Taxonomy & naming
Devario acuticephala was described by Sunder Lal Hora in 1921 from a type locality recorded as "Ukjhang sang Road, 1 mile from Yaribuk, Manipur, India" — a site within the hill-stream network of the Manipur basin in northeastern India. Hora placed the species in the subgenus Brachydanio of the genus Danio, reflecting the taxonomic conventions of the early twentieth century, and the GBIF record carries the original combination Danio (Brachydanio) acuticephala Hora, 1921. Subsequent revisions of the danio complex recognised Devario as a distinct genus encompassing the larger-bodied, often boldly striped species of South and Southeast Asia, and acuticephala was transferred accordingly. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) records the valid combination as Devario acuticephala (Hora, 1921), with the parenthetical authority marking the move out of Danio.
The specific epithet acuticephala combines the Latin acutus (sharp, pointed) with cephala (from the Greek kephalē, head), likely referring to the narrow, sharply tapered snout that distinguishes this species within Devario. The common name Manipur danio is straightforward and widely used, reflecting both the type locality and the species' restricted geographical range.
Morphology
Devario acuticephala is a small fish, reaching approximately 1.5 in standard length according to Seriously Fish — modest even by danio standards. The body is slim and laterally compressed, with the pointed, narrow snout that inspired its epithet. A dark, well-defined line runs along each flank, and the rear half of the body and the dorsal surface carry reddish-orange coloration, giving the fish a distinctly bicoloured appearance in good light. The belly is paler and silvery.
In keeping with most Devario, it bears a pair of maxillary barbels, though these are relatively short. The fins are clear to faintly tinted. Little detailed meristic or osteological data is widely published for this species, reflecting its obscurity in the literature relative to the commoner Devario and Danio species, but its overall form is consistent with the slim, fast-water build typical of the genus.
Habitat
The Manipur danio inhabits hill streams and ponds within the Manipur basin, including the Iril and Khuga drainages, and the Dikhu watershed in the Nagaland hills — all part of the Chindwin–Irrawaddy headwater system of northeastern India. Seriously Fish characterises its preferred environment as hill streams with moderate water flow and high dissolved oxygen, which fits the character of well-shaded, fast-running highland streams in this region.
The recorded water parameters from the hobby literature indicate a fish of cool, relatively soft, mildly acidic to neutral water: temperatures of 61–72 °F, pH 6.0–7.0, and hardness in the range of 18–143 ppm. The lower end of that temperature band places it firmly among the cool-water, montane stream fishes rather than the lowland tropicals, suggesting that the streams of Manipur and Nagaland at moderate elevation — often shaded by dense forest and fed by cold spring and monsoon runoff — are its core habitat. FishBase records it as benthopelagic, occupying mid-water to bottom positions in the stream profile.
Feeding
Devario acuticephala is insectivorous, as noted by Seriously Fish. In its native hill streams the diet would consist primarily of aquatic insect larvae — chironomids, ephemeropterans and other benthos — along with terrestrial insects and invertebrates that fall to the water surface, which are abundant in the forested stream margins of the Manipur hills. Its small mouth and slender body suit a fish that forages actively in the current and at the surface.
In the aquarium it accepts standard small live and frozen foods readily: daphnia, bloodworm, baby brine shrimp and similar invertebrate fare keep it in the best condition, though it will also take good-quality small flakes and micro-pellets. Feeding in the upper and mid water column is typical for Devario.
Mating
Devario acuticephala is an egg-scattering, non-guarding spawner in the typical danio mode, with no nest construction and no parental care of any kind. In the wild, spawning likely coincides with the pre-monsoon warming and rising water levels that flush nutrients into the hill streams of Manipur and Nagaland, triggering reproductive readiness across the local fish community.
Courtship follows the pattern common to Devario: an active male pursues a gravid female through vegetation or over the substrate, and the pair release eggs and milt in brief, close contact. Adults do not remain with the eggs after spawning and will consume any eggs they encounter.
Breeding
Seriously Fish records that Devario acuticephala will spawn in planted aquaria. The standard approach for danio-type egg-scatterers applies: a shallow, well-planted spawning tank with fine-leaved plants, Java moss or a substrate mesh to protect eggs from the adults, conditioned fish, and a modest rise in temperature toward the upper end of the species' range (around 68–72 °F) to simulate seasonal warmth.
Eggs are adhesive and scattered over plants and the substrate; adults must be removed promptly after spawning to prevent egg predation. Incubation time and larval development data are sparse for this species in the published hobby literature, but the general danio pattern of hatching within two to three days and free-swimming fry within a few more days is a reasonable guide. Initial foods for fry are infusoria or commercial fry powder, progressing rapidly to newly hatched brine shrimp nauplii.
In the aquarium
Devario acuticephala is an uncommon fish in the hobby, reflecting both its restricted natural range and its Vulnerable conservation status. When available it is best suited to a species aquarium or a community of similarly-sized, cool-water hill-stream fishes. Its preferred temperature range of 61–72 °F excludes most standard tropical community fishes and aligns it instead with other montane South Asian cyprinids.
A long, well-filtered aquarium with moderate to good current, high dissolved oxygen and a planted or open substrate suits this active, shoaling species. It should be kept in groups of at least six, as with most Devario. The relatively soft, mildly acidic to neutral water of its natural habitat (pH 6.0–7.0, low to moderate hardness) should be matched as closely as possible. Its small size — 1.5 in — means it can be housed in a tank of modest volume, but water quality must be maintained to the standard its clean, fast-water origins demand.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assessed Devario acuticephala as Vulnerable (VU) in 2010. The assessment noted a highly restricted range — fewer than 15,0 mi² — and records from only a handful of localities, all within Manipur and Nagaland in northeastern India. This endemic distribution makes the species acutely sensitive to any degradation of its limited habitat.
The primary threats are those facing hill-stream fauna across northeastern India generally: deforestation of the catchments that maintain cool, clear, well-oxygenated stream conditions; agricultural expansion and associated sedimentation and agrochemical pollution; and hydrological alteration from small dams and water extraction. Northeastern India is one of the planet's most biodiverse regions but also one of the most rapidly developing, and the narrow-range fish fauna of the Manipur and Nagaland highlands has attracted relatively little formal conservation attention compared with the region's larger mammals and birds. The species is not known to be held in significant numbers in captivity, so ex-situ backup is minimal.
