeds, graduating to newly hatched brine shrimp as growth allows. Growth to juvenile size is reasonably rapid given adequate feeding.

In the aquarium

The Bengal danio is an active, robust schooling fish suited to a spacious community aquarium. A group of at least six individuals is recommended — more is better — to allow natural schooling behaviour and to spread the chasing and social interaction characteristic of the genus. A longer tank with open mid-water swimming space, some planting along the margins, and gentle to moderate circulation suits the species well.

Its broad thermal tolerance (Seriously Fish gives a practical aquarium range of 59–79 °F) makes it usable in cool-water communities alongside temperate cyprinids or in unheated tanks in temperate climates during warmer months. Water chemistry requirements are flexible: Seriously Fish records aquarium pH 6.0–8.0 with moderate hardness. The species is not demanding to feed and is generally peaceful toward similarly sized tankmates, though its speed and activity level make it a poor match for very slow or delicate fishes. Given adequate space and numbers, it is a hardy and rewarding fish.

Conservation

Devario devario is assessed as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List. The species has a wide natural distribution across the lowlands of the Ganges and Brahmaputra drainages — encompassing northern India, Nepal and Bangladesh — and is tolerant of considerable habitat variation, including modified and disturbed environments such as canals, rice paddies and inundated agricultural land. The IUCN notes no evidence of a range-wide population decline sufficient to warrant a threatened category.

Despite its security at the species level, the lowland river systems of the Bengal region face ongoing pressures: agriculture-driven water extraction, sedimentation, pollution from fertiliser and industrial runoff, and the modification of seasonal floodplains all affect the aquatic habitats on which this and many other small cyprinids depend. The species' tolerance of still water and disturbed habitats provides a buffer that narrower specialists lack. No significant trade-driven collection pressure has been documented.
