Taxonomy & naming
Devario pathirana was formally described by Maurice Kottelat and Rohan Pethiyagoda in 1990, with the species named in honour of B. M. Pathirana, a Sri Lankan biologist who contributed to the early documentation of the island's freshwater fauna. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) records the valid combination as Devario pathirana (Kottelat & Pethiyagoda, 1990); the parenthetical authority signals that the species was originally placed in a genus other than Devario before the current assignment was confirmed.
The genus Devario comprises the giant danios — larger, deeper-bodied and more robustly built than the slim Danio species, and generally distributed across South and Southeast Asia. Devario pathirana sits firmly within this group on the basis of body form, size and general behaviour, though its distinctive barred colour pattern is atypical for the genus. GBIF and FishBase both confirm the Sri Lankan endemic range and the Kottelat & Pethiyagoda 1990 authority.
Morphology
The barred danio reaches approximately 2.5 in standard length in males, with total length ranging from roughly 2.5–3 in; females tend to be deeper-bodied and somewhat larger. The body is elongate, laterally compressed, and typical of the Devario bauplan — more substantial in build than a slender Danio, with a moderately arched dorsal profile.
The most arresting feature is the colour pattern: 7–11 dark blue to blue-black vertical bars cross each flank from behind the operculum to the caudal peduncle, where a horizontal stripe runs onto the tail. This combination of vertical bars and a horizontal caudal stripe is unusual within Devario and renders the species instantly identifiable. The interspaces between bars are pale silvery or gold-tinged. Fins are largely hyaline with a faint bluish cast. Sexually gravid females become noticeably rounded in the abdomen; males are slimmer with slightly brighter colouration at peak condition.
Habitat
Devario pathirana is a strict endemic of southwestern Sri Lanka, known primarily from small streams and tributaries associated with the Kanneliya Forest Reserve and the Opatha Ela stream within the Nilwala River watershed. This is lowland tropical rainforest terrain — hills and valleys receiving high rainfall, drained by fast-to-moderate-flow streams over lateritic clay substrates.
The species occupies waters of low to moderate gradient, with depths of roughly 4–59 in, substrates of smooth sandstone boulders, sand and silt patches, and fringing emergent or emerse aquatic vegetation. The streams are pristine or near-pristine where the fish still occurs: clear, well-oxygenated, soft to moderately hard (18–143 ppm), and near-neutral to slightly acidic in pH (6.0–7.5), with temperatures in the range of 70–79 °F. It avoids still, turbid or sandy-bottomed lowland waters and strongly prefers sites with turbulent flow and good dissolved oxygen.
Feeding
Devario pathirana is primarily insectivorous in the wild, as is typical for stream-dwelling giant danios. Its natural prey consists of aquatic insect larvae, surface-fallen terrestrial insects and small invertebrates drifting in the current — food items abundant in the clean, forested streams it inhabits.
In captivity the species accepts quality dried foods readily, but thrives and maintains best condition when the diet is regularly supplemented with live or frozen invertebrates: bloodworms, Daphnia and Artemia (brine shrimp) are all accepted. Feeding at multiple points in the tank helps ensure subordinate individuals receive adequate rations in a fast-moving shoal.
Mating
Devario pathirana is an egg-scattering, non-guarding spawner — the standard reproductive mode for danios and their allies. There is no nest construction, no bubble nest, no mouthbrooding and no parental bond beyond the act of spawning itself. In the wild, spawning is likely triggered by seasonal cues: rising temperatures, increased flow and the availability of suitable spawning sites among vegetation, roots or gravel in the stream margins.
Courtship involves active driving by the male, who pursues a gravid female persistently through vegetation and open water. The pair press together briefly, releasing eggs and milt simultaneously before separating. Spawning may involve multiple brief encounters over a period of hours, with eggs scattered broadly across the substrate and among plant material.
Breeding
In the aquarium, Devario pathirana can be bred using the standard approach for egg-scattering danios. A separate, shallow breeding vessel fitted with a mesh floor or a dense layer of fine-leaved plants — Java moss, hornwort or similar — allows eggs to fall out of the adults' reach, reducing predation. A well-conditioned group of three to five fish is introduced and a modest rise in water temperature, together with a partial water change with slightly cooler, soft water, often triggers spawning within a day or two.
Eggs are adhesive to slightly adhesive and are scattered broadly over plants and substrate. Adults should be removed after spawning is complete, as they will consume eggs and larvae readily. Hatching occurs in roughly two to three days at 75–77 °F; larvae become free-swimming a few days later and will accept infusoria, micro-worms and finely powdered fry food initially, progressing quickly to newly hatched brine shrimp nauplii. No parental care is given at any stage.
In the aquarium
The barred danio is a rewarding but somewhat demanding aquarium fish, not because it is delicate in the usual sense but because its habitat requirements are specific. It is a fast-water specialist that requires strong filtration generating turbulent, well-oxygenated flow — a powerful canister or hang-on-back filter, or powerheads, are appropriate. Nitrate should be kept below 50 mg/L. Still or sluggish water is unsuitable and will stress the fish over time.
It should be kept as a shoal of at least six individuals, ideally more; in smaller groups it becomes nervous and skittish. A longer tank with open midwater swimming space, some boulder or smooth-rock decor echoing its natural lateritic substrate, and areas of fine-leaved planting suit it well. Temperature 70–79 °F, pH 6.0–7.5, and soft to moderately hard water (18–143 ppm) match field conditions closely. Given its Endangered status in the wild, aquarium-bred stock should be preferred wherever available, and captive breeding is both achievable and worthwhile.
Conservation
Devario pathirana is assessed as Endangered (EN) on the IUCN Red List, with the most recent assessment dated August 2019. The species qualifies under the criteria for a restricted and declining range: it is endemic to a small number of streams in the Nilwala River watershed of southwestern Sri Lanka, and its habitat has been severely degraded by sand mining, removal of riparian and catchment forest for cultivation, and the associated decline in water quality and stream integrity.
Sri Lanka's southwestern lowland rainforest zone is one of the most threatened freshwater hotspots in Asia. The Kanneliya Forest Reserve, which anchors much of the remaining known range of this species, is itself under pressure from surrounding agriculture and development. Legal protection exists under Sri Lankan national conservation legislation, but enforcement in riparian zones is inconsistent. Population trend is inferred to be declining given ongoing habitat pressure. There is no published evidence of a captive insurance population or active recovery programme; the species' continued survival depends on the integrity of the few forested stream catchments it still occupies.
