Devario interruptus, the interrupted line danio, is a slender, active cyprinid of cool, clear mountain streams draining the Irrawaddy basin across northern Myanmar and adjacent Yunnan, China. At roughly 2–2.5 in standard length it sits at the smaller end of the giant danio group, but shares the genus's characteristic boldness and velocity — a fast-moving shoaler that demands pristine, oxygen-rich water and the company of its own kind. Its common name references the distinctive pattern along the flanks: short, wide vertical bars anteriorly that resolve into a dark horizontal stripe running to the caudal base, a break in continuity that distinguishes it immediately from the more uniformly striped Devario species. Relatively little-studied and carrying a Data Deficient assessment from IUCN, it remains an uncommon visitor to the aquarium hobby.

Taxonomy & naming

Devario interruptus was described by Francis Day in 1870, the parenthetical authority in the current valid name indicating the species was originally placed in a different genus before being transferred to Devario. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) recognises Devario interruptus (Day, 1870) as the valid combination. Day was a British surgeon-ichthyologist who produced the foundational reference work on the fishes of India and Burma, and many of his 1870 descriptions came from specimens collected across the Irrawaddy drainage.

Devario is a genus of medium to large danionine cyprinids — the so-called giant danios — distributed across South and Southeast Asia. It was long conflated with Danio in older literature, and some sources treated interruptus under Danio; the modern Catalog of Fishes maintains the separation. Unlike the smaller, more slender Danio species, Devario species are generally deeper-bodied and reach larger sizes. Molecular work, including a published mitochondrial genome sequence for D. interruptus, confirms its placement within Danionidae and supports the monophyly of the genus.

The specific epithet interruptus is Latin for 'broken' or 'interrupted', referring directly to the discontinuous lateral pattern — the series of anterior vertical bars that transitions midway along the body into a horizontal dark stripe, creating the interrupted appearance that is the species' most diagnostic feature.

Morphology

Devario interruptus is a streamlined, moderately deep-bodied danionine reaching approximately 2.5 in standard length, with the common size in the aquarium closer to 2 in. Like other Devario, it lacks barbels — distinguishing it from the superficially similar barbs — and has an incomplete lateral line, a feature shared with most danionines.

The colour pattern is the species' defining characteristic. Anteriorly, a series of short, wide, dark vertical bars mark the flanks, giving a banded or saddle-like appearance behind the head. From roughly the middle of the body, these bars give way to a single, bold horizontal dark stripe that runs to the base of the caudal fin, creating the interrupted or broken-line effect that the common and scientific names commemorate. Ground coloration is silver to pale olive, and the fins are largely hyaline. Ripe females become noticeably deeper in the belly than males, which are slimmer and more torpedo-shaped.

Habitat

Devario interruptus is endemic to the Irrawaddy basin, with the type locality at Hotha and the Husa Valley in Longchuan County, Dehong Prefecture, Yunnan, China. Its range extends into upper Irrawaddy tributaries in Myanmar. Aquadiction records confirm distribution along slow-flowing mountain streams, roadside ditches, and side channels of the Irrawaddy and its upper tributaries.

FishBase describes the species as inhabiting small, swift streams 1–2 metres wide and only 8–15.5 in deep, with clear water and substrates of sand, gravel, and rock. These are cool upland watercourses where dissolved oxygen is high and organic loading low. SeriouslyFish gives a temperature range of 61–70 °F, confirming this is a cool-water species that would be stressed by the higher temperatures typical of lowland tropical aquaria. pH spans 6.5–7.5 and hardness 36–179 ppm, indicating naturally soft to moderately hard water with a near-neutral reaction — consistent with hill-stream run-off.

Feeding

In the wild Devario interruptus feeds primarily on small insects and their larvae taken from the surface film and water column, a feeding strategy common to surface-orientated danionines living in clear, fast-flowing streams where terrestrial and aquatic invertebrates form the bulk of available prey.

In the aquarium SeriouslyFish recommends a varied diet based on a quality dried staple supplemented with live and frozen invertebrates — bloodworms, daphnia, and brine shrimp (Artemia) all accepted. The active, fast-moving nature of this species makes it a competitive feeder; in a community tank care should be taken to ensure slower or more timid tankmates receive adequate food. Feeding twice daily in small quantities is preferable to a single large meal.

Mating

Devario interruptus is an egg-scattering, non-guarding spawner. Like all danionines, it forms no lasting pair bond, builds no nest, and provides no care to eggs or larvae at any stage. Courtship takes the form of a driving chase in which a ripe male pursues a gravid female through vegetation or over the substrate, the pair pressing briefly together as eggs and milt are expelled simultaneously.

Because both sexes will readily consume their own eggs immediately after spawning, separation of adults from eggs is the central practical concern in captive breeding. Spawning can be triggered by a modest temperature increase, the addition of cool fresh water simulating rain-season run-off, and good conditioning on live and frozen foods in the weeks preceding breeding attempts.

Breeding

Devario interruptus has been bred in the aquarium. SeriouslyFish reports that spawning occurs over roughly 24 hours, with egg incubation of 24–36 hours at the species' preferred cool temperatures. The scattered adhesive eggs are deposited over plants, moss, or fine substrate and hatch into larvae that are initially immobile and feed from their yolk sacs before becoming free-swimming.

First foods for the fry are Paramecium or similar infusoria-grade live foods, with newly hatched brine shrimp (Artemia nauplii) introduced as the young fish grow. A breeding setup with a layer of fine-leaved plants such as Java moss, or a mesh false bottom over which the eggs can fall out of reach of the adults, improves success rates markedly. Water quality during rearing must be kept high, with frequent small water changes to prevent ammonia build-up in the soft, low-buffered water this species prefers.

In the aquarium

Devario interruptus is an uncommon species in the hobby, valued by enthusiasts who seek out cool-water hill-stream fishes. Its requirements differ meaningfully from those of most standard tropical danios: the 61–70 °F temperature range puts it at the cool end of what most heaters can reliably maintain, and it will not thrive in tanks set to typical tropical temperatures of 75–82 °F. An unheated or lightly heated aquarium in a cool room, or a chiller-equipped setup, is therefore a prerequisite.

Water quality must be pristine. SeriouslyFish notes the species is intolerant of organic pollution and recommends water change regimes of 30–50% weekly to maintain the clean, oxygen-rich conditions it experiences in fast-flowing Irrawaddy headwater streams. A tight-fitting lid is important — like most Devario, this is a powerful, surface-active swimmer that can clear the waterline readily.

It is a confirmed schooling species and should be kept in groups of eight to ten or more. In appropriate numbers it is bold and active, spending most of its time in the upper and middle water column. Tankmates should be robust, similarly sized, and comfortable in cool, clean water. Avoid delicate or slow-moving companions.

Conservation

Devario interruptus is listed as Data Deficient (DD) on the IUCN Red List, reflecting insufficient information to make a direct or indirect assessment of its risk of extinction based on its distribution or population status. No dedicated IUCN assessment page for the species was located in recent searches, and the DD categorisation is derived from search-based inference consistent with FishBase records.

The species is a narrow-range endemic of the upper Irrawaddy system. The Irrawaddy basin faces ongoing pressures from deforestation, agricultural run-off, small-scale gold and gem mining, and infrastructure development across both Yunnan and Myanmar. The small, clear headwater streams D. interruptus inhabits are particularly sensitive to siltation and pollution, and the species' documented intolerance of organic loading suggests it has limited capacity to persist in degraded habitat. Given these factors, the Data Deficient designation warrants attention — targeted survey work in the Longchuan/Dehong area and adjacent Myanmar tributaries is needed to establish whether populations are stable, declining, or already fragmented.
