Taxonomy & naming
Devario aequipinnatus was described by John McClelland in 1839, and its valid name and authority — (McClelland, 1839) — are confirmed by the Catalogue of Life and GBIF. The parenthetical authority signals that the species has been moved from its original genus since description; it has at various times been placed in Danio and in Cyprinus before settling in Devario under revisions that separated the larger, deeper-bodied danionins from the smaller Danio core.
The genus Devario comprises large to medium-sized schooling cyprinids of South and Southeast Asia, distinguished from Danio by their greater body depth, larger size, and typically bolder horizontal colour bands. The species epithet aequipinnatus derives from Latin aequalis (equal) and pinnatus (finned), referring to the roughly symmetrical proportions of the dorsal and anal fins — an anatomical character noted by McClelland in the original description.
In older literature and much of the hobby trade the fish appears under the name Danio aequipinnatus, the combination used before Kottelat's revisions clarified the boundary between Danio and Devario. Both names remain common in aquarium guides, but Devario aequipinnatus is the current valid combination. The name "Malabar danio" reflects early material from the Malabar coast of south-western India; "Assamese danio" reflects its occurrence across north-eastern India into Assam and beyond.
Morphology
The giant danio is a robust, laterally compressed cyprinid with a noticeably deeper body than most of its relatives — stocky by danio standards, yet still built for speed. Total length can reach 6 in, making it one of the largest members of the danionin group commonly kept in aquaria. The profile is torpedo-shaped with a slightly upturned mouth, short barbels, and a forked caudal fin.
The colour pattern is the diagnostic feature: a series of vivid horizontal stripes run from behind the gill cover along the flanks to the caudal peduncle, typically rendered in alternating bands of brilliant blue or blue-green and gold or silver-yellow. The back is olive to greenish and the belly pale. The intensity of the blue is iridescent and shifts with viewing angle and lighting, appearing electric under a well-lit aquarium and softer in subdued light.
Sexual dimorphism is moderate and similar to other danios. Males are slimmer with a more intensely coloured and streamlined body; females are noticeably deeper-bellied, especially when gravid, and carry a rounder ventral profile. There are no significant differences in finnage between the sexes. No commercially significant ornamental strains or colour morphs comparable to the zebrafish's veil or leopard forms have established themselves in the trade.
Habitat
Devario aequipinnatus occupies a wide arc of South and Southeast Asia: across India from the Western Ghats north-eastward into Nepal, Assam and Bangladesh, and continuing through Myanmar into Indochina. A 2017 study confirmed its presence in the Karnafuli, Feni and Meghna river drainages of Bangladesh, where it was recorded in small highland forest streams in the Khagrachari district and around waterfalls such as Madobkundo and Shitakundo — fast-flowing, well-shaded, oxygen-rich habitats far from agricultural lowlands.
The species is characteristically rheophilic and a fish of the hill-stream zone. FishBase places it in streams up to roughly 984 ft elevation, in clear, shaded water over pebble and gravel substrate. It is a pelagic, schooling fish that moves through the water column rather than staying close to the bottom, often gathering in midwater and surface layers where currents concentrate food. Unlike lowland danios adapted to seasonally stagnant or turbid conditions, D. aequipinnatus requires high oxygen and dislikes still, warm or murky water.
Water conditions in these hill streams are typically soft to moderately hard, pH broadly neutral to slightly acidic, and on the cooler side of the tropical spectrum — FishBase gives an optimal range of 72–75 °F. These are not the blackwater peat swamps of Sundaland or the warm, slow rivers of the lowland plains; they are clear, fast, cool forest streams that stay well-oxygenated year-round.
Feeding
Devario aequipinnatus is an opportunistic omnivore with a bias toward small invertebrates and surface-available prey. Larval and juvenile fish are known to feed heavily on copepods and diatoms; adults in fast hill streams take aquatic insect larvae, small crustaceans and any terrestrial invertebrates that fall onto the water surface. The upturned mouth is consistent with surface and midwater feeding rather than benthic foraging.
In the aquarium the giant danio is unfussy and accepts all standard foods with enthusiasm. High-quality flakes and small floating pellets form a practical staple; the fish's condition and colour improve noticeably with regular offerings of live and frozen invertebrates such as daphnia, artemia, bloodworm and mosquito larvae — foods that mirror the stream invertebrates of its natural diet. Its size and speed mean it can easily outcompete smaller or slower tankmates at feeding time, so distribution of food across the tank surface matters in mixed-species setups.
Mating
Devario aequipinnatus is an egg-scattering, non-guarding spawner — the reproductive mode shared by the vast majority of danios and their relatives. There is no nest, no territory, no pair bond, and no parental care of any kind. Spawning is triggered by warmth, water changes and, in the wild, likely by the seasonal rise in food availability and stream flow associated with monsoon conditions.
A ripe female rounds out noticeably, and males in breeding condition become more intensely coloured and actively pursue gravid females through the water column and among vegetation. The spawning act is brief: a driving male presses alongside the female and the pair releases eggs and milt simultaneously into the current or among plant stems. The adhesive eggs scatter and settle among the gravel, fine-leaved plants or moss, where they are left entirely unattended — and are actively consumed by the adults themselves if they are not removed from the spawning tank.
Breeding
Giant danios are ready breeders in the aquarium and a classic choice for hobbyists progressing to egg-layer breeding for the first time. The standard method uses a separate shallow spawning tank fitted with a layer of fine-leaved plants or Java moss over a mesh or marble layer, so that eggs fall through and away from the adults. A group of well-conditioned fish — at least two males per female — is transferred to the spawning tank, and a partial water change with slightly warmer water often triggers spawning within hours or the following morning.
A ripe female can produce several hundred eggs in a session. Because adults eat eggs and fry without hesitation, the parents are removed promptly after spawning is complete. The eggs are small, adhesive and transparent; at 75–79 °F they hatch in roughly 24–36 hours, and the larvae become free-swimming within a few more days. First foods are infusoria or commercial fry food of the finest grade, followed rapidly by freshly hatched brine shrimp nauplii as the fry grow. Growth is fast and juveniles reach recognisable colouration within a few weeks. The species breeds readily enough that accidental spawning in a well-fed community tank is not uncommon.
In the aquarium
The giant danio is an active, hardy and visually striking schooling fish best suited to a spacious aquarium — its 6 in adult size and constant high-speed swimming demand significantly more room than the more familiar small danios. A tank of at least 39.5 in in length is the practical minimum for a proper group, and longer is always better; this is a fish that uses every centimetre of horizontal swimming space. A group of six or more is essential: kept in fewer numbers it loses the bold, flowing schooling behaviour that makes the species worth keeping, and individuals may become skittish or nippy.
The species prefers well-oxygenated, moderately fast water — a reasonable current from the filter outlet, supplemented if needed by a powerhead or airline, suits it well. Temperature of 72–79 °F (72–79 °F), pH 6.0–8.0 and soft to moderately hard water cover its natural range; it is more adaptable in practice than its hill-stream origins suggest, but it will not thrive in warm, still or oxygen-poor conditions. Decor can include smooth pebbles, open gravel and some fine-leaved planting, with clear midwater space for swimming.
Devario aequipinnatus is peaceful toward fish it cannot swallow and does well in communities of similarly sized, active species. Its speed means long-finned slow-movers such as angelfish or fancy gouramis are poor companions — the danios may harass or nip them. It is an accomplished jumper; a tight-fitting lid is essential. The species is long-lived for a small cyprinid and remains active and colourful well into adulthood in a well-maintained aquarium.
Conservation
Devario aequipinnatus is listed as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List, assessed in January 2010. Its wide distribution across a large swath of South and Southeast Asia — from India and Nepal through Bangladesh and Myanmar to Indochina — gives it a broad geographic buffer against localised threats, and it is not believed to be subject to significant trade pressure since it reproduces easily in captivity and is widely farm-bred.
Nevertheless, its dependence on clear, well-oxygenated hill streams makes it vulnerable to the pressures that affect that specific habitat type: deforestation of riparian zones that raises water temperature and increases sediment load, agricultural runoff and pesticide contamination, water extraction from small headwater streams, and catchment conversion that replaces shaded forest streams with open, degraded drainage channels. Documented records from Khagrachari and the hill stream forests of Bangladesh underscore its presence in fragile, localized sub-populations at the edges of its range, where habitat loss could have real local consequences even if the overall species status remains secure.
