Taxonomy & naming
Rasbora rheophila was formally described by Maurice Kottelat in 2012, with the holotype IRSNB 874 (2.5 in SL) and paratypes (2.5 in SL) taken from Sungai Pangakatan, a tributary of Sungai Liwagu in Sabah, Malaysian Borneo. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) is the authority for valid names and records this species under Rasbora Bleeker, 1859.
The genus Rasbora has been substantially restructured over the past three decades. Kottelat and Witte (1999) and subsequent workers carved out Boraras, Trigonostigma, Trigonopoma, Brevibora, and other genera from what was once a catch-all Rasbora, while the celestial pearl danio — once sold as 'galaxy rasbora' — was moved into Danio. Rasbora rheophila was not part of those earlier revisions; it was described as new to science the same year many of those rearrangements had already settled, and the current valid combination remains Rasbora rheophila Kottelat, 2012 with no synonyms recorded.
Morphology
Rasbora rheophila is a moderately large rasbora, with holotype and paratype specimens measuring approximately 2–2.5 in SL, suggesting adults can approach 2.5 in. The body is slim and streamlined, with a rounded snout and the dorsal fin positioned further back along the body than in many rasboras — a body plan consistent with life in flowing water.
The coloration is relatively understated: an olive-tinged back shades to silvery-grey flanks, and a dark lateral stripe runs the full length of the body from head to the tail base. The belly is pale and silvery. This pattern is typical of the open-water, current-oriented rasboras of Bornean hill streams and provides effective countershading against the light refracted through clear, fast water.
Habitat
This species is known only from Sungai Pangakatan, a tributary of Sungai Liwagu in Sabah (northern Borneo), which it inhabits at elevation in a high-gradient mountain catchment. The habitat consists of steep, fast-moving streams with large, deep pools that are partially isolated from the main current, alongside sections of clear, swift flow over sand and rock substrates with leaf litter and submerged root tangles along the margins.
Unlike many Sundaland rasboras of peat-swamp or lowland-blackwater origin, R. rheophila requires moderate to strong water movement and is sensitive to water quality deterioration. The clear, cool, well-oxygenated character of a Bornean highland stream sets the baseline: this is not a fish of warm, acidic, tannin-stained lowland water, but of the cleaner, faster upland drainage above the coastal lowlands.
Feeding
No detailed dietary study of Rasbora rheophila in the wild has been published, and the species' brief original description does not address feeding habits. Based on the morphology of closely related Rasbora species of similar size and habitat, the diet most likely consists of drifting invertebrates — aquatic insect larvae, small crustaceans and terrestrial insects caught at or near the surface — supplemented with whatever organic material the current delivers.
In an aquarium setting comparable rheophilic rasboras and other stream-adapted cyprinids accept a wide range of prepared foods. Good quality small pellets and flake, supplemented with live and frozen items such as daphnia, bloodworm and brine shrimp, are expected to maintain this species in good condition, though dedicated husbandry data remain sparse.
Mating
No field or captive observations of courtship behaviour in Rasbora rheophila have been published. As a member of Rasbora, it is an egg-scattering, non-guarding spawner with no nest construction and no parental care — the universal pattern for this genus.
In the wild, spawning in small highland rasboras typically follows periods of increased water flow and is triggered by temperature and condition cues. A receptive male pursues a gravid female through vegetation and current, pressing alongside her as eggs and milt are scattered into the water and settle among plant matter, roots or the substrate. No pair bond is formed, and both fish are likely to consume eggs opportunistically after spawning.
Breeding
Rasbora rheophila has not been bred in captivity as of its description, and no published breeding reports exist. Its biology as a Rasbora places it firmly in the egg-scatterer category: adhesive eggs scattered over plants, moss, roots or coarse substrate with no parental care of any kind. Adults should be assumed to consume eggs readily.
Hobbyists attempting to breed this species would be expected to follow the approach used for similar rheophilic cyprinids: a well-planted or moss-filled tank with strong water movement and cool, clean, slightly soft to neutral water, conditioning adults separately on live and frozen foods, then introducing them and removing the adults after spawning. Fry would require fine live foods such as infusoria and newly hatched brine shrimp. Given its extreme rarity in the trade, captive breeding records, if they exist, have not reached the published literature.
In the aquarium
Rasbora rheophila is rarely if ever available in the aquarium trade, as it is described from a single Sabah tributary and appears never to have been established in commercial supply chains. Any specimens that do become available would require a tank designed around the species' rheophilic nature: a longer aquarium of at least 15 US gal with strong filtration producing genuine current, a substrate of sand and smooth rock with some leaf litter and root tangles as cover, and consistently clean water.
Water parameters should reflect the cool, clear highland stream habitat: temperature in the range of approximately 72–81 °F, pH leaning toward neutral to slightly acidic, and low to moderate hardness. Weekly water changes and high dissolved oxygen are non-negotiable for a fish adapted to the perpetual flush of a mountain stream. Its size (approaching 2.5 in) and likely active, open-water behaviour suggest it would do best in a species-specific setup or alongside other active, clean-water fishes rather than delicate slow-water community species.
Conservation
Rasbora rheophila is assessed as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List, with the evaluation published on 17 January 2019. The assessment acknowledges that this is a very recently described, geographically restricted species known from a single tributary — Sungai Pangakatan in Sabah — but found no evidence of population decline sufficient to trigger a threatened category at the time of assessment.
The narrow endemic range is nonetheless a genuine risk factor. Sabah's highland forests face ongoing pressure from commercial logging, plantation expansion and watershed modification, all of which degrade the clear, high-oxygen stream habitat that R. rheophila requires. A species endemic to one small tributary has essentially no buffer against local disturbance. The species has low fishing vulnerability and is not commercially exploited, but its restricted range means that any significant change to Sungai Pangakatan's water quality or flow regime could put the entire known population at risk. Ongoing monitoring and protection of its headwater catchment would be the most effective conservation measure.
