Taxonomy & naming
Pangio lumbriciformis was described by Ralf Britz and John Maclaine in 2007, as part of a revision of the eel-loaches of Myanmar. It belongs to the family Cobitidae, the true loaches, and within it to the genus Pangio — the kuhli loaches of South and Southeast Asia. The species is placed in the P. anguillaris species group, characterised by a high vertebral count (54–56 in P. lumbriciformis), an elongated vermiform body, and a reduced or nearly absent colour pattern that distinguishes the group from the more boldly banded Pangio such as P. kuhlii.
The genus Pangio was formerly known to the hobby as Acanthophthalmus, a name coined to reflect the suborbital spine beneath each eye. That name is now a junior synonym; the Catalog of Fishes accepts Pangio as the valid genus. Acanthophthalmus lumbriciformis is therefore an unavailable combination; the correct name is Pangio lumbriciformis Britz & Maclaine, 2007.
Morphology
Pangio lumbriciformis is an eel-like, laterally compressed loach reaching a maximum recorded standard length of 2 in. Like all members of the P. anguillaris group it has a vermiform, near-cylindrical body — the specific epithet lumbriciformis (earthworm-shaped) names this precisely. The body is largely unmarked or very faintly patterned, setting it apart from more strongly banded Pangio species; characteristic dark saddle-like dorsal marks and a double spot at the caudal base are noted as diagnostic features.
The dorsal fin has 10 soft rays and the anal fin has 8; the high vertebral count (54–56) is one of the characters separating the P. anguillaris group from other Pangio. The skin is near-scaleless, giving the fish a smooth, naked appearance and making it sensitive to coarse substrates and to copper-based medications. A small erectile suborbital spine is present beneath each eye, as in other cobitids, but it is far less prominent than in the botiid loaches.
Barbels around the mouth assist in detecting food items in soft substrate; they can be abraded by sharp gravel, so fine sand is the correct substrate for this group.
Habitat
Pangio lumbriciformis is known from the Ayeyarwaddy drainage of northern Myanmar, where it may be an endemic confined to that basin. The Ayeyarwaddy (Irrawaddy) is a large river system draining the mountains of northern Myanmar and flowing south to the Andaman Sea; the loach presumably inhabits smaller tributaries, forest streams, or marginal habitats rather than the main channel.
Related Pangio species across South and Southeast Asia occupy soft-bottomed, lowland and foothill fresh waters: shaded forest streams and slow-moving channels with fine sand or muddy substrate, leaf litter, submerged roots and dense riparian vegetation. The water is typically warm, soft, and slightly to moderately acidic, with low to gentle flow. P. lumbriciformis has not been surveyed in detail, so its precise microhabitat requirements within the Ayeyarwaddy drainage are not well documented, but there is no reason to expect it to differ markedly from close relatives.
Feeding
Like all kuhli loaches, Pangio lumbriciformis is a micro-omnivore and substrate forager. It works the bottom at night, using its sensitive barbels to detect small invertebrates buried in or living on the sediment — insect larvae, small worms, tiny crustaceans and similar soft-bodied prey. It is not a surface or mid-water feeder.
In captivity, related Pangio species accept sinking foods readily: small-diameter sinking pellets, mini wafers, bloodworm and tubifex (frozen or live), and finely chopped fresh foods offered at or after lights-out. Because kuhli loaches are nocturnal and easily displaced from food by more active tankmates, they are prone to being underfed in a community aquarium. Feeding a sinking ration after the lights go off ensures the loach gets its share.
Mating
Nothing is documented about the reproductive behaviour of Pangio lumbriciformis specifically. In related kuhli loaches the sexes are difficult to distinguish externally; ripe females become noticeably plumper and may show a greenish tint through the body wall when laden with eggs, but outside the breeding season males and females look very similar in body shape and markings.
Kuhli loaches are egg-scatterers. In nature, spawning is thought to be linked to the monsoon season and rising water levels, which trigger conditioning in the fish and likely bring them into shallow, vegetated marginal water. The details for P. lumbriciformis are entirely unknown; the species has not been studied in the field or maintained in any documented aquarium breeding programme.
Breeding
Pangio lumbriciformis has not been bred in captivity, and there are no published reports of successful spawning. This is consistent with the broader picture for kuhli loaches: Pangio species are very rarely bred in home aquaria, and the group as a whole is poorly represented in the hobby even where better-known species such as P. kuhlii are concerned.
When kuhli loaches do spawn, they are egg-scatterers with no parental care. Eggs are reported to be small, greenish, and adhesive, scattered among floating plant roots or dense fine-leaved vegetation at the water surface; the adults pay no attention to eggs or fry. No seasonal trigger or hormone protocol has been described for P. lumbriciformis. For practical purposes, a keeper should expect no breeding: the trade in kuhli loaches is supplied by wild-collected fish, and P. lumbriciformis is in any case not currently established in the trade.
In the aquarium
Pangio lumbriciformis is not an established aquarium species; it has not appeared in the ornamental trade in any documented way, and most keepers will encounter it only through the scientific literature. The information below applies by close analogy with related Pangio species and general kuhli-loach care.
Any Pangio requires a soft fine-sand substrate — coarse gravel or sharp substrate damages the barbels and abrades the near-scaleless skin, both of which predispose the fish to infection. Dense cover (caves, driftwood, tight plantings, PVC tubes) is essential: kuhli loaches are secretive and spend most daylight hours hidden, emerging to forage after dark. They are peaceful and fully social; keeping a group of five or more individuals gives them security and encourages natural foraging behaviour — a lone kuhli often refuses to emerge at all.
Being near-scaleless, all Pangio absorb medications directly through the skin and are sensitive to copper and to standard full-dose treatments. They are prone to ich and velvet, yet may be the first fatality in an aggressive dosing regime. Half-dose treatments with copper-free, formalin-free products are advisable. Water should be warm (75–86 °F), soft, and slightly acidic, with gentle to moderate filtration and good oxygenation but without strong turbulent flow. Feed sinking foods after lights-out and check that smaller fish are not outcompeted by larger tankmates.
If P. lumbriciformis enters the trade — possible given growing interest in Myanmar's loach fauna — it should be treated exactly as a kuhli loach: soft sand, cover, a group of at least five, nocturnal feeding, and careful medication.
Conservation
Pangio lumbriciformis is assessed as Data Deficient on the IUCN Red List (2022 assessment). The DD listing reflects a genuine lack of information: the species has a narrow, apparently restricted range in the Ayeyarwaddy drainage of northern Myanmar, and it may be endemic to that basin, but the extent of its distribution, population size, and population trends are unknown.
Myanmar's freshwater fish are among the least surveyed in Southeast Asia, and many endemics of the Ayeyarwaddy system are effectively data-deficient simply because surveys have been infrequent or geographically limited. The pressures facing Myanmar's freshwater habitats — agricultural encroachment, sedimentation, small-scale gold mining, and the ongoing construction of dams on the Ayeyarwaddy and its tributaries — are real and documented at the landscape level, even if their specific impact on P. lumbriciformis is not. Given the narrow range and the poorly documented collection record, a precautionary approach is warranted: the species could be genuinely threatened without the data to show it. As the aquarium trade does not currently rely on this species, collection pressure is not an identified concern at present.
