Taxonomy & naming
Devario micronema was originally described by Pieter Bleeker in 1863, who placed it in the genus Danio — a broad catchment at the time that housed most of the small danionin cyprinids of South and Southeast Asia. The original combination Danio micronema remained in use for much of the twentieth century. When the genus Devario was resurrected and delimited to hold the larger, more elongate danionins — the group informally called the giant danios — the species was reclassified as Devario micronema, the combination recognised by the Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS), the authority for valid names.
The Catalog of Fishes records the authority as (Bleeker, 1863), the parenthetical brackets indicating the species was not originally placed in Devario. Within the danionin tribe, Devario sits alongside Danio, Microdevario and a handful of other genera carved from the old, polyphyletic Danio aggregate. The validity of the description has been flagged as potentially problematic by some Sri Lankan ichthyologists, though the name remains on the valid list pending formal revision.
Morphology
Devario micronema is a slender, moderately elongate cyprinid with the fusiform body plan typical of the genus. FishBase records a maximum standard length of 3 in (male or unsexed), placing it at the smaller end of the Devario size range despite the genus being known for its relatively large representatives among the danionins.
Like other members of Devario, it bears the two pairs of barbels characteristic of danionin cyprinids and has a slightly upturned mouth consistent with a surface-to-midwater feeding habit. Detailed colour descriptions are sparse in the available literature; the species is poorly known in the hobby and has not been widely photographed in life. Sexual dimorphism has not been formally described but is expected to follow the pattern common in danionins, with females becoming noticeably deeper-bodied and more rounded when carrying eggs.
Habitat
Devario micronema is a habitat specialist with requirements that differ markedly from many of its congeners. It is recorded from well-shaded, shallow, slow-flowing streams in the Kitulgala area of the Kelani Valley, within the Kelani Valley Forest Reserve in the wet zone of Sri Lanka. This is lowland to lower-montane rainforest country, and the species' dependence on dense canopy cover is the defining ecological constraint on its range.
While the broader genus Devario is associated with fast, well-oxygenated hill streams and rivers, D. micronema occupies slower, shaded channels beneath intact forest where water temperatures are buffered by canopy and leaf litter provides structure. Water parameters inferred from regional rainforest streams are soft, near-neutral to slightly acidic, and cool relative to open Sri Lankan lowland waters. This stenotopic habitat affinity means the species is essentially absent wherever forest has been cleared — which across much of Sri Lanka's wet zone has happened extensively.
Feeding
FishBase assigns Devario micronema a trophic level of 3.0, consistent with an omnivore or generalist micropredator feeding at the base of the animal food web. This is the feeding guild typical of small danionins: small aquatic invertebrates — insect larvae, micro-crustaceans, worms and similar prey — taken from the water column and surface, supplemented with algae, plant-derived detritus and organic particles carried into the stream from the surrounding forest floor.
The shaded rainforest stream environment is likely to deliver a considerable input of terrestrial invertebrates — falling insects, spiders and other arthropods that constitute an important dietary subsidy in forested headwaters across Asia. In the aquarium, Devario micronema would be expected to accept small live and frozen invertebrates as well as quality prepared foods, though captive experience with this species is extremely limited.
Mating
Devario micronema is an egg-scattering, non-guarding spawner in the mode universal among danionins. There is no nest construction, no pair bond beyond the act of spawning itself, and no parental care of any kind. Courtship follows the pattern typical of the group: a driving male pursues a gravid female through vegetation or among submerged structure, and the pair release eggs and milt together in brief, pressing lateral contacts.
Spawning in related Sri Lankan and South Asian stream species is often linked to rainfall and seasonal cues. The shaded forest stream habitat of D. micronema suggests spawning may be tied to the wet-zone monsoon rains that raise and cool stream levels and trigger breeding in many stream cyprinids of the region. No specific field observations of courtship or spawning behaviour in this species have been published.
Breeding
Like all danionins, Devario micronema scatters adhesive or weakly adhesive eggs over fine-leaved plants, moss, submerged roots or gravel, after which the adults play no further role. The eggs are left to develop and hatch on their own; adults will consume eggs given the opportunity, a common feature of non-guarding scatter-spawners.
There are no published accounts of successful captive breeding of D. micronema, and the species is essentially absent from the ornamental trade. Were it to be maintained in captivity, the approach used for other small Devario species — a well-planted spawning tank with fine-leaved vegetation or java moss, soft and slightly acidic water reflecting the forest stream origin, and removal of adults after spawning — would be the logical starting point. Larval development and fry requirements are undescribed.
In the aquarium
Devario micronema is not an established aquarium fish. It has not entered the ornamental trade in meaningful numbers and appears rarely, if ever, in hobby literature. Its Endangered status and highly restricted wild range make any significant collection for the trade inadvisable, and captive breeding from wild-sourced stock has not been documented.
For those with an interest in Sri Lankan stream cyprinids, the species would theoretically require conditions reflecting its forest stream origin: a well-shaded, planted tank with gentle flow, soft and near-neutral water, and a temperature in the low-to-mid twenties Celsius consistent with a shaded lowland stream at Kelani Valley elevations. A shoaling species by nature, it would need to be kept in groups. Given the conservation situation, any captive work with this species would be of greater value directed toward ex-situ breeding programmes than toward the ornamental market.
Conservation
Devario micronema is listed as Endangered (EN) on the IUCN Red List under criteria B1ab(iii)+2ab(iii), assessed in 2019. The criteria reflect a severely restricted range — both the extent of occurrence and area of occupancy fall below the EN thresholds — with ongoing decline in habitat quality as the continuing metric driving the assessment.
The species is endemic to Sri Lanka and is known only from a small number of localities in the Kitulgala area of the Kelani Valley, all within shaded rainforest streams. Its Endangered status derives directly from this narrow range combined with continuing loss and degradation of wet-zone forest through agriculture, plantation expansion, logging, and infrastructure development. Deforestation removes the canopy that defines the species' habitat; stream sedimentation and altered hydrology follow. The Kelani Valley Forest Reserve provides partial protection, but pressures on the surrounding landscape remain intense. The species has no established captive population and is not available from the ornamental trade as a buffer against wild population decline.
