Acentrogobius pflaumii, the striped sandgoby, is a small true goby of the estuaries and sheltered bays of East Asia — Japan, China and Korea — whose pelvic fins are fused into the cup-shaped sucker disc that marks a real goby. Like the vast majority of its relatives in the family Oxudercidae, it lives where fresh water meets the sea: sandy and silty intertidal flats, harbour shallows and tidal rivers in brackish to marine conditions. Native to the temperate coasts of northeast Asia, it has spread as a ship-ballast-water invader into Australian ports and into the Mediterranean, where it forms established non-indigenous populations. It is a micro-predator of the benthos, a shrimp-burrow resident, and a brackish-water specialist with very little aquarium history.

Taxonomy & naming

Acentrogobius pflaumii was described by the Dutch ichthyologist Pieter Bleeker in 1853 from material collected at Nagasaki, Japan, where Bleeker's label noted the type locality as 'in the sea'. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) places it in the genus Acentrogobius, family Oxudercidae — the family that now encompasses most of the true gobies following molecular reclassifications from Gobiidae. Historical literature sometimes listed it under Gobius or under other synonymic combinations; the genus Acentrogobius groups small, slender, sand- and silt-dwelling gobies of the Indo-West Pacific.

This is a true goby: its pelvic fins are fused at the base into the characteristic cup-like sucker disc that separates the true gobies from the sleeper gobies and gudgeons (Eleotridae), whose pelvic fins remain separate. Gobies as a whole are overwhelmingly a marine group; freshwater and brackish-water species are the exception, and the striped sandgoby sits squarely in the brackish-marine end of the family's range.

The species epithet pflaumii is a patronym honouring the physician C. Pflaum, who provided Bleeker with specimens from Japan.

Morphology

The striped sandgoby is a moderately slender goby reaching up to 4.5 in in total length, though most adults encountered in estuarine surveys run 2.5–4 in. The body is pale, sandy or yellowish-buff, patterned with a series of darker lateral markings — stripes, blotches or rows of spots — that give rise to the common name 'striped sandgoby'. The head is broad and somewhat depressed, the eyes set high, and the mouth is positioned to feed from the substrate.

The fused pelvic fins form a distinct sucker disc on the underside, used to anchor the fish on unstable sandy or silty substrate against tidal currents — a character absent from the sleeper gobies and gudgeons. The first dorsal fin is typically short-rayed, the second dorsal and anal fins elongated. Detailed fin-ray counts and scale formulae distinguish this species from related Acentrogobius species; examination of fresh specimens is needed to confirm identity in areas of overlap.

In the Swan-Canning Estuary (Perth, Australia), where this species has become established as a non-indigenous population, males reach 4 in and females 3.5 in; first-year fish attain around 2.5 in. Lifespan is approximately four years, with 0+ and 1+ age classes dominating sampled populations.

Habitat

This species occupies sandy and silty intertidal and subtidal areas in sheltered bays, harbours and estuaries, from the intertidal zone down to approximately 49 ft depth. It is characteristically associated with the burrows of alpheid (pistol or snapping) shrimps, whose excavations provide shelter and possibly food subsidies — a commensal habit shared with other gobies in the Acentrogobius and related genera.

Water conditions in its native range are temperate to warm-temperate brackish: the coast of Japan, China and Korea experiences a marked seasonal temperature range, and the species tolerates a broad thermal window. Aquarium literature records a temperature range of 68–82 °F, consistent with a temperate species that can warm considerably in shallow summer estuaries. Salinity is typically measurably saline — true estuarine to marine conditions rather than fresh water.

The species has established non-indigenous populations in Port Phillip Bay and Sydney Harbour and Botany Bay in southeastern Australia, the Swan-Canning Estuary in Western Australia, and in New Zealand and the Mediterranean — all arriving via the ship ballast-water pathway. Its success as an invader reflects both its tolerance of a wide salinity and temperature range and its association with disturbed, harbour and port environments.

Feeding

Acentrogobius pflaumii is a benthic micro-predator, picking small invertebrates from and just above the sandy or muddy substrate. Known diet items include amphipods, copepods, echinoderm larvae, small snails, polychaete worms and a range of zoobenthos and zooplankton — a varied diet of small, motile invertebrates.

Like most small gobies, this species hunts by sight close to the substrate and is poorly suited to taking suspended dry food. In the aquarium it would require small live and frozen invertebrate foods — bloodworm, brine shrimp, copepods, amphipods and similar offerings — to feed well. Its reliance on live and frozen foods and its weak aquarium history mean it is not a beginner fish. A species that feeds predominantly on the diverse invertebrate life of an active estuary cannot realistically be sustained long-term on dried flake alone.

Mating

Details of courtship in the striped sandgoby are not extensively documented in the aquarium literature, but the species is known to have a protracted spawning season in its introduced Australian populations, with peak spawning occurring periodically through warm months as conditions allow. In the Swan-Canning Estuary, spawning timing resembles that of native Korean populations but is more extended under the warmer and more equable Australian conditions.

Like other true gobies of this type, males are presumed to establish and defend a spawning site — likely within or adjacent to a shrimp burrow or a sheltered cavity — and court receptive females there. This would be consistent with the typical small-goby pattern of male territory-holding and active courtship display.

Breeding

The striped sandgoby is a resident brackish-water cave or substrate spawner. Based on the biology of close relatives in the genus Acentrogobius and on related estuarine gobies, the female lays adhesive eggs within a sheltered site — a burrow, crevice or beneath an object — and the male guards and fans the clutch until hatching. The eggs are adhesive and relatively large for a small goby. This is not egg-scattering and not mouthbrooding.

The species has no established captive-breeding record. Although the whole reproductive cycle occurs in brackish water (the larvae do not appear to require a marine developmental phase in the manner of amphidromous gobies), its exacting water-chemistry requirements, specialist diet, and very limited aquarium history mean that deliberate captive breeding has not been documented. The Swan-Canning population data indicate eggs are deposited periodically during the spawning season rather than in a single mass event.

In the aquarium

The striped sandgoby has virtually no established aquarium profile: no care guides appear in the mainstream hobby literature, no captive-bred stock is commercially available, and there is no tradition of keeping this species in the ornamental trade. Any fish entering the hobby would be wild-collected from native East Asian or perhaps Australian waters.

If kept, it would require a brackish-water aquarium — not plain fresh water — with a salinity of at least 1.004–1.010 specific gravity reflecting its estuarine origins. A sandy or silty substrate, retreats mimicking shrimp burrows or rock crevices, and a temperature of 68–82 °F would be appropriate. It is not a tropical community fish; its native range is temperate, and it should not be housed with warm-water species at 82 °F+ continuously. The tank must be covered: gobies are accomplished jumpers.

Diet presents the main husbandry challenge: this is a micro-predator that needs small live and frozen foods — bloodworm, brine shrimp, copepods, amphipods — and will likely ignore dry food. Given the absence of any captive care record, this species is best regarded as a specialist subject rather than an aquarium recommendation. It is of interest to researchers and serious estuarine-goby keepers only.

Conservation

Acentrogobius pflaumii has not been assessed on the IUCN Red List and carries no formal conservation category; we record it as Not Evaluated. The species is described as a common fish in the coastal and estuarine waters of Japan, China and Korea, suggesting no present cause for concern in its native range.

Ironically, the main conservation story here runs in the opposite direction: this is a species of concern as an invader rather than as a species under threat. Its establishment via ballast water in Port Phillip Bay, Sydney Harbour, Botany Bay, the Swan-Canning Estuary and elsewhere in southern Australia represents a documented biological invasion, with potential competition with native estuarine gobies and other small benthic species. Studies in the Swan-Canning Estuary have examined its population dynamics and life history in the introduced range. Ship ballast-water exchange regulations have been tightened globally to reduce such introductions, but established populations are effectively permanent. There is no trade in this species that might affect wild populations.
