Taxonomy & naming
Devario xanthella was formally described by Endruweit in 2025, making it one of the most recently named members of the genus Devario. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) is the authority for valid names, and the species is registered under the combination Devario xanthella Endruweit, 2025.
The genus Devario encompasses the giant danios — a group of larger, more robust danios distributed across South and Southeast Asia, from Pakistan and India through Indochina to southern China. The genus was clarified and expanded by Kottelat (1996, 2000) following decades of confusion between Devario and the smaller-bodied Danio, and subsequent work has continued to reveal undescribed species, particularly from Myanmar's river systems where habitat diversity and limited collecting have kept the fauna incompletely known. Devario xanthella is a product of this ongoing exploration.
No established common name has been applied to the species in the hobby or literature; given its epithet it might logically be called the yellow-spotted giant danio, but no vernacular name is formally in use.
Morphology
Devario xanthella reaches approximately 3 in in standard length, placing it squarely within the size range typical of the giant danios. Like its congeners it is an elongate, laterally compressed cyprinid with a moderately upturned mouth suited to surface and mid-water feeding.
The species is distinguished from its congeners by yellow spotting on the flanks, a feature encoded in the specific epithet (from Greek xanth-, yellow, and the diminutive -ella). Detailed morphometric and meristic data remain confined to the original description, and additional photographic and specimen-based documentation is sparse given the recency of the description. Fin coloration and exact lateral-line scale counts are best referenced against the original 2025 paper.
Sexual dimorphism is expected to follow the pattern typical of Devario: females become noticeably deeper-bodied and more rounded when gravid, while males remain slimmer and are typically more intensely marked.
Habitat
Devario xanthella is native to hill streams of the Irrawaddy drainage in Myanmar. Like the great majority of Devario species, it inhabits fast-flowing, cool and well-oxygenated upland rivers and streams — the kind of clear, turbulent, rocky or gravelly watercourses that characterise the upper reaches of major Myanmar river systems as they descend from the hills.
Water parameters for the Irrawaddy's hill-stream tributaries are broadly soft to moderately hard and near-neutral: FishBase records the species' preferred range as pH 6.5–7.5 and temperatures of 64–75 °F, the cooler end of this range reflecting the elevational and seasonal character of upland Myanmar streams. Oxygen content is high and current is pronounced, typical of the substrate-rich, boulder-strewn environments that Devario species favour.
The Irrawaddy is one of the major river systems draining the Indochina-Myanmar region and supports exceptional cyprinid diversity; many of its upland tributary systems remain poorly collected, which is partly why new species such as this continue to emerge from the basin.
Feeding
Devario xanthella is inferred to be an omnivorous micropredator in the manner typical of giant danios. FishBase records the diet as small invertebrates and zooplankton, consistent with the opportunistic insectivory seen across the genus — aquatic and terrestrial insects, small crustaceans, worms and similar invertebrates make up the bulk of the diet in wild-caught Devario species, supplemented by algae and organic detritus.
The upturned, terminal-to-slightly-supraterminal mouth and fast, active swimming style of Devario species suit a fish that feeds from the surface film and upper water column in fast-running streams, taking invertebrates that drift past in the current or are trapped in surface tension. In the aquarium, a diet of live and frozen invertebrate foods alongside quality flakes or small pellets would be appropriate.
Mating
Devario xanthella is an egg-scattering, non-guarding spawner, as is standard for the genus and the broader danio clade. There is no nest, no bubble-nest, no mouthbrooding and no parental care. Spawning is triggered by environmental cues — likely rising water temperatures and increased flow associated with seasonal rains in its upland Myanmar habitat.
Courtship follows the typical danio pattern: a male pursues a gravid female through the water column and among vegetation, pressing alongside her as eggs and milt are released simultaneously. The adhesive or weakly adhesive eggs are scattered over fine-leaved plants, moss, submerged roots or gravel and are abandoned immediately after spawning. Adults will consume eggs given the opportunity.
Breeding
No dedicated hobbyist accounts of breeding Devario xanthella exist in the literature as of 2025, owing to the species' very recent description and apparent rarity in the trade. General principles for breeding giant danios would apply: a separate, well-planted spawning tank with a mesh or marbles to protect eggs from the parents, slightly cooler and well-oxygenated water to mimic the upland stream environment, and conditioning of breeders on live or frozen invertebrate foods.
A pair or small group is introduced and spawning typically follows within a day or two if the fish are in good condition. The eggs are adhesive and scattered over plants or substrate; adults are removed after spawning. Eggs hatch in two to three days at appropriate temperatures, and the larvae become free-swimming and feeding within a few more days, initially taking infusoria or powdered fry food before graduating to newly hatched brine shrimp. Growth rate is expected to be moderate in the manner of other Devario species. No parental care occurs at any stage.
In the aquarium
Devario xanthella is essentially absent from the hobby as of 2025; the combination of its very recent description and endemic distribution in upland Myanmar hill streams means it has not entered commercial supply in any meaningful way, and no established husbandry guidelines exist. Any specimens in the aquarium would likely be researcher-held or derived from very limited collecting in the field.
Were the species to become available, care parameters inferred from its habitat and genus would point toward a spacious, well-oxygenated tank with good filtration and moderate-to-strong current, cooler water (64–75 °F), soft to moderately hard water at neutral to slightly acidic pH, and a diet of live and frozen invertebrate foods alongside quality prepared foods. It should be kept as a shoal, as is appropriate for all danios. A longer tank with open swimming space and some fine-leaved plants or moss would replicate the upland stream environment.
Conservation
Devario xanthella has not yet been assessed by the IUCN Red List; the species was described only in 2025 and no formal conservation evaluation has been completed. Its conservation status is therefore Not Evaluated (NE).
The species' restriction to hill-stream habitats within the Irrawaddy drainage in Myanmar raises legitimate conservation concerns. Myanmar's upland river systems face increasing pressure from deforestation, agricultural encroachment, sand and gravel extraction, and in some areas small-scale hydropower development — all of which degrade the clear, fast-flowing, well-oxygenated streams that Devario xanthella and its congeners depend on. Single-locality or narrow-drainage species described from Myanmar hill streams often prove to be quite restricted in range once better sampling is carried out, meaning the actual extent of this species' distribution remains uncertain.
A formal IUCN assessment, underpinned by range surveys and population data, is needed before the species' conservation needs can be reliably characterised. In the interim, general habitat protection for the Irrawaddy's upland tributaries serves the interests of this and many other underdescribed fish species.
