Rasbora nodulosa is a small, recently described freshwater cyprinid endemic to a handful of coastal stream systems in northwestern Sumatra, Indonesia. Described by Lumbantobing in 2010 as one of four new members of the R. trifasciata species group, it is distinguished from its closest relatives by its unusual cephalic tubercles — smaller and more nodular than those of related forms, a feature reflected directly in its name. Confined to a narrow band of lowland drainages in the Tripa District and neighbouring rivers, it represents the kind of narrowly endemic Sumatran rasbora that is at once scientifically intriguing and inherently vulnerable.

Taxonomy & naming

Rasbora nodulosa was formally described by Lumbantobing in 2010 in the journal Copeia (volume 2010, issue 4), in a paper erecting four new species of the Rasbora trifasciata species group from northwestern Sumatra. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) records the valid name as Rasbora nodulosa Lumbantobing, 2010.

The species belongs to the R. trifasciata group — a clade of small, striped Sumatran rasboras characterised in part by the presence of cephalic tubercles (small bony projections on the head) expressed chiefly in breeding males. Within the group, R. nodulosa is distinguished by its Type D tubercle morphology: the tubercles are smaller and more nodular in form than those of sympatric relatives such as R. cf. sumatrana, found alongside it in the Seumayam River. No subspecies or recognised population variants have been described.

The genus Rasbora has undergone considerable revision since the 1990s. Kottelat and other authors carved out several daughter genera — Boraras, Trigonopoma, Brevibora, Trigonostigma and others — from the old catch-all Rasbora, but R. nodulosa remains within Rasbora sensu stricto under the current Catalog of Fishes treatment.

Morphology

Rasbora nodulosa is a small, slender cyprinid; FishBase records a maximum size of 2 in standard length (SL) for male or unsexed specimens, placing it at the smaller end of the genus. The body form is typical of the trifasciata group: moderately elongate and laterally compressed, with a small terminal or slightly upturned mouth.

The diagnostic feature of the species is its cephalic tubercles — small, nodular bony projections on the head, classified as Type D within the trifasciata group's tubercle typology. These structures are expressed most strongly in adult males and are used in species-level identification within the group. Coloration in life follows the general rasbora pattern: a horizontal dark midlateral stripe on a silvery or golden-flanked body, consistent with related members of the trifasciata complex, though precise details of fresh coloration are sparse in the primary literature for this recently described species.

Habitat

Rasbora nodulosa is known from freshwater coastal streams in northwestern Sumatra: the Seumayam River, the Tangan-tangan River, and two additional unnamed coastal drainages in the Tripa District. These are lowland drainages of the Sumatran western coastal plain — relatively small river systems draining forested or formerly forested terrain toward the Indian Ocean.

The broader trifasciata group, and small Sumatran rasboras generally, occupy slow-moving forest streams, peat-influenced watercourses and coastal drainage channels. The water chemistry typical of such habitats in this part of Sumatra is soft and mildly acidic: the closely related R. einthovenii from similar Sumatran coastal drainages is associated with water of around 5–12 dGH general hardness, pH 6.0–7.0 and temperatures of 75–81 °F (75–80 °F), with dense riparian vegetation, leaf litter accumulation and tannin staining. These parameters serve as the best available proxy for R. nodulosa's native conditions in the absence of specific published measurements for its home streams.

Feeding

No specific dietary studies have been published for Rasbora nodulosa. Like small cyprinids in the trifasciata group generally, it is inferred to be an omnivore and micropredator in the wild, subsisting on small aquatic invertebrates — insect larvae, microcrustaceans and worms — together with algae, organic detritus and plant material encountered in stream drift and among leaf litter.

In the aquarium, related Sumatran rasboras accept a wide range of small prepared foods: quality micro-pellets or fine flakes form a practical staple, supplemented with live and frozen items such as daphnia, cyclops, micro-worms and finely chopped bloodworm to maintain condition. Given its small adult size, appropriately scaled food particle size is important.

Mating

Rasbora nodulosa has not been bred in captivity in any documented accounts in the primary or hobbyist literature, and no direct spawning observations are on record. As a member of the genus Rasbora, it is a non-guarding egg-scatterer: spawning involves a driving male pursuing a gravid female through vegetation, with eggs and milt released simultaneously over plants, leaf litter or the substrate.

The cephalic tubercles of breeding males in the trifasciata group are thought to play a role in competition between males or in contact during the spawning embrace, though their exact function remains undescribed in detail. There is no pair bond, no nest construction, and no parental investment beyond the act of spawning itself — a pattern shared by all members of the genus.

Breeding

No captive breeding accounts for Rasbora nodulosa appear in the published or hobbyist literature. Based on the biology of the trifasciata group and Sumatran rasboras generally, breeding would be expected to follow the standard egg-scattering pattern: a conditioned pair or group releases adhesive or weakly adhesive eggs over fine-leaved plants or roots, with no parental care thereafter. Adults will eat eggs if not separated.

Conditioned pairs offered soft, acidic, warm water (pH 6.0–6.8, 77–81 °F) in a densely planted or moss-filled tank would represent a reasonable starting point for breeding attempts, following the template used successfully with other trifasciata-group rasboras. Fertilised eggs typically hatch in one to two days in warm water for related species, with free-swimming larvae taking infusoria and finely powdered foods in the first week.

In the aquarium

Rasbora nodulosa has a very limited presence in the aquarium hobby and is rarely encountered in trade. Its narrow endemic range in northwestern Sumatra means it is unlikely to appear in mainstream retail channels; wild-caught specimens, if available at all, would be collected from the specific Tripa District drainages in which the species is known.

For any keeper fortunate enough to obtain it, the species would be expected to do best in the conditions typical of Sumatran coastal-stream rasboras: a soft, slightly acidic, well-filtered aquarium with some tannin staining from dried leaves or peat, dense planting, and temperatures in the 75–81 °F range. A shoal of at least six to eight individuals would minimise stress and encourage natural behaviour. Given its likely rarity in trade, captive breeding efforts would be of real conservation value. Tankmates should be small, peaceful species with similar water-chemistry preferences.

Conservation

Rasbora nodulosa is assessed as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List, with the assessment dated January 2019. The Least Concern determination reflects the absence of evidence of major ongoing decline rather than a large or stable global population — the species has a genuinely small and restricted range, confined to a few coastal drainages in the Tripa District of northwestern Aceh Province, Sumatra.

The Tripa region is part of the Leuser Ecosystem, one of the last areas of intact lowland Sumatran forest but one that has experienced severe deforestation and peat-swamp drainage for oil palm expansion over the past two decades. The coastal lowland streams in which R. nodulosa occurs are directly exposed to these pressures: runoff from cleared land alters water chemistry, sedimentation smothers stream beds, and drainage of peat swamps reduces base flow. A species with a range confined to a handful of river systems in one of Indonesia's most deforested coastal zones occupies an inherently precarious position, and monitoring of population status would be warranted as pressures on the Tripa landscape continue.
