Taxonomy & naming
Rasbora labiosa was described by D.D. Mukerji in 1935, and the Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) records it as a valid species under the genus Rasbora. The species is also known in some literature under the combination Parluciosoma labiosa (Mukerji, 1935), reflecting the ongoing taxonomic reshuffling within the broader rasbora assemblage — numerous former Rasbora species have been redistributed into segregate genera such as Boraras, Trigonostigma, Brevibora, Trigonopoma, and Kottelatia following modern phylogenetic work. Whether Parluciosoma is accepted as a valid genus depends on the authority followed; this site follows the current Catalog of Fishes treatment.
The specific epithet labiosa derives from the Latin labium (lip), referring to the pronounced lips characteristic of this species. The common name 'slender rasbora' alludes to its relatively elongate body form compared with the deeper-bodied members of the genus.
Morphology
Rasbora labiosa is an elongate, laterally compressed cyprinid with a moderately pointed snout and, as the name suggests, notably thickened or fleshy lips relative to many congeners. FishBase records a maximum total length of 3.5 in, making it a mid-sized rasbora. The body is slender and streamlined, suited to life in moving water.
Colouration is typical of the genus: a silvery-gold flank with a dark lateral stripe or midlateral pigmentation running from behind the operculum toward the caudal fin, a lightly pigmented dorsum, and a pale belly. Detailed colour notes for this species are sparse in the available literature; the overall impression is of a clean, unornamented schooling fish. Sexual dimorphism, where noted in related species, typically involves females being deeper-bodied and more rounded when gravid.
Habitat
Rasbora labiosa is native to tropical Asia, with records from India, where it inhabits rivers and streams. Like many members of the genus on the Indian subcontinent, it occupies a range of lotic environments — from larger river channels to their tributary streams — typically associated with soft to moderately hard freshwater.
Data on precise microhabitat preferences for this species are limited in the available literature. By analogy with other Indian Rasbora species, it likely favours areas with moderate current, sand or gravel substrate, and marginal or submerged vegetation. Water parameters from care guides suggest it tolerates a pH range of approximately 6.8–7.8 and temperatures of 75–81 °F (75–80 °F), consistent with the warm-water rivers of the Indian plains and foothills.
Feeding
Rasbora labiosa is an omnivore in the typical rasbora mould, feeding opportunistically on small invertebrates, insect larvae, zooplankton, algae, and organic detritus in the wild. The fleshy lips suggested by its name may facilitate picking food items from surfaces or sifting through benthic material, though detailed dietary studies for this species are not available in the published literature.
In the aquarium it accepts standard foods without difficulty: quality flake and small pellet foods form a good base, supplemented with live and frozen items such as daphnia, brine shrimp, and bloodworm to maintain condition and encourage natural foraging behaviour.
Mating
Rasbora labiosa, like all members of the genus, is an egg-scattering, non-guarding spawner. No pair bond forms beyond the act of spawning itself. When fish are in condition, a driving male pursues a gravid female closely through vegetation or open water, pressing alongside her as eggs and milt are released simultaneously.
Spawning is typically triggered by favourable conditions — warm water, abundant food, and in natural habitats, the onset of the seasonal rains. In the aquarium, a gradual rise in temperature and the addition of fresh, slightly cooler water can simulate the cues that prompt breeding behaviour in related rasboras.
Breeding
As an egg-scatterer, Rasbora labiosa deposits adhesive or weakly adhesive eggs over fine-leaved plants, moss, or gravel and provides no parental care whatsoever. Adults will readily consume eggs given the opportunity, so breeders typically separate spawning fish from the eggs immediately after spawning.
A separate breeding tank with a layer of fine-leaved plants or a mesh over the bottom is the standard approach used for related species. After spawning, adults are removed and eggs are left to develop at 77–81 °F. Eggs hatch in two to three days at tropical temperatures; free-swimming fry are initially fed infusoria or rotifers, progressing to newly hatched brine shrimp as they grow. Specific published breeding accounts for this species are sparse, but the approach mirrors that used successfully for comparable Rasbora congeners.
In the aquarium
Rasbora labiosa is a shoaling species that must be kept in a group to display natural behaviour and remain confident; a minimum of six individuals is advisable, with larger numbers preferable. It suits a planted community aquarium with open mid-water swimming space, gentle to moderate current, and soft to moderately hard, slightly acidic to neutral water (pH 6.8–7.8, 75–81 °F / 75–80 °F).
At up to 3.5 in, it is somewhat larger than the more commonly traded dwarf rasboras, and tankmates should be chosen accordingly — robust, similarly sized community species are appropriate. It is not aggressive and is likely to be outcompeted by boisterous or nippy fish. This species is infrequently encountered in the trade and may require sourcing from specialist importers.
Conservation
Rasbora labiosa is assessed as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List, with the assessment dated September 2010. It is a moderately distributed species across India with no evidence of significant population decline at the time of assessment.
Like many freshwater fishes of the Indian subcontinent, it faces the background pressures of habitat degradation driven by agricultural runoff, river modification, and urban expansion across its range. Its LC status reflects a wide enough distribution that these pressures have not yet pushed it to a threatened threshold, though ongoing monitoring of South Asian freshwater biodiversity is important given the pace of land-use change in the region.
