Rasbora lateristriata, the yellow rasbora or sidestrap rasbora, is a slender, shoaling cyprinid endemic to the islands of Java and Sumatra in Indonesia. Described by Pieter Bleeker from Bogor in 1854, it is a moderately large rasbora reaching 4.5 in — considerably bigger than most of its aquarium-famous relatives — and inhabits clear to moderately turbid rivers and streams from the lowlands to the hill foothills. Genetic and morphological work has revealed that the name once covered a broad species complex across the Indonesian archipelago, with Sumatran populations since reassigned to other taxa; only the true Javanese fish from the Bogor region represent R. lateristriata sensu stricto. The IUCN lists it as Vulnerable, its river habitats diminished by agricultural encroachment and land conversion across Java.

Taxonomy & naming

Rasbora lateristriata was described by the Dutch ichthyologist Pieter Bleeker in 1854, based on specimens from Bogor (then Buitenzorg) in West Java, Indonesia. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer) records the valid combination as Rasbora lateristriata (Bleeker, 1854), with the parenthetical authority marking the original placement in a different genus before Bleeker himself established the modern combination.

For much of the twentieth century the name was applied broadly to similar-looking sidestriped rasboras across Sumatra and parts of the Lesser Sundas, but molecular and morphological revisionary work published in 2016 demonstrated that this represented a cryptic species complex with clear west-to-east divergences across the Indonesian archipelago. Sumatran specimens previously referred to R. lateristriata have been reassigned to distinct species; the name now applies strictly to the Javanese lineage centred on the type locality at Bogor.

The genus Rasbora, once a sprawling catch-all of more than 80 small Southeast Asian cyprinids, has been progressively refined: Boraras, Trigonostigma, Trigonopoma, Brevibora, Kottelatia and Rasboroides were carved out during the late twentieth and early twenty-first centuries, but R. lateristriata remains in Rasbora sensu stricto. No subspecies are recognised for the restricted Javanese entity.

Morphology

The yellow rasbora is a slender, fusiform cyprinid with a moderately compressed body and a small, terminal to slightly upturned mouth. It reaches a maximum of 4.5 in total length — large for a rasbora and atypical of the diminutive species better known in the hobby — though wild individuals in the Ngrancah River, Kulon Progo (Java) commonly measure 1.5–3 in total length, weighing 1.3–6 grams.

The species takes its common names from two features: a warm yellow-gold suffusion over much of the body (particularly vivid in well-conditioned adults) and a dark, horizontal lateral stripe running from behind the gill cover to the caudal peduncle, sometimes accompanied by a narrower golden stripe above it. The flanks are otherwise silvery, the dorsum olive to brownish, and the fins are largely hyaline with a faint yellowish tint. The lateral line is complete.

Sexual dimorphism is modest. Ripe females are noticeably deeper-bodied and more silvery than males; males are slimmer and tend to show more intense golden colouration. Gravid females become conspicuously rounded in the belly prior to spawning.

Habitat

Rasbora lateristriata occupies rivers, streams and their tributaries across Java, including both lowland and foothill environments. The type locality is Bogor in West Java, situated at the foot of the Puncak highlands, and the species has been studied in the Ngrancah River in Kulon Progo Regency in central Java — a river with upstream (hill) through midstream and downstream (lowland) gradients. Population surveys across these zones found individuals distributed at all sites, with higher densities in the mid- to downstream reaches.

FishBase records a temperature preference of 72–81 °F with the preferred optimum towards the cooler end of that range (around 72–75 °F), reflecting the species' association with both lowland streams and cooler upland tributaries. Water pH spans roughly 6.0–7.5, with preference around 6.0–6.5 — moderately soft to neutral, slightly acidic water characteristic of many Javanese river systems that drain volcanic and weathered tropical soils.

The species is a shoaling, midwater fish found in flowing water with some structure — submerged vegetation, tree roots and leaf accumulations providing cover. Like many Indonesian freshwater fishes, it is exposed to pronounced seasonal variation in water temperature, flow and turbidity driven by the monsoon cycle.

Feeding

Rasbora lateristriata is an omnivore, consuming small invertebrates, aquatic insect larvae, zooplankton and plant material in the wild. Its terminal to slightly upturned mouth and active, shoaling habit suit a fish that feeds throughout the water column and at the surface, opportunistically taking whatever small prey or plant matter the current delivers.

In the aquarium the yellow rasbora is undemanding. It accepts high-quality flake and small pellets readily, and its condition and colour are improved with regular offerings of live and frozen foods — daphnia, bloodworm, brine shrimp and similar invertebrates. Because it is a larger rasbora, it can take slightly bigger prey items than the diminutive Boraras and Trigonostigma relatives more commonly kept. Feeding in a group, it is a confident, eager feeder.

Mating

Rasbora lateristriata is an egg-scattering, non-guarding spawner — the standard breeding strategy for the genus and the danio/rasbora clade broadly. There is no nest, no pair bond beyond the spawning act itself, and no parental care; the adults are indifferent or predatory toward the eggs once scattered.

Courtship follows the typical rasbora pattern: a ready male tracks a gravid female closely through the water column, pressing alongside her among fine-leaved vegetation or over a substrate of plants and gravel. The pair release eggs and milt in brief, closely parallel bursts. Spawning may involve several passes, with eggs falling into the vegetation or dropping to the substrate as they are released. The adhesive or weakly adhesive eggs adhere loosely to plant surfaces or settle among gravel interstices where adults are less likely to encounter them.

Breeding

Reproductive biology of R. lateristriata has been documented in the Ngrancah River, Kulon Progo, Java, including studies of embryonic development. Like other Rasbora, this species scatters adhesive eggs over fine-leaved plants, moss, roots and gravel and provides no parental care whatsoever; eggs and fry are entirely on their own after release.

In the aquarium, breeding follows the approach standard for egg-scattering rasboras: a separate, clean spawning tank furnished with java moss, fine-leaved plants or a spawning mop, slightly soft and acidic water (pH 6.0–6.5, temperature around 75–79 °F) and a well-conditioned group or selected pair. Adults should be removed after spawning to prevent egg predation. Eggs hatch in two to three days at tropical temperatures; larvae become free-swimming within a few days more and should initially be offered infusoria or similar micro-foods, graduating to newly hatched brine shrimp as they grow. Because this is a larger rasbora, juveniles grow on reasonably quickly and are less demanding to raise than some smaller relatives.

In the aquarium

The yellow rasbora is rarely seen in the hobby outside Indonesia, where it is occasionally collected for the local and export trade, but it makes a rewarding aquarium fish for those who seek it out. Its larger size — up to 4.5 in in exceptional specimens, commonly 2.5–3 in in captivity — means it is better suited to a medium or large aquarium than to the nano tanks favoured by Boraras or Trigonostigma species.

A long aquarium of at least 35.5–39.5 in, well planted with fine-leaved vegetation and driftwood to replicate a Javanese river, suits it well. It is a peaceful shoaling species and should be kept in groups of at least six or eight; a conspecific group is calmer and shows better colour than isolated individuals. Tankmates should be similarly sized peaceful fish. Water conditions of 72–81 °F, pH 6.0–7.0 and soft to moderate hardness reflect its native river chemistry. It is an active, open-water swimmer that appreciates gentle current.

Due to its Vulnerable conservation status, acquiring captive-bred specimens where available is preferable to wild-caught fish from declining Javanese populations.

Conservation

Rasbora lateristriata is assessed as Vulnerable (VU) on the IUCN Red List, with a declining population trend. Estimates suggest approximately 10,000–100,000 mature individuals remain — a figure reflecting both the species' restricted true range (Java and parts of Sumatra, now clarified to the Javanese lineage) and the substantial degradation of its lowland and foothill river habitats.

Java is one of the most densely populated islands on Earth, and its freshwater ecosystems are under intense pressure from agricultural conversion (rice paddies, plantation crops), urban and industrial expansion, river channelisation, water extraction, and pollution. The original habitat of R. lateristriata was once moderately abundant across suitable Javanese river systems; today such habitat is increasingly fragmented and reduced. The restricted, island-endemic range and the severity of ongoing habitat loss underpin the Vulnerable assessment.

No targeted conservation measures for this species are known. Broader freshwater conservation initiatives focused on protecting Javanese river catchments would benefit R. lateristriata and a suite of other endemic freshwater fishes. In the aquarium context, sourcing captive-bred individuals reduces pressure on already-diminished wild populations.
