Taxonomy & naming
Danio flagrans was described by Sven O. Kullander in 2012, in the paper 'Description of Danio flagrans, and redescription of D. choprae, two closely related species from the Ayeyarwaddy River drainage in northern Myanmar,' published in Ichthyological Exploration of Freshwaters (23(3): 245–262). The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, the authority for valid names) records the valid combination as Danio flagrans Kullander, 2012.
The species belongs to the true danio assemblage within the genus Danio, a large and taxonomically active group of slim, horizontally patterned schooling cyprinids distributed across South and Southeast Asia. Several of Danio flagrans's nearest relatives have at times been placed in the genus Celestichthys — the Seriously Fish profile uses the former combination Celestichthys flagrans — but the current Catalog of Fishes places the species in Danio, the combination followed here.
Danio flagrans was separated from the similar D. choprae on the basis of meristic, morphometric and molecular characters: flagrans has longer barbels, a longer caudal peduncle, a shorter anal-fin base, more caudal vertebrae, fewer anal-fin rays, a short rather than absent lateral line, a distinctive colour pattern, and measurable mitochondrial DNA differences. The epithet flagrans is Latin for 'glowing' or 'blazing,' a reference to the brilliant red-orange and iridescent blue colouration of live specimens.
Morphology
Danio flagrans is a small, slender, laterally compressed cyprinid with a maximum recorded standard length of approximately 1.5 in (FishBase: 1–1.5 in SL), making it one of the more diminutive members of its genus. The body plan is typical of the true danios: an elongate, torpedo-shaped profile, a slightly upturned mouth, and a pair of fine maxillary barbels that are notably longer than in D. choprae.
Live colouration is striking. A broad band of vivid reddish-orange to copper runs along the midflank from behind the pectoral fin to the caudal peduncle, bordered above and below by lines of iridescent blue or blue-green. The caudal peduncle is proportionally longer than in D. choprae, a key distinguishing character alongside the reduced anal-fin ray count. The overall impression in a school is of glowing, jewel-like fish that more than earn the common name Northern Glowlight Danio.
Sexual dimorphism is moderate: females become visibly deeper-bodied and more rounded in the abdomen when gravid, while males remain slimmer and tend to show brighter, more saturated colour in peak condition. Both sexes carry the long barbels that are a defining feature of the species.
Habitat
Danio flagrans is endemic to a small number of hill streams in the Mali Hka river drainage of the upper Ayeyarwaddy system, in Putao district, Kachin State, northern Myanmar — one of the most remote and species-rich corners of mainland Southeast Asia. The type locality is the Nan Hto Chaung, a small tributary typical of the region. The species has not been confirmed from any other drainage.
Its native streams are small, cool, fast-flowing watercourses over gravel and rocky substrates, shaded by dense riparian and montane forest. Field data from collected specimens record water temperatures as low as 62 °F, a pH of approximately 8.2, and conductivity of 93 μS·cm⁻¹ — cool, relatively clear and moderately mineralised water, quite unlike the soft acidic blackwater sometimes associated with Southeast Asian danios. Dense surrounding vegetation contributes leaf litter, terrestrial invertebrates and shading to the stream environment.
These conditions place D. flagrans firmly among the cool-stream danios of northern Myanmar and adjacent regions, more akin ecologically to a subtropical hill-stream cyprinid than to a lowland tropical species. Replicating these conditions — cool, well-oxygenated, moderately mineralised water with moderate flow — is essential for long-term success in the aquarium.
Feeding
In its native hill streams Danio flagrans feeds primarily on insects and invertebrate larvae falling onto or near the water surface, supplemented by whatever aquatic invertebrates the current delivers. This insectivore-biased diet is consistent with its upturned mouth and its active, surface-oriented behaviour in the water column.
In the aquarium the species is undemanding and accepts a wide range of prepared foods, including small flake and micro-pellets. However, condition and colour are noticeably enhanced by regular offerings of live and frozen supplements — bloodworm, Daphnia and Artemia nauplii replicate the invertebrate-rich diet of the wild and promote the full expression of the species's vivid red-orange and iridescent blue tones. Feeding at or near the surface suits the fish's natural foraging posture.
Mating
Danio flagrans is an egg-scattering, non-guarding spawner — the reproductive strategy universal among true danios. There is no pair bond, no nest construction, and no parental care of any kind. Courtship consists of persistent pursuit by one or more males of a gravid female through the water column and among plants or submerged structure, culminating in brief close proximity as eggs and milt are released simultaneously.
In a well-maintained group, dominant males court actively and may nip at subordinate males or adjacent tankmates during the spawning season. The eggs are weakly adhesive and may settle on plants, moss, fine-grained substrate or gravel. Adults will consume eggs they encounter almost immediately, so any deliberate breeding programme requires separating the spawn from the parents.
Breeding
Breeding Danio flagrans in captivity follows the standard egg-scatterer protocol. A shallow, well-planted spawning tank — or a bare tank fitted with a fine mesh platform or marble substrate so eggs fall out of the parents' reach — is set up with cool, well-oxygenated, slightly acidic to neutral water (pH 6.0–7.0) at the lower end of the species's temperature range (61–68 °F). A small group of well-conditioned adults, ideally with slightly more males than females, is introduced and spawning typically follows at dawn.
Incubation takes approximately 72 hours at the cooler temperatures appropriate for this species. After spawning the adults are removed promptly to prevent egg predation. The larvae become free-swimming a few days after hatching and initially require infusoria or commercial fry foods of equivalent particle size, graduating to newly hatched brine shrimp nauplii and powdered flake as they grow. Because this species hails from remote hill streams and is not as commonly captive-bred as some of its congeners, healthy broodstock sourced from reputable suppliers are worth the effort of establishing a breeding colony.
In the aquarium
The Northern Glowlight Danio is a peaceful, active schooling fish best kept in groups of at least eight to ten specimens, ideally more, in a well-filtered aquarium that provides moderate to good water movement and high oxygen levels. Its cool-water requirements (61–75 °F) are the most important husbandry consideration: this is not a fish that thrives in a standard tropical community tank set to 79–82 °F. A dedicated cool-water setup, or one shared with other montane Asian species of similar requirements, is preferable.
Tank dimensions should prioritise length over height, giving the school room for the fast, restless horizontal movement typical of the genus. A planted aquarium with patches of fine-leaved plants, gravel or small-pebble substrate, and moderate filtration-driven current replicates the feel of a hill stream. Water chemistry need not be highly acidic — the type-locality data suggest moderate mineralisation and near-neutral to slightly alkaline pH — though Seriously Fish recommends maintaining pH between 6.0 and 7.0 in captivity for optimal colour and condition.
Dominant males may exhibit mild intraspecific nipping; a large enough group dilutes this behaviour across the school. Compatible tankmates include other cool-water species of similar size and temperament. Due to its limited range and relative rarity in the trade, specimens should be obtained from reputable sources to avoid contributing pressure on wild populations.
Conservation
Danio flagrans is assessed as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List. Despite being restricted to a small number of streams in a single river drainage in northern Myanmar, the remote and largely inaccessible nature of its Kachin State habitat means the IUCN recognises no major identified threats to the species at the time of assessment.
Nevertheless, its very limited range — apparently endemic to the Mali Hka drainage around Putao — makes it inherently vulnerable to any localised disturbance. The Kachin region has experienced intermittent armed conflict and increased extraction pressure on natural resources in recent decades. Broader threats to freshwater biodiversity in upland Myanmar include deforestation, sedimentation of hill streams, mining, and agricultural expansion into previously forested catchments. The species is not believed to be under significant collection pressure from the aquarium trade, though its desirability as a small, vivid schooling fish means vigilance is warranted if demand were to increase. Captive populations in the hobby represent a useful precautionary reserve for a species known from so small a geographic area.
