Devario coxi is a recently described giant danio endemic to the Cox's Bazar region of southeastern Bangladesh, known from the upper Matamuhury River drainage. Described in 2017 by Kullander, Rahman, Norén and Mollah on the basis of morphological and molecular evidence, it sits squarely within the Devario aequipinnatus species complex — a group of large, swift-water danios widespread across South and Southeast Asia — but is genetically and morphologically distinct enough from its relatives to warrant species status. As a single-locality endemic in a region under heavy agricultural and developmental pressure, it has received no formal conservation assessment, though its restricted range gives reason for concern.

Taxonomy & naming

Devario coxi was described in 2017 by Sven O. Kullander, M. Monirul Rahman, Michael Norén and M. Faridul Alam Mollah in a study of Devario diversity in Bangladesh, published in PLOS ONE. The species was separated from the widespread Devario aequipinnatus on the basis of mitochondrial COI sequence data (p-distance ~1.8%) and minor but consistent morphological differences, consistent with the pattern of recent or incipient speciation among danionins across the Bengal and Chittagong regions.

The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) is the authority for valid names in this group. Devario coxi belongs to the subfamily Danioninae of the family Cyprinidae (sensu lato) or Danionidae, depending on the classification followed. The genus Devario encompasses the large and active 'giant danios' of South and Southeast Asia, historically confused with Danio proper; Devario was reinstated as a valid genus distinct from Danio by Fang (2003) following work by several authors, and the Catalog of Fishes recognises D. coxi in Devario.

The species' closest relative appears to be D. aequipinnatus, the common giant danio, which ranges across northeastern India, Bangladesh, Nepal, Myanmar and much of Indochina. D. coxi represents a southeastern Bangladesh lineage geographically separated from that broader range.

Morphology

Devario coxi shares the general body plan of the giant danio group: an elongate, laterally compressed, fusiform body with a relatively large eye, a slightly upturned terminal mouth, and the fine barbels characteristic of many danionins. Size is in the typical Devario range of roughly 2–4 in standard length, consistent with the broader D. aequipinnatus complex from which it was segregated.

The minor morphological differences from D. aequipinnatus noted at description are consistent with geographic isolation and possible founder effects; the molecular divergence (~1.8% in COI) is the primary diagnostic character separating D. coxi from sympatric or para-allopatric congeners. Detailed meristic and morphometric data are published in the 2017 PLOS ONE description. No distinct or diagnostically unique colour pattern has been documented for D. coxi in the literature available, and the species has not been introduced to the aquarium trade in numbers sufficient to generate hobbyist descriptions.

Habitat

Devario coxi is known from the upper Matamuhury River drainage in the Cox's Bazar district of southeastern Bangladesh — a region of low hill ranges and river valleys draining south and southwest toward the Bay of Bengal. The type locality sits within the Chittagong Hill Tracts ecoregion, an area of relatively intact foothill streams by regional standards but one under increasing land-use pressure.

As a member of the D. aequipinnatus species complex, D. coxi is expected to occupy fast-flowing, well-oxygenated hill streams and river sections — the classic habitat for Devario throughout the region. These waters are typically clear to moderately turbid, cool relative to lowland plains water, soft to moderately hard, and near-neutral in pH. Specific water parameter data for D. coxi itself are not published, but the genus and the habitat type are well characterised. Data on seasonality, depth preference and microhabitat within the drainage remain sparse.

Feeding

No feeding observations specific to Devario coxi in the wild have been published. Like all Devario, it is expected to be a generalised omnivore and micropredator in the water column, taking small invertebrates including aquatic insect larvae, surface insects, small crustaceans and zooplankton, supplemented with algae and organic detritus. The upturned mouth typical of the genus suits surface and mid-water foraging in fast current.

In the aquarium, Devario species generally adapt readily to a varied diet including good-quality dried foods (flakes, small pellets) supplemented with live and frozen invertebrates such as bloodworm, Daphnia and brine shrimp. D. coxi, if it were to enter the aquarium trade, would be expected to behave similarly. Weekly partial water changes and strong filtration to maintain oxygen levels are important for keeping Devario in prime condition.

Mating

Devario coxi, like all members of the family Danionidae, is an egg-scattering, non-guarding spawner. There is no nest construction, no bubble nest, no mouthbrooding, and no parental care of any kind. Spawning in Devario is typically triggered by seasonal cues — rising temperatures and water levels associated with the monsoon — when fish move into shallow, vegetated marginal areas of streams and rivers.

Courtship follows the pattern shared across the danio clade: a driving male pursues a gravid female, pressing close as they move through vegetation or over substrate, and eggs and milt are released in brief bursts. No pair bond forms beyond the act of spawning. Adults will consume any eggs they encounter, so the scattered eggs depend on falling into inaccessible crevices or among dense plant roots for survival. No specific mating observations for D. coxi are published.

Breeding

Devario coxi has not been bred in captivity in documented numbers, and no aquarium breeding accounts appear in the available literature. Based on close relationship to the well-studied D. aequipinnatus complex, the breeding biology is expected to follow the standard Devario pattern: adhesive to weakly adhesive eggs scattered over fine-leaved plants, moss, submerged roots or gravel substrate; no parental care; eggs hatch within 24–48 hours at tropical temperatures; larvae are free-swimming within a few days and accept small live foods (infusoria, freshly hatched brine shrimp nauplii).

For any hobbyist attempting to breed D. coxi, the standard approach for giant danios applies: a dedicated shallow spawning tank with a mesh or marbles to protect eggs from adults, conditioning the pair on live and frozen foods, and a partial water change with slightly cooler water to simulate monsoon onset. As with all Devario, adults should be removed after spawning. Data on clutch size, larval development and juvenile growth for this species specifically are not published.

In the aquarium

Devario coxi is not an established aquarium fish and has not appeared in trade catalogues or hobby publications as of the time of writing. Its description is recent (2017) and it is known from a single river drainage in southeastern Bangladesh; no captive population has been documented. Hobbyists seeking a giant danio for the aquarium are currently better served by the closely related and widely available D. aequipinnatus.

Should D. coxi become available, care requirements would mirror those of other Devario: a spacious, well-filtered, well-oxygenated aquarium with strong current and plenty of open swimming space; a temperature range of approximately 72–79 °F; neutral to mildly acidic pH; and a secure lid, as Devario are powerful jumpers. A shoal of at least six individuals is the minimum for appropriate social behaviour. The species has no known hobbyist-reported experience to draw on.

Conservation

Devario coxi has not been formally evaluated by the IUCN Red List; as a species described in 2017 from a single drainage in southeastern Bangladesh, it falls into the large backlog of recently described fishes awaiting assessment. Its status is treated here as Not Evaluated (NE).

The Cox's Bazar region and the Chittagong Hill Tracts face substantial habitat pressure from agricultural expansion, deforestation, road construction and intensifying water extraction — threats that directly affect the foothill streams D. coxi inhabits. The species' apparent endemism to the Matamuhury River drainage gives it a very restricted range by any measure. Until a formal assessment is completed and population surveys are conducted, the precautionary view is that this fish merits conservation attention on the basis of restricted range alone, even in the absence of documented decline.
