Taxonomy & naming
Rasbora neilgherriensis was described by Francis Day in 1867 from the Neilgherry Hills — the anglicised name for the Nilgiri Hills of southern India — with type localities including Ootacamund Lake, the Pykara, Avelanche and Kaity streams. The species was subsequently synonymised with the widespread Rasbora daniconius, and for much of the twentieth century it was not treated as a valid taxon in its own right.
Recent morphological re-examination and DNA barcoding studies have re-established the Nilgiri Hills population as a distinct species and simultaneously referred it to the genus Devario, making the current valid combination Devario neilgherriensis (Day, 1867). The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) is the authority for this placement. The genus Devario — a group of elongate, laterally banded schooling danionins from South and Southeast Asia — is the appropriate home for this species rather than Rasbora, which now carries a more restricted sense. This page retains the original binomial as published by Day; the current valid name in the literature is Devario neilgherriensis.
The species epithet neilgherriensis means 'of the Neilgherry Hills', a Latinisation of the anglicised toponym for the Nilgiri Hills (Tamil Nadu/Kerala, southern India).
Morphology
Devario neilgherriensis is a moderately elongate, laterally compressed danionin reaching approximately 3.5–4 in standard length — a notably large member of its genus. The lateral line is complete, with 32–34 pored scales, and a mid-lateral dark stripe approximately 2½ scales wide runs along the flank anterior to the pelvic fin, a diagnostic character used in the taxonomic re-description.
The overall build and patterning are consistent with other Devario: a streamlined body suited to current, a subterminal to terminal mouth, and horizontal banding that blends into the dark and light tones of the fish's rocky hill-stream environment. Detailed colour descriptions in life are sparse in the published literature for wild adults.
Habitat
This species is restricted to cold, clear, well-oxygenated hill streams in the Nilgiri Hills of southern India, at elevations ranging from approximately 2329–6611 ft above sea level. The type localities — Ootacamund Lake, the Pykara, Avelanche and Kaity rivers — are all tributaries of the Bhavani River system, itself part of the Cauvery River basin draining through Kerala and Tamil Nadu.
The streams it occupies are fast-flowing with rocky substrates, characteristic of the upper Western Ghats. Water temperatures are cool — Seriously Fish records 61–75 °F — reflecting the high-altitude origin and the montane climate of the Nilgiri plateau. The species is a freshwater stream specialist with a very small, fragmented range; it does not occur in the lowland rivers below the escarpment.
Feeding
In the wild, Devario neilgherriensis is an insectivore and micropredator, taking insects and their aquatic larvae from the water column and surface, as is typical for hill-stream danionins. The cool, fast-flowing streams of the Nilgiri Hills are productive for drifting invertebrate prey.
In the aquarium the species accepts a varied diet including bloodworm, daphnia and brine shrimp alongside good-quality dried foods. Active surface and mid-water feeding behaviour is characteristic of the genus.
Mating
Like all members of the danionin subfamily, Devario neilgherriensis is an egg-scattering, non-guarding spawner. There is no nest, no bubble-nest, no mouthbrooding, and no parental care of any kind. Courtship consists of a driving male pursuing a gravid female through vegetation or over the substrate, the pair releasing eggs and milt together in brief lateral contact.
Spawning in hill-stream danionins is typically triggered by seasonal cues — rising water levels or temperature changes associated with monsoon rains — but specific field observations for this species are not documented in the available literature.
Breeding
Devario neilgherriensis scatters adhesive eggs over fine-leaved plants, moss or rocky substrate, after which adults give no parental care and will readily consume eggs if they remain accessible. Standard danionin breeding technique applies in captivity: a separate shallow tank with a mesh or fine-leaved plant mat to protect scattered eggs, a slight temperature rise and water change to prompt spawning, and removal of adults after eggs are laid.
Specific aquarium breeding accounts for this species are not well documented in the hobbyist literature, reflecting its rarity in the trade. Its cool-water requirements (61–75 °F) and active nature will need to be matched for consistent results.
In the aquarium
Devario neilgherriensis is an active, schooling species that requires groups of at least eight to ten individuals to exhibit natural behaviour and remain settled. It is a robust, fast-swimming fish that needs spacious, well-oxygenated aquaria with strong filtration and some current — conditions that reflect its hill-stream origins. Tankmates should be similarly active and robust.
The species has cool-water requirements (61–75 °F, pH 6.0–7.5) that set it apart from most tropical community fish; it is better suited to a cool-water or unheated hill-stream biotope alongside other high-altitude South Asian species. It is rarely encountered in the trade given its restricted range and Endangered status, and wild collection is inappropriate. Captive-bred specimens, if available, are strongly preferred.
Conservation
Rasbora neilgherriensis (Devario neilgherriensis) is assessed as Endangered (EN) on the IUCN Red List, reflecting its extreme endemism and the pressures on its restricted high-altitude range. The species is found only in a handful of tributaries of the Bhavani River system in the Nilgiri Hills, with an estimated extent of occurrence likely under 62 mi², making it acutely vulnerable to any change in those catchments.
The primary threats are habitat loss through deforestation, agricultural encroachment, water extraction for the heavily cultivated Nilgiri plateau (tea, coffee, horticulture), and water pollution. The Nilgiri Hills support a large human population and intensive land use that has significantly altered stream hydrology and water quality across much of the original range. The species' cool-water, high-altitude niche also makes it sensitive to warming trends associated with land clearance and climate change.
Given its Endangered status and restricted wild range, this species should not be collected from wild populations. Any specimens appearing in the hobby should be verified as captive-bred.
