Taxonomy & naming
Pangio signicauda was formally described by Ralf Britz and John Maclaine in 2007 in their review of eel-loaches of the genus Pangio from Myanmar. The species belongs to the P. anguillaris group, a cluster of vermiform loaches from mainland Southeast Asia that share an elongate body, reduced scalation, and high vertebral counts; signicauda is distinguished from its close relatives by a unique colour pattern on the caudal region and by meristic data from the original description.
The genus Pangio, family Cobitidae, was previously known under the synonym Acanthophthalmus — a name still occasionally encountered in older aquarium literature and trade catalogues. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) treats Pangio as the valid genus, and the current combination Pangio signicauda is used here. No subspecies are recognised.
Morphology
Pangio signicauda has the hallmark body plan of a kuhli loach: extremely elongate and vermiform, laterally compressed, with a small pointed head and a body that tapers gradually toward the tail. The skin is near-scaleless — scales are present but minute and deeply embedded, giving the fish an effectively naked appearance to the touch. Comparative morphometric data for the genus indicate a body depth of roughly 6.5–9.3% of standard length and a relatively slender caudal peduncle, consistent with the eel-like profile of the anguillaris group.
The colour pattern on the tail region is the key character distinguishing signicauda from congeners, as noted in the original description, but detailed colour notes for living specimens are not widely published. Like other Pangio, this species bears the erectile suborbital spine characteristic of cobitid loaches — a sharp spine that can be erected defensively and easily snags nets or injures a careless hand during handling.
Habitat
The type locality is the Ayeyarwaddy (Irrawaddy) drainage of northern Myanmar, placing Pangio signicauda in the freshwater river systems of mainland Southeast Asia. The Ayeyarwaddy and its tributaries drain a large part of Myanmar through lowland floodplains and into foothills, and stream reaches inhabited by Pangio are typically warm, soft, and mildly acidic, flowing over fine sediment with leaf litter and riparian cover.
Kuhli loaches of the genus Pangio are associated with slow to moderately flowing water over fine sandy or silty substrate, often shaded by dense vegetation. They use the substrate itself as cover, diving into loose sand or hiding beneath fallen leaves and wood. The water chemistry is typically soft and slightly acid, reflecting the geology of Sundaland and the heavily leached soils of Southeast Asian forest streams.
Feeding
Pangio signicauda is a micro-omnivore and substrate-sifter. Like other kuhli loaches it forages at night, working through soft substrate to locate small invertebrates — insect larvae, worms, tiny crustaceans, and similar benthic prey — supplemented by detritus and organic matter in the substrate.
In the aquarium, sinking foods are essential: sinking pellets, micro-wafers, frozen and live bloodworm, Tubifex and Daphnia are all taken. Because this species is nocturnal and easily outcompeted at the surface by diurnal tank-mates, the most reliable way to ensure it is fed is to add food after lights-out. Underfed individuals are not always obvious — the fish hides by day — so consistent evening feeding is good husbandry practice.
Mating
Sexual dimorphism in Pangio signicauda has not been formally described. In related kuhli loaches, mature females are generally plumper and deeper-bodied than males when gravid, and this is likely to hold for signicauda, but the difference is subtle and difficult to judge in the slender, elongate body plan typical of the anguillaris group. The sexes are otherwise very alike in coloration and fin shape.
As a narrow-range species with limited aquarium presence, the reproductive biology of P. signicauda in the wild is essentially undocumented. Spawning triggers in closely related kuhli loaches are thought to involve seasonal changes in water temperature, rainfall cues, and water chemistry — factors difficult to reliably replicate in captivity.
Breeding
Pangio signicauda is not bred in the home aquarium, and no captive-breeding records have been published. The kuhli loach group as a whole is only very rarely spawned in aquaria; the few reported spawnings involve fish scattering small, greenish, adhesive eggs among the roots of floating plants near the water surface, with no parental care of any kind. Eggs and fry receive no attention from the adults.
The species reaches sexual maturity slowly, the exact timeline not being published for this taxon. Any specimens in the aquarium trade are almost certainly wild-collected. Keepers should not expect to breed this species under normal aquarium conditions.
In the aquarium
Pangio signicauda is an uncommon species in the aquarium trade but can be kept by the same approach that works for other kuhli loaches. Fine, soft sand substrate is mandatory — this is a burrowing fish and sharp gravel or coarse substrate damages the unprotected skin and prevents natural behaviour. Cover in the form of leaf litter, smooth rocks, wood, and hollow tubes or PVC pipe gives the fish the daytime retreats it requires; a well-covered tank also reduces stress.
Kuhli loaches are social and do better in groups than alone; a small group of three to six individuals will be more active and more visible than a single specimen hiding indefinitely. Tank size should be appropriate to the adult length: a 23.5 in tank is a workable minimum for a small group. Temperature should be kept warm (around 75–81 °F), pH soft to neutral (6.0–7.5), and water quality consistently good — like other near-scaleless loaches, Pangio is sensitive to ammonia and nitrite spikes.
Medication sensitivity is a real concern. Near-scaleless fish absorb treatments readily, and Pangio is sensitive to copper-based medications and to full-strength doses of many standard treatments. If disease treatment is necessary, use half-doses of copper-free products and monitor closely. Ich (white-spot) can be a particular risk with new specimens; treat early but cautiously.
Conservation
Pangio signicauda has not been evaluated by the IUCN Red List and carries no formal conservation status. Its known range is restricted to the Ayeyarwaddy drainage of northern Myanmar — a geographically limited distribution that, combined with very sparse documentation in the scientific and hobbyist literature, makes it difficult to assess population size or trend.
The Ayeyarwaddy basin has experienced increasing anthropogenic pressure from deforestation, agricultural expansion, and infrastructure development. As a small, substrate-dependent loach likely associated with clean, fine-sediment stream habitats, P. signicauda may be sensitive to sedimentation, riparian degradation, and changes in water quality. Any trade specimens are almost certainly wild-collected, as captive breeding is not established for this species; the scale of that collection is unknown but thought to be very limited given the species' rarity in commerce.
