Taxonomy & naming
Devario shanensis was first described by Sunder Lal Hora in 1928 from material collected at Hsipaw in the northern Shan States of Myanmar, with the Duthawadi River (a tributary of the Irrawaddy) as the type locality. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, the authority for valid names) records the current valid combination as Devario shanensis (Hora, 1928), the parenthetical authority marking the transfer from Hora's original genus placement.
The species has passed through several generic assignments since its description. GBIF nomenclatural records list former combinations as Danio shanensis and Brachydanio shanensis, both now treated as junior synonyms under the current Devario placement. Notably, the species was for a time placed in the monotypic or near-monotypic genus Inlecypris — the Seriously Fish species page still carries the URL slug inlecypris-shanensis, reflecting this earlier treatment — before being returned to Devario under modern molecular and morphological revisions. The genus Devario holds the giant danios and their allies, a group of slender, laterally compressed cyprinids distributed from South Asia east through Myanmar and into Indochina.
The specific epithet shanensis is a Latin adjectival form of "Shan," referring to the Shan States (now Shan State) of Myanmar, the highland plateau region where the type material was collected.
Morphology
Devario shanensis is a moderately sized danionin, reaching approximately 2–2.5 in in standard length (about 3 in total length per FishBase), placing it in the larger end of the genus alongside the giant danios proper. The body is elongate and laterally compressed, with a slightly upturned mouth well suited to taking surface and mid-water prey, and the streamlined build typical of fishes adapted to fast current.
Full colour pattern details are sparsely documented in the literature; the species is a Devario and will share the general family plan of horizontal striping or barring along the flank, though precise patterning descriptions in accessible sources are limited. The benthopelagic lifestyle noted by FishBase indicates it occupies the full water column in its stream habitat rather than being strictly bottom-associated.
Habitat
The Hora danio is native to fast-flowing, clear hill streams within the Duthawadi and Salween river systems in Shan State, north-eastern Myanmar. The Duthawadi (also written Duthawaddy or Myitnge) is a significant tributary of the upper Irrawaddy, draining the eastern Shan plateau before joining the main river near Mandalay; the Salween headwaters in Shan State flow ultimately to the Andaman Sea. Both systems rise in the highlands of the Shan Plateau, a region of dissected upland terrain producing streams that are characteristically cool, clear and swift.
Substrate in the type-locality habitat is rocky and pebbly, and the water is well oxygenated — conditions shared by many highland cyprinids of the region. Recorded water parameters from aquarium sources span 64–79 °F and pH 6.0–8.0 with hardness ranging broadly from soft to moderately hard (roughly 36–268 ppm), suggesting the species tolerates some variation in chemistry while still preferring the cooler end of the range appropriate for a fast, upland stream fish.
Feeding
In the wild, Devario shanensis is an opportunistic feeder in the manner of most danionins, taking aquatic and terrestrial insects and small invertebrates drifting in the current. The fast-flowing, food-rich hill streams it inhabits provide ample insect larvae, pupae, and small surface invertebrates for a mid-water ambush feeder with an upturned mouth.
In the aquarium the species is described as an unfussy feeder that accepts most standard offerings. Live and frozen foods — bloodworm, daphnia, and brine shrimp (Artemia nauplii) — are particularly beneficial for conditioning fish ahead of breeding and maintaining colour and vigour. A varied diet mixing good-quality dried foods with regular live or frozen items is recommended.
Mating
Devario shanensis is an egg-scattering, non-guarding spawner in the mode universal to danionins. There is no nest construction, no pair bond, and no parental investment beyond the act of spawning itself. A ripe male drives a gravid female persistently through the water column and among vegetation, the pair coming together briefly to release eggs and milt simultaneously.
Spawning in nature is likely triggered by seasonal cues — rising temperatures, increased photoperiod, or the onset of the rainy season — as is typical for highland Myanmar cyprinids. The eggs, once scattered over plants, moss, or substrate, receive no further attention from either parent. Adults will readily consume their own eggs if they encounter them, a natural consequence of the non-guarding reproductive strategy.
Breeding
In the aquarium, breeding is achieved by conditioning a small group of well-fed adults and transferring them to a separate, shallow spawning tank with fine-leaved plants, spawning mops, or Java moss over a mesh or marbled base — any arrangement that allows the scattered eggs to fall out of the parents' reach. Spawning typically occurs at dawn, triggered by the first light and the temperature stability of a well-maintained set-up.
Following spawning, the adults should be removed promptly to prevent egg predation. Eggs hatch within a day or two at appropriate temperatures, and the fry become free-swimming a few days after hatching, at which point infusoria or commercial fry foods sized for small larvae are required, followed by newly hatched brine shrimp as they grow. Practical Fishkeeping notes that the species readily spawns in well-maintained conditions and is a rewarding, if infrequently kept, breeding project.
In the aquarium
The Hora danio is rarely encountered in the hobby — it does not appear in mainstream trade with the regularity of the Bengal danio or giant danio — but it is an appealing fish for the specialist keeper of Asian hill-stream species. It is active, schooling, and best maintained in groups of at least six or more in a longer aquarium that provides open swimming space along the top third of the water column.
Water quality should reflect its hill-stream origins: cool (ideally not above 77 °F for sustained periods), clean, and well oxygenated, with a moderate current simulated by a directional filter outlet or powerhead. Soft to moderately hard water at near-neutral pH is appropriate. Robust, fast-moving tankmates of similar size suit it best; the constant activity and speed of the fish can stress smaller, more sedentary companions. It is unfussy over food and straightforward to maintain once the cooler temperature requirement is met, and its schooling behaviour in a spacious, well-planted stream biotope is striking.
Conservation
Devario shanensis is assessed as Data Deficient (DD) on the IUCN Red List. The Data Deficient designation reflects an absence of sufficient information to make a direct or indirect assessment of extinction risk — not a conclusion that the species is secure, but that the data needed to classify it do not yet exist. The IUCN notes that its restricted distribution and susceptibility to human-induced threats are factors warranting concern.
Shan State has experienced significant land-use change, deforestation, agricultural expansion, and periodic civil conflict over recent decades, all of which place pressure on the clear upland streams the species depends on. Sedimentation from deforestation, pesticide and nutrient runoff from hillside cultivation, and water extraction for irrigation and human use are the kinds of diffuse pressures that degrade highland stream habitats across Myanmar without triggering the dramatic habitat loss events that prompt formal threat assessments. Until the species' population size, range limits, and trend are adequately surveyed, its true conservation status cannot be determined, and it should be treated as potentially at risk given the pressures on its home watershed.
