Taxonomy & naming
Devario gibber was described by Maurice Kottelat in 2000, making it one of the more recently erected species in the genus. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, the authority for valid names) records the valid combination as Devario gibber (Kottelat, 2000), the parenthetical authority indicating the original description was placed in Devario from the outset. The type locality is the Xe Katam stream in the Xe Kong and Xe Don sub-basins of the Mekong River system, Champasak Province, southern Laos, at coordinates approximately 15°07'N, 106°37'E.
The genus Devario is a well-supported danionin lineage encompassing the larger, more robust members of the danio alliance — sometimes grouped informally as giant danios — and has been confirmed as valid in molecular phylogenetic work on danionin cyprinids. Kottelat's 2000 revision established a cleaner circumscription of Devario by separating it from the closely related Danio, and D. gibber belongs to that revised genus as currently recognised. No synonyms are listed for this species, and it has not been reassigned since its description.
Morphology
FishBase records a maximum standard length of 2.5 in for Devario gibber, placing it at the smaller end of the giant danio group but substantially larger than the dwarf danios. Like other Devario, it has an elongate, laterally compressed body with a slightly upturned mouth suited to surface and midwater feeding, and the characteristic cyprinid barbels are present. Precise colouration data are sparse for this species in the literature, but members of the genus typically display horizontal body striping or a reticulated pattern in life, often with metallic blue or silver flanks and a pale belly.
Sexual dimorphism has not been described in detail for D. gibber specifically. In related Devario species females tend to be deeper-bodied and more rotund when gravid, while males are slimmer and more torpedo-shaped — a pattern likely shared here, though definitive descriptions await closer study of preserved and live material.
Habitat
Devario gibber is a benthopelagic species of freshwater hill streams, recorded from stone-bottomed channels with moderately fast to rapidly flowing, well-oxygenated water in the Xe Kong and Xe Don river systems — Mekong tributaries draining the southern Laotian uplands into Cambodia. FishBase notes that the species is uncommon in floodplain settings, suggesting a preference for the faster, cleaner upland reaches of these rivers over sluggish lowland waters.
Its habitat is broadly consistent with the ecological preferences of the genus: Devario species across South and Southeast Asia inhabit clear, oxygen-rich streams with gravel, cobble or bedrock substrates. Based on the genus-level tolerances documented for related Devario, the species likely experiences water temperatures in the range of approximately 70–79 °F, pH values near neutral to mildly acidic or alkaline (roughly 6.0–8.0), and relatively low turbidity year-round, with some seasonal variation tied to the Mekong's monsoon hydrology.
Feeding
No species-specific dietary studies have been published for Devario gibber, and data remain sparse. By analogy with the broader Devario genus and danionin cyprinids generally, it is presumed to be an opportunistic omnivore and micropredator, taking small aquatic and terrestrial invertebrates — insect larvae, small crustaceans, and surface-fallen insects — along with algae and organic detritus. Its benthopelagic habit and upturned mouth are consistent with feeding in the water column and at the surface, as is typical for active, shoaling danios in swift-water environments.
In aquaria, related Devario species accept high-quality flake and micro-pellet foods with enthusiasm, and their condition is best maintained with regular supplements of live or frozen invertebrate prey such as daphnia, bloodworm, or mosquito larvae.
Mating
Devario gibber is an egg-scattering, non-guarding spawner, following the reproductive strategy universal among danios and rasboras. No parental bond forms and no nest is constructed. In related species, spawning is triggered by seasonal cues — rising water levels, increased rainfall, and slightly elevated temperatures — that in the Xe Kong basin would correspond to the onset of the southwest monsoon, when hill streams rise and flow into newly inundated marginal vegetation.
Courtship involves persistent male pursuit of a gravid female through vegetation or over the substrate. When a ripe female is ready, the pair presses together and releases eggs and milt simultaneously. The adhesive or weakly adhesive eggs settle among plant material or into crevices in the gravel, where the adults provide no further attention and will readily consume them given the opportunity.
Breeding
No captive breeding accounts specific to Devario gibber appear in the hobby literature, reflecting its rarity in the aquarium trade. Based on the closely parallel biology of the genus, successful breeding would likely follow the standard protocol used for other Devario and large danio species: a well-conditioned group housed in a tank with fine-leaved plants or a spawning mop over a substrate of marbles or mesh through which eggs can fall out of the adults' reach.
A partial water change with slightly cooler water can simulate the arrival of fresh rainfall and trigger spawning. Eggs scattered by the breeding pair should be separated from the adults as soon as possible to prevent predation. At typical subtropical temperatures, hatching would be expected within two to three days, with larvae becoming free-swimming and accepting fine live foods such as infusoria and newly hatched brine shrimp a few days thereafter.
In the aquarium
Devario gibber is essentially unknown in the mainstream aquarium hobby and is not commercially available through the typical trade channels. Its close relatives — Devario devario, D. aequipinnatus and D. malabaricus — are far better represented in the hobby and give a reasonable guide to its likely requirements: a spacious tank with good filtration and water movement, cooler water in the 70–79 °F range, neutral to slightly soft or moderately hard water, and a shoal of at least six individuals to allow natural schooling behaviour.
Should specimens become available through specialist importers or scientific collection, they would best be kept in an Asian hill-stream biotope setup with smooth pebbles, moderate current, and robust, anchored plants. Their active swimming style and potential size of around 2.5 in SL make them unsuitable for nano aquaria. As with all wild-collected Southeast Asian stream fishes, high water quality and oxygen saturation would be paramount.
Conservation
Devario gibber is assessed as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List, with the 2022.2 database recording it as stable within its native range. The species is currently known from the Xe Kong and Xe Don basins in Champasak Province, southern Laos, with FishBase noting the likelihood of its presence in adjacent northern Cambodia given the connected drainage geography.
Although the LC assessment reflects no acute range-wide crisis, the species' apparently restricted distribution within a handful of Mekong tributaries warrants attention. The lower Mekong basin is under significant pressure from hydropower development, agricultural intensification, sand mining, and seasonal water extraction — factors that can degrade or fragment the clear, fast-flowing stream habitats that Devario gibber and related species depend upon. Periodic reassessment as basin-scale hydrological changes accumulate would be prudent.
