Taxonomy & naming
Devario fangae was formally described by Sven O. Kullander in 2017, the account published in Zootaxa (volume 4227, issue 3, page 547). Specimens were taken from small streams draining to the Mali Hka River, a tributary of the Ayeyarwaddy (Irrawaddy), in Putao, the northernmost district of Kachin State, Myanmar. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) recognises the valid combination as Devario fangae Kullander, 2017.
Within the genus Devario — the giant danios, a group of moderately large, active danionin cyprinids distributed across South and Southeast Asia — D. fangae is most similar to D. browni and D. kakhienensis, both from the wider Ayeyarwaddy drainage of Myanmar. It is distinguished from both by its wider and more prominent dark mid-lateral stripe. No subspecies or synonyms are currently listed.
The species epithet honours Fang Fang (1962–2010), a Chinese ichthyologist who collected the holotype specimens during fieldwork in northern Myanmar and recognised the fish as undescribed, but did not live to see the formal description published. Kullander's dedication acknowledges her contribution to the discovery of this fish.
Morphology
Devario fangae is a slender, fusiform cyprinid in the typical Devario mould. FishBase records a maximum standard length of 2.5 in in males and 2.5 in in females, placing it in the smaller end of the genus. The body is laterally compressed with a pointed snout and an upturned mouth suited to surface or mid-water feeding in fast current.
The most diagnostic feature is the dark mid-lateral stripe, which runs horizontally from behind the gill cover to the caudal peduncle and is conspicuously wider than the corresponding stripe in D. browni and D. kakhienensis. Fin ray counts are informative: the dorsal fin carries 12–14 soft rays and the anal fin also 12–14, in the range typical for medium-sized Devario. Colouration of the flanks likely shows the pale and dark horizontal banding common to the genus, though detailed live colouration data are sparse for this recently described species.
Females attain a slightly greater maximum length than males, a pattern consistent with other Devario species, and are likely deeper-bodied when gravid.
Habitat
Devario fangae is known only from the Mali Hka River system in Putao district, Kachin State, extreme northern Myanmar. The Mali Hka is a major headwater tributary of the Ayeyarwaddy, draining the foothills of the eastern Himalayas and Hengduan ranges in one of the most topographically and biologically rich — and least ornithologically and ichthyologically surveyed — parts of mainland Southeast Asia.
FishBase characterises the habitat as small hillstreams with fast current, shallow water (typically less than 2 ft depth), and clear water flowing over substrates of gravel, rocks and sand. This profile matches a fast, well-oxygenated, cool hill-stream environment rather than the warmer, slower lowland rivers occupied by many of the more familiar tropical danios. Water chemistry in such high-elevation northern Myanmar streams tends toward soft, near-neutral conditions, though no detailed physico-chemical data are available for the precise collection localities.
The species' restriction to a single drainage system in a remote, poorly sampled region means its full distribution may be somewhat underestimated, but it is unlikely to range widely given the geographic isolation of the Putao area and the clear basin boundaries formed by the surrounding mountain ridges.
Feeding
No dedicated dietary studies have been published for Devario fangae. Its ecological setting — fast, clear hill streams over gravel and rock in a montane region — and its morphology (active fusiform body, upturned mouth) suggest a feeding strategy similar to other small Devario: an opportunistic insectivore and micropredator that takes aquatic and terrestrial invertebrates, insect larvae and surface-drifting prey from the water column and surface film.
In the aquarium, comparable hillstream danionins accept a wide range of standard small foods: high-quality flake or micro-pellets provide a daily base, with live and frozen foods such as daphnia, bloodworm and brine shrimp likely bringing out best condition and colouration. As an active mid-to-surface swimmer it feeds readily and competitively.
Mating
Devario fangae has not been bred in captivity in any documented account, and no field observations of its reproductive behaviour are on record. Based on the biology of the genus, it is expected to be an egg-scattering, non-guarding spawner in the manner of all Devario species studied to date. In the wild, spawning is likely cued by seasonal changes in water temperature, flow and day-length that characterise the monsoon-influenced hill streams of northern Myanmar.
Courtship in Devario typically involves a driving male pursuing a gravid female persistently through vegetation or over the substrate, the pair making rapid side-by-side contact as eggs and milt are released together. There is no pair bond, no territory, and no nest; the spawning act is brief and repeated. Adults take no interest in the eggs after release and will consume them if they encounter them.
Breeding
No captive breeding record for Devario fangae is known, and the species is rare in the ornamental trade. By analogy with closely related Devario species kept and bred by hobbyists, the likely approach would follow the standard hillstream danionin protocol: a shallow, well-oxygenated breeding tank with a fine-mesh or marbles-over-gravel bottom to protect eggs from the adults, cool and clear water reflecting the species' highland origin, and a well-conditioned group of adults fed on live and frozen foods before spawning.
Adhesive or weakly adhesive eggs would be scattered over the substrate or among fine-leaved plants, then fall into protected spaces. Adults should be removed after spawning. At cool hillstream temperatures the eggs would likely take two to four days to hatch, with larvae becoming free-swimming within a few days and accepting infusoria or commercial fry food before graduating to newly hatched brine shrimp. No parental care of any kind is expected at any stage.
In the aquarium
Devario fangae is not an established aquarium fish; no records of it in the ornamental trade or in hobbyist collections appear in the literature consulted. Its remote origin in Putao district — among the most inaccessible parts of Myanmar — means wild-caught specimens are exceptionally unlikely to reach the trade through normal channels.
Were it to become available, its requirements would parallel those of other highland Devario from similar latitudes: a spacious, well-filtered tank with strong current and high dissolved oxygen, cool water in the range of perhaps 64–75 °F reflecting a montane environment, a soft-to-neutral water chemistry, and an active shoal of at least six to maintain natural behaviour. Its modest size (around 2.5 in) would make it manageable, but its origin in pristine, fast highland water suggests it would be sensitive to low oxygen levels, elevated temperatures and water quality lapses. Data are too sparse to give more precise guidance.
Conservation
Devario fangae has not been assessed by the IUCN Red List; it carries Not Evaluated status, reflecting both its very recent description (2017) and the general under-assessment of the extraordinarily rich but poorly known ichthyofauna of northern Myanmar.
The species' apparent restriction to a single river system in Putao district gives it a narrow range by default, though the remoteness of its range has historically provided some de facto protection. The broader Kachin region faces pressures that affect many freshwater species in mainland Southeast Asia: hydropower development along Ayeyarwaddy tributaries, artisanal and small-scale mining, and deforestation in river catchments, all of which degrade the clear, fast, sediment-free hillstream conditions on which species like D. fangae depend. Without a formal IUCN assessment and targeted surveys to establish its true range and population status, the conservation outlook for this species cannot be properly evaluated.
