Taxonomy & naming
Devario kakhienensis was described by W. T. Blanford Anderson in 1879 from specimens collected in the Kakhyen Hills, a range on the western edge of Yunnan Province at the China–Myanmar border — the type locality that gives the species its epithet. The name kakhienensis is a Latinised toponym meaning 'of the Kakhyen Hills,' referring to this frontier range through which the upper Irrawaddy headwaters drain.
The species was originally placed in the genus Danio, the broad wastebasket cyprinid genus that once held virtually all small, horizontally striped South and Southeast Asian schooling fishes. The subsequent revision of the Danio complex — particularly work by Fang and colleagues in the early 2000s — separated the larger, more elongate 'giant danios' into Devario Heckel, 1843, and kakhienensis moved with them. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) records the current valid combination as Devario kakhienensis (Anderson, 1879); the parenthetical authority marks the transfer out of Anderson's original genus. Literature older than roughly the 2000s may still carry the name Danio kakhienensis.
Morphology
Devario kakhienensis is a moderately large, elongate cyprinid reaching a maximum recorded total length of 4.5 in. Like other Devario, it has a slender, torpedo-shaped body suited to life in flowing water, a slightly oblique, upturned mouth, and an infraorbital process that is characteristic of the genus.
The colour pattern is the species' most distinctive feature: three dark horizontal stripes run along each flank, separated by three pale — gold or silver — interspaces of roughly equal width. The stripes narrow and taper posteriorly toward the caudal peduncle rather than maintaining a uniform band across the entire length. Meristic counts recorded from FishBase include 9–10 branched dorsal-fin rays, 11–13 branched anal-fin rays, and a complete lateral line of 31–36 scales — proportions consistent with the broader Devario complex but distinguishable from closely related species by the combination of stripe count, taper, and meristics.
Habitat
The species is documented from the Irrawaddy basin across the Myanmar–China border region, with records from both western Yunnan and northern Myanmar. It is a fish of small mountain streams: fast-flowing, clear, well-oxygenated hill watercourses draining the ranges on the eastern edge of the Irrawaddy catchment.
At these elevations, water temperatures are typically cooler than in the lowland Irrawaddy main stem, and the streams are characterised by high oxygen levels, moderate to swift current, and substrates of gravel, cobble, and bedrock rather than the soft sediment of slower tropical lowland rivers. The strong terrestrial-insect component of the diet confirms that D. kakhienensis holds position near the surface, taking advantage of riparian overhanging vegetation above small hill-stream channels — a microhabitat shared by many other Devario species.
Feeding
Devario kakhienensis is primarily insectivorous in the wild, with a feeding ecology dominated by terrestrial insects falling onto the water surface from overhanging vegetation. This surface-oriented, drift-feeding strategy is common among Devario species inhabiting forested hill streams where allochthonous input — invertebrates falling from bankside plants — forms a substantial fraction of available food.
In the aquarium, as with most Devario, the species will adapt readily to standard prepared foods, including floating flake and pellet diets. Live and frozen foods such as daphnia, mosquito larvae, small crickets, and bloodworm are likely to be accepted with enthusiasm and will help maintain condition. Given the strong surface-feeding habit, foods that remain near the top of the water column are most natural, though Devario are active enough to follow food throughout the water.
Mating
Devario kakhienensis, in common with all Devario and the wider danio–rasbora group, is an egg-scattering, non-guarding spawner. No pair bond is formed, no nest is built, and neither parent takes any interest in the eggs or larvae after spawning. In the wild, spawning is likely seasonal, probably triggered by rising water temperatures and increased flow at the start of the monsoon rains when the Irrawaddy headwater streams flood and flush.
Courtship follows the typical danio pattern: a reproductively active male pursues a gravid female closely, swimming alongside and pressing against her as the pair weave through vegetation or over the substrate. The act of spawning is brief — eggs and milt are released simultaneously into the current or among fine-leaved plants — and the pair separates immediately afterward with no further interaction.
Breeding
No captive-breeding accounts specific to Devario kakhienensis appear in the accessible aquarium literature, and the species is uncommon in the hobby. Based on its biology and close relationship to better-known Devario such as D. aequipinnatus and D. malabaricus, however, its reproductive requirements are likely broadly similar: a spacious tank with good flow, cooler water in the low-to-mid twenties Celsius, and clumps of fine-leaved plants or spawning mops over which eggs can be scattered.
Eggs are adhesive to weakly adhesive and fall among the substrate or catch in vegetation. Adults will consume eggs given the opportunity, so removing the parents after spawning is advisable. Larvae hatch in two to three days at suitable temperatures and are free-swimming within a few more days, at which point they take fine live foods (infusoria, newly hatched brine shrimp nauplii) before graduating to small prepared diets. Growth rate is not documented for this species specifically but is likely comparable to other mid-sized Devario.
In the aquarium
Devario kakhienensis is rarely available in the hobby and appears infrequently even in specialist shops with an interest in wild-caught or unusual Asian cyprinids. Its natural habitat in fast, clear, cool hill streams suggests it would require a well-filtered, highly oxygenated aquarium with a moderate to brisk current and cooler temperatures than typical tropical tanks — something in the range of 68–77 °F is likely to suit it better than 82 °F.
As a schooling species it should be kept in groups of at least six, and its moderate size (up to 4.5 in) means it needs a spacious aquarium — a tank of 47 in or more in length is appropriate for a group of adults. Tankmates should be robust, active, and of comparable size; the species is unlikely to be aggressive but may intimidate smaller, slower fishes simply by virtue of its size and speed. Its primarily insectivorous wild diet means high-protein foods are particularly beneficial, though it will accept most prepared diets.
Conservation
Devario kakhienensis is assessed as Data Deficient (DD) on the IUCN Red List, assessed in 2010. Data Deficient does not indicate security; it reflects an absence of sufficient information to make a reliable determination of extinction risk. In practice, for a species with a relatively restricted range in the upper Irrawaddy headwaters of western Yunnan and northern Myanmar, the lack of data is itself a concern.
The Irrawaddy basin headwaters in Yunnan and Kachin State face the same pressures as montane river systems across the region: hydropower development, deforestation of catchments leading to increased siltation and flash flooding, agricultural expansion into riparian zones, and water extraction. D. kakhienensis is sufficiently obscure that it does not appear in any significant trade volume and is unlikely to be affected by collection pressure, but the structural degradation of the small hill-stream habitat it depends on is a realistic ongoing threat for which monitoring data are currently inadequate.
