Rasbora haru is a slender, midwater cyprinid described in 2014 by Lumbantobing from the Bohorok River drainage of northeastern coastal Sumatra, Indonesia. One of four new species erected in that paper within the Sumatrana group of Rasbora, it is distinguished from its closest relatives by a distinctive stamen-like black midlateral stripe running along a relatively deep body. A single-river endemic known only from clear-water tributaries within the southern Gunung Leuser National Park drainage of Langkat Regency, North Sumatra, it remains one of the lesser-known members of a group undergoing active taxonomic study.

Taxonomy & naming

Rasbora haru was formally described by Lumbantobing in 2014 as one of four new species of the Sumatrana group from northern Sumatra, Indonesia. The Sumatrana group is a species complex within the large and heterogeneous genus Rasbora, united by body form and midlateral stripe patterning. The paper, published in the journal Zootaxa, diagnosed R. haru chiefly on the character of its stamen-like black midlateral stripe and relatively deep body, features that separate it from the other members of the group occurring in Sumatra.

The genus Rasbora itself has been the subject of extensive revision over recent decades. Multiple lineages have been carved out into separate genera — Boraras, Trigonopoma, Brevibora, Kottelatia and Rasboroides, among others — leaving a reduced but still sizeable core Rasbora. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) records the valid name as Rasbora haru Lumbantobing, 2014, and there are no reported synonyms.

The species epithet haru likely refers to the Bohorok River drainage area or a locality name in Langkat Regency, North Sumatra, though the original description should be consulted for the author's explicit etymology. No established English vernacular name is in wide circulation.

Morphology

Rasbora haru reaches a reported maximum standard length of approximately 4 in, placing it among the larger members of the Sumatrana group. The body is relatively deep for a rasbora, and the most immediately noticeable feature is the black midlateral stripe, described in the original diagnosis as stamen-like — suggesting a stripe that is narrow, well-defined, and contrasting sharply against the flank rather than diffuse or branched.

Beyond the diagnostic stripe, the species conforms to the general Rasbora bauplan: a laterally compressed, fusiform body with a terminal to slightly upward-angled mouth, moderate-sized scales, and a forked caudal fin. Specific meristic counts (dorsal and lateral-line scale counts, fin-ray formulae) are given in Lumbantobing's original description. Like most members of the genus, the background coloration is likely silvery on the flanks and pale on the belly, with subdued olive or tan tones dorsally. Data on sexual dimorphism are sparse, but females of similarly sized Rasbora species are typically deeper-bodied than males when gravid.

Habitat

Rasbora haru is known from the Bohorok River system in Langkat Regency, North Sumatra, within the drainage area of the southern Gunung Leuser National Park — one of the largest and most biodiverse protected areas in Southeast Asia. The Bohorok River and its tributaries drain the foothills and lower slopes of the Leuser massif, flowing northeast toward the Strait of Malacca coast of North Sumatra.

The microhabitat recorded for this species is characterised by clear water with slow to moderate flow, over substrates of bedrock, boulders, rocks and gravel. Submerged aquatic vegetation appears to be absent or very sparse in the sampled localities. This is a relatively clean, well-oxygenated stream environment, different from the blackwater peat-swamp habitats that support many other Sumatran cyprinids. Water chemistry parameters specific to the Bohorok catchment at collection sites are not detailed in the available literature, but the clear-water, hard-substrate setting suggests a mildly acidic to near-neutral, soft-to-moderately-soft stream with good visibility.

Feeding

No dietary study specific to Rasbora haru has been published. As a midwater stream cyprinid of the Sumatrana group, it likely feeds as an opportunistic omnivore, taking small invertebrates — aquatic insect larvae, small crustaceans, surface-fallen terrestrial insects — along with algae and particulate organic matter. This feeding mode is broadly consistent with what is known for congeners of similar size occupying comparable clear-water stream habitats in Sumatra and the broader Sunda region.

In the aquarium, closely related Rasbora species of similar size accept a wide range of prepared foods including quality flakes, micro-pellets and granules, with live and frozen items such as daphnia, bloodworm and brine shrimp helping to maintain condition. Given the very limited collection and husbandry data available, aquarium feeding notes remain largely extrapolated from congeners.

Mating

Rasbora haru has not been observed spawning in the wild or bred in captivity in any published account. It is, however, a member of a genus whose reproductive biology is well characterised across many species: Rasbora are egg-scattering, non-guarding spawners with no permanent pair bond and no provision of parental care.

In the wild, spawning is typically triggered by seasonal cues — rising water temperature, increased flow, and the arrival of the wet season. A driving male pursues a gravid female closely through the water column and among any available cover, and eggs and milt are released simultaneously. The eggs, which may be lightly adhesive or semi-adhesive, settle onto the substrate or catch in vegetation, and the adults take no further interest in them.

Breeding

No captive breeding account for Rasbora haru exists in the available literature, and the species is not known to be established in the ornamental trade. Extrapolating from closely related congeners, breeding would follow the standard egg-scattering template: a separate, dimly lit spawning vessel with fine-leaved plants, java moss or a mesh bottom to protect eggs from the adults; a conditioning period on varied live and frozen foods; and a gradual warming of the water to simulate the onset of the wet season.

After spawning the adults should be removed, as eggs and early fry would be at risk of predation. Eggs of similarly sized Rasbora species typically hatch within two to three days at tropical temperatures, and free-swimming fry can be started on infusoria or commercially available fry foods before progressing to newly hatched brine shrimp. All specifics remain speculative until the species is documented in culture.

In the aquarium

Rasbora haru is not a common aquarium fish and is unlikely to be encountered in the mainstream ornamental trade. Its description from within a national-park drainage in Sumatra, combined with the absence of established captive populations, means that most hobbyists would encounter it only through specialist importers or in the context of a broader interest in Sumatran cyprinids.

Should it become available, husbandry would by analogy follow the requirements of other medium-to-large Sumatrana-group rasboras: a spacious tank with clean, well-oxygenated water, gentle to moderate current, soft acidic to near-neutral water chemistry reflecting its clear-water stream origins, and a group of at least six individuals to maintain natural shoaling behaviour. The species' clear-water, hard-substrate native habitat suggests it would not be a candidate for heavily tannin-stained blackwater setups.

Conservation

Rasbora haru was assessed as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List (assessment dated 2020). The assessment reflects the species' occurrence within the well-protected Gunung Leuser National Park catchment, one of Sumatra's most robustly defended natural areas, which affords some buffering against the deforestation and agricultural encroachment that threaten many other Sumatran endemics.

Nonetheless, the species is a confirmed single-river endemic known only from the Bohorok drainage, a narrow geographic footprint that inherently limits its resilience to localised threats. North Sumatra's lowland forests outside protected boundaries have faced intense pressure from oil-palm expansion and logging, and stream habitats along the park periphery can be affected by sedimentation and runoff from adjacent cleared land. Long-term monitoring of the Bohorok population would be warranted given its restricted range, even under a current Least Concern assessment.
