Taxonomy & naming
Devario browni was originally described as Danio browni by Charles Tate Regan in 1907, from material collected in the Irrawaddy River drainage of northern Burma (now Myanmar). The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS), the authority for valid names, records the current combination as Devario browni (Regan, 1907), with the parenthetical authority reflecting the transfer from Regan's original placement in Danio.
Several subsequent names were synonymised with browni over the decades: Danio strigillifer Myers, 1924; Danio annandalei Chaudhuri, 1908; and Danio deyi Sen & Dey, 1985. A key 2022 revision of Devario in the Irrawaddy–Salween region resolved long-standing confusion: specimens from the Salween drainage that had been referred to D. browni were described as the separate species Devario ahlanderi, restricting D. browni to the Irrawaddy basin and clarifying the type locality as the upper Irrawaddy near Lashio, Shan State.
The genus Devario encompasses the larger danionins of South and Southeast Asia, sister to the smaller true danios of Danio. The two genera were historically conflated as "Danio" in older literature and aquarium trade use, and some older references will place this species as Danio browni.
Morphology
Devario browni is a moderately large danionin, reaching a maximum standard length of 3 in — firmly in the size range that earns its group the vernacular label "giant danios." The body plan is elongate and laterally compressed, with the streamlined profile characteristic of fish adapted to current.
Detailed colour and meristic data for this species are sparse in the published literature. Like other Devario, it is presumed to carry horizontal stripe patterning on the flanks, with a pattern of blue or silvery lateral bands and a darkened dorsal surface consistent with life in shaded, fast-flowing streams. The mouth is terminal to slightly upturned, suited to taking prey at or near the surface. Specific counts of fin rays, scale rows and vertebrae for the post-revision D. browni await comprehensive morphological redescription.
Habitat
Devario browni inhabits fast-flowing, shaded hill streams in the upper Irrawaddy River drainage, northern Myanmar. Its type locality is near Lashio in Shan State, a region of dissected upland terrain where streams run clear and cold over rocky and gravelly substrates, typically shaded by riparian forest. FishBase characterises it as benthopelagic.
These upland Irrawaddy tributaries are soft to moderately hard, near-neutral in pH, and highly oxygenated — conditions typical of streams fed by forested catchments at elevation. No specific temperature or pH data have been published for D. browni, but the cool, fast-flowing hill-stream setting distinguishes it sharply from lowland warmwater relatives. It is a schooling fish, almost certainly found in groups in open stream channels and among root tangles in shaded margins.
Feeding
FishBase assigns Devario browni a trophic level of 3.0, placing it as a low-level carnivore to omnivore. Its diet is reported to consist mainly of terrestrial insects — ants, flies and other invertebrates that fall to the surface of the stream — a feeding mode consistent with the upturned or terminal mouth and the surface-oriented behaviour typical of danionins.
In nature it likely supplements this surface-insect intake with aquatic invertebrates and small arthropods carried in current. In an aquarium context, allied species in Devario respond well to floating and sinking foods: quality flake and micropellets, enriched with live or frozen items such as daphnia, small bloodworm and fruit flies, closely replicate the terrestrial-insect bias of the wild diet.
Mating
Devario browni, in common with all danionins, is an egg-scattering, non-guarding spawner. There is no pair bond, no nest construction and no parental care of any kind. Spawning in wild stream populations is most likely cued by seasonal changes in water temperature and flow associated with the monsoon, which triggers movement into shallow, vegetated margins.
Courtship follows the typical danio pattern: a ready male drives a gravid female through vegetation or over substrate, pressing alongside her as eggs and milt are released simultaneously in brief bursts. The eggs — slightly adhesive — scatter among plants and gravel, and the adults give them no further attention, frequently consuming them if the opportunity arises.
Breeding
No published account of captive breeding of Devario browni appears in the available literature, and it remains rare to absent in the aquarium trade. By analogy with its closest relatives, including other Devario species, successful spawning would require cool, clean, well-oxygenated water with a moderate current, and a spawning medium of fine-leaved plants, Java moss or a gravel substrate.
A separate, shallow breeding tank is standard practice with danionins: the adults are removed after spawning to prevent egg predation, and the transparent eggs hatch in two to three days at cool to warm water temperatures. Larvae become free-swimming within a few days and take infusoria, then finely powdered fry food or newly hatched brine shrimp nauplii as first foods. Given the species' restricted range and Vulnerable status, responsible captive propagation would be a meaningful contribution.
In the aquarium
Devario browni is rarely encountered in the aquarium hobby, and trade specimens are uncommon outside specialist cichlid and danio circles with an interest in Myanmar fishes. As a schooling danionin it should be kept in groups of at least six, in a spacious tank with good filtration, strong oxygenation and a moderate current — conditions that reflect its fast-flowing hill-stream origins.
A longer tank with open swimming space in the upper and mid water column, planted sides and a dark substrate would suit it well. Water should be cool to warm (reflecting upland Irrawaddy conditions), soft to moderately hard and near-neutral in pH. Its carnivore-leaning diet is readily met with quality floating flake, small pellets, and live or frozen invertebrates. Given its scarcity, it is best kept as a species tank or with other robust, fast-water fishes of similar size.
Conservation
Devario browni is assessed as Vulnerable (VU) on the IUCN Red List. Its restricted distribution in the upper Irrawaddy basin — an area centred on northern Shan State, Myanmar — limits the buffering that a wider range would provide. The 2022 taxonomic revision further constrained the known range by excluding the Salween River population (now Devario ahlanderi), confirming that the true D. browni is an even narrower-range endemic than previously understood.
The principal threats are habitat degradation in the Irrawaddy headwaters: deforestation of riparian and upland catchments drives siltation and warming of cool hill streams, and agricultural encroachment reduces water quality. Northern Myanmar's uplands host exceptionally high freshwater fish diversity, much of it underdescribed, and the combination of political instability, limited protected-area coverage and ongoing land-use change poses a serious long-term risk to stream specialists like D. browni. FishBase notes high resilience for the species — suggesting recovery potential if pressures are reduced — but sustained habitat loss makes maintenance of that resilience uncertain.
