Taxonomy & naming
Devario myitkyinae was described by Sven O. Kullander in 2017, based on specimens collected from a stream and associated lake in the Ayeyarwaddy (Irrawaddy) River drainage near Myitkyina, Kachin State, northern Myanmar, in 1997–1998. The species epithet myitkyinae is a Latin genitive of Myitkyina, the principal town of Kachin State and the geographic anchor of the type locality. The Catalog of Fishes records the valid combination as Devario myitkyinae Kullander, 2017.
Within the genus, Kullander noted a close morphological affinity with D. browni and D. kakhienensis, two other Kachin-region Devario, and distinguished myitkyinae from the superficially similar D. fangae primarily on the shape and arrangement of the lateral stripe pattern. Devario is a sizeable genus of giant and semi-giant danios distributed across South and Southeast Asia, allied to Danio but consistently larger and differently patterned; the two genera together make up the danionin core of the family Cyprinidae.
Morphology
Devario myitkyinae is a slender, moderately compressed cyprinid. The largest specimen measured in the original description reached 2.5 in standard length; FishBase records maximum sizes of 2.5 in SL for males and 2.5 in SL for females, placing it among the smaller Devario.
The flank pattern consists of three dark stripes that Kullander described as narrow and irregular, of roughly equal width, and somewhat curved away from the horizontal — a configuration that separates it from congeners with broader, more uniform banding. As in other Devario, the body is elongate and the mouth slightly upturned, suited to surface-oriented feeding. Beyond what the original description and FishBase record, morphological detail for this species remains sparse in the accessible literature.
Habitat
The type specimens were collected from small streams near Myitkyina draining into the upper Ayeyarwaddy system. FishBase describes the habitat as small watercourses up to roughly 10 metres wide, set within bamboo forest with 60–80% canopy shade. The water was swift-flowing and clear with a slight brown tint, over a muddy bottom strewn with stones and leaf litter — conditions typical of shaded upland tributaries in northern Myanmar.
No temperature or pH data were recorded for the type locality, but the stream character — fast, well-shaded, leaf-littered, with a slightly tinted but clear column — is consistent with soft, moderately cool, well-oxygenated hill-stream water found throughout the upper Ayeyarwaddy watershed at this latitude.
Feeding
No specific dietary data have been published for Devario myitkyinae. By analogy with other Devario of similar build and habitat — fast, upland streams with abundant terrestrial and aquatic insect input — the species almost certainly feeds as an opportunistic omnivore, taking surface-fallen insects and arthropods, small aquatic invertebrates, and organic detritus drifting in the current.
In the aquarium, congeners with comparable ecology accept a wide range of small live and frozen foods (daphnia, bloodworm, brine shrimp) alongside quality flakes and micropellets, and there is no reason to expect this species to differ. Data for this species remain sparse.
Mating
No observations of courtship or spawning behaviour have been published for Devario myitkyinae. As a member of Devario — a genus of egg-scattering, non-guarding cyprinids — it almost certainly follows the pattern shared across the danionin clade: males pursue gravid females actively through vegetation or open water, and eggs and milt are released in brief, pressing contacts with no subsequent care by either parent.
In swift hill-stream Devario generally, spawning is often cued by seasonal rainfall and rising water that brings fish into shallower, vegetated marginal areas. Adults of most Devario will consume their own eggs if not separated from the spawning site promptly.
Breeding
Devario myitkyinae has not been reported as spawned in captivity, and no breeding protocol exists in the hobby literature. Its reproductive biology almost certainly conforms to the standard Devario model: an egg-scatterer that deposits adhesive or weakly adhesive eggs over plants, substrate, or leaf litter, with no parental care of any kind after spawning.
Based on the established approach for related hill-stream Devario, a breeding attempt would likely involve a well-conditioned pair or small group in a separate tank with fine-leaved plants or a spawning mop, a slight temperature rise, and the addition of fresh, soft water to simulate monsoon-season conditions. Eggs would need to be separated from adults immediately to prevent predation.
In the aquarium
Devario myitkyinae is effectively unknown in the aquarium trade and has not been reported in hobby literature. It is a narrow-range, recently described species from a remote area of northern Myanmar, and wild collection would be logistically difficult. No captive-maintenance records appear to exist.
Should specimens become available, care requirements would likely follow those for other shaded-stream Devario: a longer tank with good water movement and oxygenation, soft to moderately hard cool-to-tropical water, and a group of at least six to maintain natural schooling behaviour. Compatibility with peaceful, fast-moving companions of similar size would be expected. At present this remains a fish of the wild rather than the hobby.
Conservation
Devario myitkyinae has not been evaluated by the IUCN Red List. It is a recently described species (2017) with a type locality confined to small streams near Myitkyina in Kachin State, northern Myanmar — a restricted range that raises inherent concern about its vulnerability.
Kachin State has experienced significant land-use pressure from logging, road construction, agricultural expansion, and the ongoing conflict that has affected access to and monitoring of the region's biodiversity. Small hill-stream cyprinids with narrow ranges are disproportionately sensitive to catchment disturbance, riparian deforestation and sedimentation. Given its apparent endemism and the pressures on northern Myanmar's watersheds, formal evaluation of this species' conservation status would be warranted.
