Rasbora gerlachi is one of the least-known members of the large and taxonomically complex genus Rasbora — a fish documented from only two old aquarium-trade specimens and never collected again from the wild in any confirmed form. Described by Ernst Ahl in 1928, the species carries the peculiar distinction of having a type locality listed as Cameroon in West Africa, an origin ichthyologists regard as almost certainly erroneous: the genus Rasbora is entirely Asian, and the specimens almost certainly arrived from Malaya or Indonesia via the early twentieth-century ornamental fish trade. Data Deficient on the IUCN Red List and essentially absent from the scientific literature beyond its original description, Rasbora gerlachi remains a ghost fish — valid on paper, invisible in the field.

Taxonomy & naming

Rasbora gerlachi was described by Ernst Ahl in 1928, based on two specimens that had passed through the aquarium trade. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, the authority for valid names) records the valid combination as Rasbora gerlachi Ahl, 1928. The species name honours Gerlach, the individual who supplied or collected the original specimens, though the identity of this person is not elaborated in the primary description.

The type locality given in the original description is Cameroon — a West African country where no member of the genus Rasbora has ever been recorded naturally. Cameroon has never harboured any rasboras; the family Cyprinidae is represented there by different genera entirely. Ichthyologists have consistently treated the Cameroon origin as a trade error: specimens in the early aquarium trade frequently had their origin mislabelled or confused, and the likeliest actual source is Southeast Asia, most probably the Malay Peninsula or the Indonesian archipelago, where the genus Rasbora is broadly distributed.

Within the genus Rasbora, major taxonomic reshufflings since the 1990s have carved out numerous former Rasbora species into segregate genera including Boraras, Trigonostigma, Trigonopoma, Brevibora, Kottelatia and Rasboroides. Rasbora gerlachi has not been reassigned and formally remains in Rasbora, though in the absence of fresh material, molecular placement is impossible.

Morphology

The morphology of Rasbora gerlachi is poorly documented. No detailed published redescription exists beyond Ahl's original account of 1928, and no photographs of confirmed wild specimens are on record. As a member of Rasbora, it is expected to be a small, slender, laterally compressed cyprinid with the fine body form characteristic of the genus — a fusiform shape, moderate-sized scales, a relatively small mouth and the absence of spines in the fins.

Specific size data for R. gerlachi are not captured in the scientific literature. The genus Rasbora spans a wide range of body sizes, from under 1 in to around 6.5 in standard length, and without reliable specimens this species cannot be reliably placed within that spectrum. No colouration, stripe pattern, fin-count data or meristic measurements have been widely published outside the original description. The species must therefore be regarded as morphologically unresolved until fresh, correctly provenanced material is examined.

Habitat

The natural habitat of Rasbora gerlachi is unknown, a direct consequence of the erroneous type locality and the absence of any subsequent field record. No confirmed wild population has been located, so water chemistry, substrate, vegetation and environmental parameters cannot be stated from primary data.

Based on the inferred Southeast Asian origin and the ecology of the genus broadly, R. gerlachi likely inhabited slow-flowing freshwater streams, forest pools or floodplain wetlands in Malaya or western Indonesia. Related Southeast Asian Rasbora species typically occupy clear to tannin-stained lowland waters, often with dense marginal vegetation, a soft substrate and gentle or negligible current. Water temperatures in such habitats generally range from around 22 to 28 degrees Celsius, with pH values from slightly acidic to neutral and generally soft to moderately soft conditions. These inferences are genus-level and not specific to this species; until correctly provenanced specimens are collected, the habitat remains conjecture.

Feeding

No feeding ecology data exist for Rasbora gerlachi specifically. As a small cyprinid of the genus Rasbora, it was almost certainly a generalist omnivore of the water column, taking small invertebrates — aquatic insect larvae, microcrustaceans and zooplankton — alongside algal material and organic particles, consistent with the broad feeding biology of the genus. Many rasboras are primarily insectivorous or micropredatory in the wild, with omnivory increasing in disturbed or nutrient-rich environments.

In the aquarium, related Rasbora species accept all standard small prepared foods including flake and micro-pellets, and thrive on live or frozen supplement foods such as daphnia, brine shrimp nauplii and micro-worms. Given the extreme rarity of R. gerlachi in the hobby, there is effectively no captive husbandry record for the species.

Mating

No direct observations of mating behaviour in Rasbora gerlachi have been published. Rasboras are egg-scattering, non-guarding spawners: in the typical pattern, a male pursues a gravid female actively through vegetation or across the substrate, and the pair release eggs and milt together at the climax of the chase. There is no pair bond, no courtship territory and no nest construction.

Spawning in Southeast Asian rasboras is often tied to seasonal cues — the onset of rains, rising water levels and warming temperatures — which stimulate the production of ripe eggs and active chasing behaviour in males. None of these specifics have been documented for R. gerlachi, and the IUCN assessment explicitly notes the absence of any records of maturity size, fecundity or developmental stages in the scientific literature.

Breeding

Rasbora gerlachi is an egg-scatterer that produces adhesive or weakly adhesive eggs scattered over fine-leaved plants, moss or substrate; adults provide no parental care and will eat eggs given access to them. This reproductive mode is universal in the genus and in the danio and rasbora clade generally, and there is no basis for assigning any other mode to this species.

No captive breeding of R. gerlachi has been published. The species has not been reported in the ornamental fish trade in recent decades, and no aquarium spawning account or fry-rearing record is accessible. Were it to appear in the hobby, the standard approach for rasbora breeding — a shallow tank with fine-leaved plants or spawning mops, well-conditioned fish, gentle filtration, slight temperature rise, and prompt removal of adults after spawning — would be the logical starting point. Eggs of related species typically hatch within two to three days at tropical temperatures.

In the aquarium

Rasbora gerlachi is not available in the aquarium trade and has not been kept or maintained in captivity in any documented modern context. Its profile in the hobby is essentially nonexistent: the fish passed through early twentieth-century trade channels, was described from those specimens, and vanished. It cannot be recommended, sourced, or practically discussed as an aquarium subject at this time.

If the species were ever rediscovered and brought into captivity, the husbandry template of related Southeast Asian Rasbora species would apply: a well-planted tank with gentle filtration, soft to moderately soft slightly acidic water, subdued lighting, and a diet of varied small foods. A small shoal would be the appropriate social unit, as rasboras are schooling fishes by nature. Until a confirmed wild population is located and studied, all aquarium guidance for this species remains hypothetical.

Conservation

Rasbora gerlachi is assessed as Data Deficient (DD) on the IUCN Red List, last evaluated on 16 February 2009. The Data Deficient designation reflects the complete absence of reliable distributional, population or ecological data — not a low threat level. A species listed as DD may be significantly threatened once its actual range and status are known; the listing is a statement of ignorance rather than reassurance.

The root cause of the data gap is the erroneous type locality. Because no confirmed wild population of R. gerlachi has ever been located, it is impossible to assess population trends, habitat condition or the threats operating on the species. Southeast Asian freshwater habitats broadly — lowland streams, peat swamps and forest rivers in Malaya and Indonesia — have suffered severe degradation from deforestation, peat-swamp drainage for agriculture, pollution and water extraction over the past century. If R. gerlachi does originate from this region, the habitat in which it evolved has likely been substantially transformed. Clarifying the species' true identity and origin remains a prerequisite for any conservation action.
