Laubuka laubuca, the Indian glass barb or winged danio, is a slim, surface-orientated cyprinid of the Ganges and Brahmaputra floodplains, described by Francis Hamilton in 1822 from ponds in northern Bengal. Its strongly compressed, almost triangular body and upturned mouth mark it as a dedicated surface feeder — one that flickers across the upper water column in loose shoals, intercepting insects and drifting invertebrates. Long kept in aquariums under the name Chela laubuca, it has since been reassigned to the resurrected genus Laubuka and is today recognised as the type species of that genus. It is a calm-water, warm-plains fish that rewards patient keepers with elegant, restless movement and an almost translucent flanks that give it its 'glass barb' common name.

Taxonomy & naming

Francis Hamilton described this species in 1822 in his landmark work 'An Account of the Fishes Found in the River Ganges and its Branches', published by A. Constable in Edinburgh. Hamilton's original placement was within a broader catch-all genus, and for most of the twentieth century the species was widely cited as Chela laubuca — a combination still encountered in older aquarium literature and some regional fish lists. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS), the governing authority for valid names, now places the species in Laubuka as Laubuka laubuca (Hamilton, 1822), with the parenthetical authority indicating the move from Hamilton's original genus.

Laubuka is a small genus of surface-adapted, laterally compressed cyprinids distributed from South to Southeast Asia. It belongs to the danionin lineage of cyprinids, making it a genuine relative of the danios and rasboras despite the older 'barb' label attached by its common name. The name 'glass barb' is a hobbyist tradition rather than a taxonomic statement; the fish is biologically closer to Danio and Devario than to the true barbs of the genus Puntius or Enteromius.

Morphology

Laubuka laubuca is a small, strongly laterally compressed cyprinid. Seriously Fish records a standard length of 2–2.5 in, while FishBase gives a maximum total length of 4 in for the largest recorded individuals; typical aquarium specimens reach around 2–2.5 in, with females reportedly slightly larger and deeper-bodied than males. The body is deep relative to its length, with a sharply keeled ventral profile, almost hatchet-shaped in silhouette when viewed from the side — a form echoed in the common name 'Indian hatchet fish.'

The mouth is steeply upturned, well suited to surface feeding. Flanks are semi-translucent silver with a variable blue-silver lateral stripe or iridescent sheen, earning the 'glass barb' label from the way light passes through the body wall. The dorsal fin is set well back; the pectoral fins are relatively large and winglike in outline, suggesting the 'winged danio' name. Coloration is subtle in poor conditions but takes on a metallic gloss under good lighting and in healthy specimens.

Habitat

Laubuka laubuca is endemic to the Ganges–Brahmaputra drainage of northern India, Bangladesh and Nepal. Hamilton's type locality was ponds in northern Bengal, and the species is broadly distributed across the lowland wetlands of this system. Its range spans slow-flowing streams, irrigation ditches, roadside ponds, beel wetlands and seasonally flooded rice paddies — calm, often heavily vegetated waters in the warm, humid plains.

SeriouslyFish gives water parameters of 64–75 °F, pH 6.0–8.0 and hardness 36–215 ppm, a range reflecting the species' tolerance of the wide variation found across the Gangetic lowlands through wet and dry seasons. This is not a hill-stream fish: it occupies still to gently flowing warm waters, often in dense aggregations near the surface among floating or emergent vegetation where it can intercept insects falling onto or rising through the water film.

Feeding

Laubuka laubuca is a surface-orientated micropredator. Its steeply upturned mouth and compressed, buoyant body plan are clear adaptations to feeding at the air–water interface. In the wild it takes small invertebrates — particularly aquatic and terrestrial insects, small crustaceans and other zooplankton — from the surface and the upper water column.

In the aquarium the species adapts well to prepared foods, but its preference for surface feeding means it responds best to floating items. Live and frozen foods — Daphnia, Artemia nauplii and adults, small bloodworms — are particularly relished and help maintain body condition and reproductive readiness. Because it feeds primarily in the top third of the water, it poses little competition to mid- and bottom-water species in a community setup.

Mating

Laubuka laubuca is an egg-scattering, non-guarding spawner. There is no pair bond, no nest construction and no parental investment beyond the act of spawning itself. When a group is in condition, males pursue gravid females with persistent chasing, pressing alongside the female as both fish move through vegetation or across open water near the surface. Eggs and milt are released simultaneously during these brief driving chases.

Spawning in the wild is presumably seasonal, tied to the warming and flooding that accompany the South Asian monsoon, when newly inundated, shallow, vegetation-rich margins become available as spawning habitat. In aquarium conditions, conditioning with live foods and a modest temperature rise can trigger spawning at any time of year.

Breeding

Breeding Laubuka laubuca follows the standard danionin pattern. A small group — ideally two males to one female — is conditioned on live and frozen foods for a week or two, then transferred to a separate spawning vessel with fine-leaved plants, Java moss or a mesh grid over the base to protect eggs from the adults. The fish are egg-scatterers that produce semi-adhesive eggs and will consume both eggs and fry if left in the tank after spawning.

SeriouslyFish records batches of roughly 30 eggs with an incubation period of approximately 24 hours at tropical temperatures. Larvae become free-swimming within a few days and can be started on infusoria or commercial first-fry foods, graduating to newly hatched brine shrimp as they grow. Adults should be removed promptly after spawning. Growth is moderate and the species reaches sexual maturity within several months under good conditions.

In the aquarium

Laubuka laubuca is an elegant and underappreciated surface shoaler that suits a community of similarly sized, peaceful fishes. It is best kept in groups of six or more, which distribute the natural chasing behaviour across the school and prevent any individual from being harassed. Its preference for the surface and upper water column leaves the mid and lower zones free for other species.

A longer tank (23.5 in minimum, 35.5 in preferable) with a secure lid — the species is a capable jumper — fits the fish well. Water should be warm, 68–75 °F, with a broadly neutral to slightly acidic pH. Hardness tolerance is wide (36–215 ppm). Gentle filtration and moderate planting, leaving open water at the surface, suits its lifestyle. It is not a demanding fish, but it does not thrive in cold rooms or heavily crowded, turbulent setups.

Conservation

Laubuka laubuca has not been formally assessed by the IUCN Red List — a gap common to many widespread South Asian cyprinids that are well known in the aquarium trade but have not yet been the subject of a formal conservation evaluation. Its broad distribution across the Ganges–Brahmaputra system, tolerance of disturbed and agricultural habitats such as rice paddies and irrigation ditches, and continued abundance in parts of its range suggest it is not immediately threatened at the species level.

The Gangetic plain nonetheless faces severe anthropogenic pressure: agricultural runoff, pesticide use, wetland conversion, water extraction and pollution from rapidly expanding urban areas all degrade the slow-water habitats this species depends on. Trade specimens are generally wild-caught rather than commercially farmed, although captive breeding is straightforward. A formal IUCN assessment would provide a more reliable picture of long-term trends.
